Do something nobody has done before
JadeOfMaar replied to quasarrgames's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I think I have another thing or two that nobody has surely done before. Getting to orbit Skylon style (going hypersonic) but without Oxidizer and without the heat cheat. OPT engines get my ships started, but it's engines from another mod that serve as the flywheel and highest gears. First picture is a few weeks ago in KSP 1.1.3, the second is yesterday in KSP 1.2. -
Let me hijack your stream. I present to you my hypersonic... The NOX Crown SSTO r4 for KSP 1.2 and the NOX Crown r3 for KSP 1.1.3.
-
Looks like I did go to space today, and good thing I did. Siecie and Bob went on a serious test flight. They took a true measurement of the stamina of the reincarnate NOX Crown SSTO and tagged the first moon Iota: a 2-day transit from Gael, then a capture burn and soon after, an exit burn to descend back to atmosphere. They should have stayed a bit and buzzed Jeb who's in low orbit there. Bob has confirmed that the plane is somewhat unfit now even for Minmus landings (Iota has Minmus gravity). Siecie points the plane at Ceti which has Mun's gravity and basically shakes her head. The consensus is mutual between her and Bob "...Not happening." Here they are after the initial 4-day return and the first aerobrake pass to cut their orbital period by half. From this view they get interesting new images of their home planet and record these to the ship's log. After about 3 more reentries the pair have to face the inevitable dark side landing. Good thing Fort NOX kept the memo and installed chutes. The CoM remained a huge problem after the catastrophic engine failure was remedied. They land on a tiny island barely larger than a stadium (I'm not sure...I didn't mind it too much since it was so dark but it was shocking to zoom out just a bit and see water all around), off the west coast of the mainland that KSC is on and were promptly recovered by noon the next day. With this experience the spaceplane is revised again from being a science vessel and returned to its original purpose and then some-- a crew shuttle now with cargo space and without the CoM issue. Spoiler: They forget to deploy the wheels and break a few things.

Do something nobody has done before

Well it was a rush build when the idea came to me to associate its host planet with the pirate/raider theme and create its flag. Now that there's no rush I can build a mightier, flashier thing and especially attach your screens to it. I've had a fair amount of prior experience playing with Wild Blue's TV screen parts and building big stations. -
I don't think I'll be going to space today, but I checked up on a pilot who's observing Catullus from up close...very close, with High Res SVE installed instead of the usual Medium Res. I saw nothing new and impressive (maybe, again, I should have deleted the MM cache). However, deciding to rebuild another particular craft and test it out a trip to Gael's North Pole happened, partially because dealing with deadly pine trees at the end is not part of the plan. Siecie Kerman is the first to witness snow. Unfortunately she can't come out because the hatch is under the cockpit and there are no ladders. Mark Thrimm has just releasd, or is working on, a SpaceX ITS mod. It has EXACTLY what you're looking for. xD!

This is really, really nice. Hoping to get to explore all this wonderful stuff at the full release. I'm most curious about the windmill parts. I wonder if they'll respond dynamically to atmosphere (and especially, be useless in vacuum). I'm sure they'll be RTG-like and I'm hoping they have some kind of parabolic efficiency curve based on atmo pressure. They should be weak in thin atmospheres like Duna, just fine in Laythe or Kerbin-like atmosphere, and somewhere in between or weak again in places like Eve as they ought to have very strong brakes to keep from being spooled up to self-destruction. I just watched an episode of your big project and was blown away. Wow!
-
@Ohm Machre The part about New Horizons is the depressing part... It would be nice to see the game version bumped up on the really popular ones, maybe especially with fun little things added to them, or fixes like for Titanus and Ete? But I won't be installing them myself. I'm helping build GPP so there lies all the extra planets I'll ever need.

@Whovian41110 The first two are transparent unlike in this preview image.

You want the warp around the TARDIS too??? Install and enjoy!

