Jet engines on Eve (and Jool)
Human Person replied to Human Person's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Will do the maths on this as soon as i get home. Because of its low density, it takes a lot of energy to compress hydrogen gas compared to its chemical energy. Assuming Eves Oceans are liquified atmosphere, it can't be hydrogen. I'll also reserch possible composites for this case. No, I would have to make too many assumptions for that, it would be rediculus. Instead, let's assume it's not hydrogen, let's assume it's mostly ... Methanol? Maybe this is worth a seperate thread. flying on Jool is pointless, that's why it's in brackets but Eve rules!- 25 replies

Jet engines on Eve (and Jool)

"Well, it simply shuts the Air Intake and injects Oxigen into the afterburner, easy as that ... ehremmm i mean it's highly complex an takes the rawest materials as well as super expensive production techniques to create this remarkable piece of engineering!" -C7 Aerospace Division- you're right though- 25 replies

@The_Rocketeer @Tex_NL The remaining question is: Does Eves or Jools atmosphere contain burnable fuel?- 25 replies

Jet engines on Eve (and Jool)

Since it already has oxidizer-plumbing, the RAPIER-engine would be predestinated for this task.- 25 replies

Jet engines on Eve (and Jool)
Human Person replied to Human Person's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
A lot of EC is still an understatement, the amount needed would be ginormous, not realizable. However there have been concepts of nuclear jet engines working as thermojets. Good idea, but you mentioned the disadvantages of propellers yourself. Also, you'll find other threads about this topic, balloons as well. I'm playing with that mod but it's not what is meant. This is an suggestion for the stock-game and it doesn't involve a completely new fuel system.- 25 replies

I know the exact composition of Eve's atmosphere or its oceans is a mystery, but I like to think of it as some sort of organic chemistry, something that would burn If added Oxidizer. How about jet engines would work there, but in reverse: Burning oxidizer in a fuel-rich environment instead of fuel in an oxidizer-rich environment. I now this would change gameplay drastically. I'm curious about your opinions.

New planet
Human Person replied to The Thyroid Man's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I'd like a new small planet, even closer to the Sun than Moho, with an atmosphere. It should be so hot that you need active cooling for probes or capsules to land on it and you cannot go on EVA there. Vulcanism would be a fun thing to research there. -
Hi folks! I just realized i rushed into discussions and challenges without introducing myself properly. - I'm 23 or 24 years old (have to ask my parents on that) - I live in Saarbrücken, Germany wich is close to to France and not far from Luxembourg. - I speak German, English, a bit of French and I understand Luxembourgish. - I'm studying since 2012. I started studying renewable energies and switchen to physics and finally to physics and chemistry to become a teacher. I'm planning on doing school projects with KSP in the future. - I've been playing KSP since version 1.1.3 (or thereabouts) for about 600 hours now and joined the Forums to participate in challenges and maybe write a few tutorials. - The reason I bought KSP in the first place is Scott Manly. Nice to be here.

Things that NASA never said at a press conference.

"How do you now if a statement is random or not? Maybe it makes coincidentally sense?" said the duck before taking a bite of its coconut sandwich and splitting the rest in 3 pieces shaped like texas, italy and a small child.

What seemingly basic thing have you never done in KSP
Human Person replied to Whisky Tango Foxtrot's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I never build a plane that would fly well. Then i tried out stock planes and kept crashing them as well. I'm done with aeronautics. -
Yes, I'm german. It's confusing: In german, we combine nouns (we don't just connect them, we combine them completely to form a new word, I feel like I have to let the people know If these nouns are meant to be combined). we also write every noun with a capital letter.

Redo the Voyager-Program! Step 1: Build the probe This might just be a challenge itself, because the probe is asymmetric. Aesthetics count! You may use Mods like IR to have hinges to deploy the booms (and antennas). If you don't want to do that (like i do), try to assemble the booms in space. However, it has to be a single launch. Mods that include cameras and more science-eqipment are welcome. Make sure the probe is only propelled by Monopropellant. You may use one or more O-10-Engines. For fun-reasons, you'll get extra points for using a single O-10. if your thrust-Vector is different from the orientation of your main probe-core, make sure you have another probe-core or a docking port aligned with the thrust-vector. - Your probe is asymmetric yet balanced around its main thrust-vector and looks like the Voyager-Spacecraft (I leave the look up to you, not going to judge your artistic work here) +20 points - your probe uses a single O-10 Engine for propulsion +5 points - Your spacecraft carries not more than 1/10th of its mass in Propellant. +50 points - Your probe uses LF-OX -20 points - Your probe uses Ion- or nuclear-engines minus all of your points Step 2: Build the Launch-Vehicle Easy as pie: The launch-Vehicle does nothing more than to send the payload on an transfer-trajectory to a large Planet (Kerbin, Eve, Jool or Jupiter if you'r doing this in RSS (RSS players get an extra leaderboard for awesomeness). - Your transfer-stage detaches from your probe before leaving Kerbins SOI +20 points Step 3: Gravity-assist yourself out of the Solar-System How exactly you do this is up to you, for your personal mission Profile, find a balance between: - Fly by as many celestial bodies as possible. +5 points for distant flybys, +10 points for close flybys (situation "in space near ..."). Max. 10 points per celestial body. - be on your escape-trajectory in a reasonable amount of time. To make this comparable, take the total mission time as soon as you leave the SOI oft the body that gives you the "last Kick" and sends you on an escape-trajectory. +10 points for every year less than 20, -10 points for ever year more than 20. - perform two big gravity-assists in a row (i.e. Eve-Jool) without performing a complete sun-Orbit. It's OK to have flybys in between: +50 points