I made a primary immobile thing with OPT Spaceplane Parts. Specifically, a station... a pirate station...with a hand-made pirate flag. -
Nah. He won't mind, for long. Patience is very high with this one.
-
@max_creative Lol. Happy to inspire and I've been eager to see screenshots with them on your ships. Just take the Creativity Aerospace folder inside the zip and put it in GameData. Or merge GameData folders. Yeah, Jade J Kerman is okay at piloting, but no, not big ones; nothing that requires a lot of attention or a lot of technique. He's really a scientist. Most of his capacity is in producing the alien! eccentric designs that the engineers will work from, and getting hands dirty with chemistry and possible new or existing future propulsion methods.

@LaytheDragon The first pic: Duna and Ike? And I want Minmus fog.

Oh, not this again. Seems to happen when I'm moving at a certain minimum velocity. Physics lag with new side effects? On the upside... Augustus. Awwwwwwe-freaking-gustus. My plane is alive!- 1,030 replies

The NOX Crown rev.4, first release-ready craft made in v1.9 parts. It still contains and requires engines from another mod to hold its title as a speed king but there are less of them (only 2 versus 8 total) and more OPT all around. Now featuring a deployment bay and science lab it's good for more than just delivering crew to Minmus and back...However, I'm clearly not on Kerbin so I can't say it still goes as far as rev.3 can go. If OPT had a true scramjet engine (rather than or among all these hybrid ones) I could consider making this a purely OPT-filled vessel. Without those engines, and more use of the NERVs, it can make 2100m/s with apoapsis of over 100km before the air engines die. As NOX means No Oxidizer there is no place for a J-81 or any other über LFO engine. The previous and still winning model. Not retiring anytime soon.

Well here's a hot one for the R&D archives... Since the Procedural Co's seem to still have no product in KSP 1.2, the handimen at Fort NOX had to substitute the lean midsection of their flagship craft, the NOX Crown with OPT pieces. There is probably a lot more dry mass now than before but now there are more OPT pieces to play with and the craft has evolved into revision 4, a flying lab and probe/rover-dropper. Physics™!!! Version 1.2 So it seemed a certain pair of rear engines were within exhaust force/damage range from the frontal engines and were getting repeatedly beaten until they simply gave up under increasing pressure. Quite sadly the CoM is behind the remaining engines before/after that blast, making steering a delicate affair now, but in this position the plane is quite dead. Aerodynamics completely fail and the remaining engines can't compensate even with their power. This gives KSC even more reason to equip all planes now with chutes. Later that day (discounting my revert to SPH) the design flaw is reasonably addressed and the NOX Crown proves itself still worthy of its name reaching 39km altitude at kingly speeds of 2700+. Next dev tests: actually landing, and aerobraking on return.

[1.2] Galileo's Planet Pack (development thread) [v0.9]
JadeOfMaar replied to Galileo's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Trying out a rebuild of [the] ultimate hypersonic, the NOX Crown. Hello again, volcano-- oh yea. I gotta do some evaluation at Augustus. He's chanting "Come at me!" with his Duna gravity and Kerbin-rated atmosphere. This plane, though, is promising that it can afford the plane change for Iota, land there and return but I doubt it can make Ceti and back. There was an epic failure in the testing with this craft but not posting that here. xD- 1,030 replies

[1.2] Galileo's Planet Pack (development thread) [v0.9]
JadeOfMaar replied to Galileo's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
I got screenshots of Otho's moons and prepped their dossiers. Didn't put too much heart into them as the template has to change a bit for all. But all 26 now exist inside PSDs... Lol Eta's trying to escape from Thalia. I don't blame the tiny one. Who wouldn't want to get away from that red planet? @OhioBob you're as much a villain as Galileo.- 1,030 replies

@degenerate Yes, dihedral wings (if that long-bus has them) are not my friend. I guess they're also not yours. I've done very little with the pylons/wing roots myself. I tend not to build big enough or other such things to need them and I've cleanly avoided using Tweakscale on OPT parts...for no specific reason but it turned out to be a very good idea at one point.