I called one of my Scansats "Scanny Mc ScanScan". All the other Scansats are named Todd, like the Scansats in Scott Manleys Galileo Conquest. One of my first probes, wich was doomed to run out of electricity and to stay in LKO forever was renamed "Potato". Suggestions for manned Craft: - Deathtrap - Kraken Feeding Can - Nautilus (because Why not?)

Probe Mania
Human Person replied to rockets-don't-make-toast's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
This challenge is rather pointless but i have ideas in my head about exlosive-mass-deployment (maybe the kraken helps out) and a big cloud of probes slowly spreading to a ring around kerbin. Then do the same thing in a retro-orbit at the same Altitude and see what happens. ther's a big potential for fun here. -
Thanks! I wanted to keep it low-tec except for the LV-Ns. I'm gonna redo this with a lighter launch-vehicle and two landers.

Useable KSC Two?
Human Person replied to Spacetraindriver's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
It would be nice to have a little station (just a Hangar) at th edge of the north pole, because the north pole is the closest you can get to a salt-lake on Kerbin to do landspeed records. It sure is fun to fly my bloodhound there with a cargo-plane but i have to do this over and over again and it's getting tedious. -
What am I studdying?

I've been playing KSP for 500h now and never been to Moho ever. If I made it a little bit lighter, It wouldn't even have passed the 140t mark (had about 3000m/s delta v left at the end so i could have made this a lot smaller) Nuclear booster seperation during Moho-insertion-burn after ballistic transfer. I actually launched in quite an inclined orbit to match moho's inclination better. The single-stage Lander weights just about 700kg The lander was'nt over-engineered. it made the rendevous with the spacecraft wit only 60m/s to spare. 42 km Apoapis after the skip-reentry at 5km/s, periapsis 33 km. Max decceleration: 6.2g Mission parameters: +10 points: Reach Moho SOI with a manned craft +10 +40 points: Land your craft of the surface of Moho +40 +10 points: For each landed Kerbal (capped at 30 points) +10 +40 points: Return (i.e. land or spash down. If a few parts rip of, it's fine. But not just crashing) at least a part of your vessel to the surface of Kerbin +40 +10 points: For each Kerbal returned to Kerbin from the surface of Moho (capped at 30 points) +10 Science: +10 points: Transmit some kind of science from the Moho SOI (not cummulative) whoops, i returned everything +10 points: Transmit some kind of science from the Surface of Moho (not cummulative) nope +10 points: Return some kind of science from the Moho SOI to Kerbin and retrieve it. (not cummulative) +10 +10 points: Return some kind of science from the Moho surface to Kerbin and retrieve it (not cummulative) +10 +20 points: Return a surface sample from Moho and retrieve it. +20 +30 points: Collect science from two different biomes (EVA reports from just above ... not sure if that counts) +20 points: Explore the Mohole (use your own discretion on what accounts for "explore") did'nt do that Misc: +5 points: Plant a Flag at Moho +5 +10 points: Leave behind a science station (need probe core, energy, sciency thing and antenna). no My Score: 155

Totally get you. My current solution is going back to Stock (except for Kerbal Engineer and Scansat. Mods I have been installing, uninstalling, installing, ... al the time are e.g.. KW Rocketry, Unmanned before Manned and KIS, KAS so mainly mods that include a lot of parts. Maybe thats the flaw.

The Ultimate Jool 5 Challenge - 1.0 to 1.3
Human Person replied to sdj64's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Isn't a Miner a refueller as well? I'm currently working on the challenge. I'm restricting myself to the Launchpad Mark 2. My plan involves a Vall-Miner Which has a refuelling-Ship attached to the top. They land , mine and get back to Vall-Orbit while docked together. There the refuelling-ship detaches from the Miner below to deliver the Fuel anywhere in the Jool System and return to the miner again. Also, I'm not using any nuclear power.
