PLTR: I usually call them Panzerfausts because the payload is encased in a huge fairing that makes the rocket look sorta like the eponymous German recoilless grenade launcher.
-
I find the 5m parts quite useful. My superheavy rocket has a 4 x 3.75 m asparagus booster stages, a 3.75 m central asparagus second stage and a 5m third stage with nukes. It goes to orbit with half of its central 3.75 m stage still usable, leaving me with a bajillion of delta-V. It is useful to carry big payloads to Duna (or most other planets in the system) without the cheaty Orion mod, or to deliver whole stations and fuel depots to LKO and high Minmus orbits (in the latter case, the 5m section is not a stage but a fuel tank for refueling ships at the station). I've yet to design a purely 5m rocket, but I've already made a first stage engine cluster for it, with 4 mastodons in the corners and 9 vectors in the center (I call it the Brontosaurus engine). i tested this cluster with a Saturn V lookalike, it pulls 2-3 gees at start. Thinking big, in fact, is an acquired skill. There was a time when Rockomax was the biggest size I was comfortable with, and 3.75 m Kerbodyne seemed unusably gigantic to me.

Best place to put a space station?
ave369 replied to Gibster's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Minmus, Minmus, Minmus! Pros: * Shallow gravity well means that orbital maneuvers are cheap and easy. Easy rendezvous, easy docking, extremely low dV cost. * Shallow gravity well means easy trips to the surface and back. This means easy science grinding by delivering samples from each Minmus biome to the station, this means easy fuel production. Cons: * Slightly harder to get to than LKO. * Slightly less efficient interplanetary travel. You can easily exit Minmus orbit to interplanetary space, but you lose the benefit of the Oberth effect. However, this drawback is only significant for those who make micro-optimized mosquito craft that travel to Eeloo on Ants. -
Is it possible to make a command chair like part that can release a glider parachute, the same one kerbals have in their suits? This chair could be a base for a small paraglider type build with Junos...

[1.0.4] Instell Incorporated Experimental Technologies
ave369 replied to 8bitsblu's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
May I take over this mod, given that Benjamin Kerman abandoned it due to some licensing related fit of anger? -
Why no love for the humble Thud? It may not be the most efficient engine, but it's the first radially mounted engine to be unlocked, and you can make all sorts of crazy stuff with it. Such as a small shuttle.

I've recently played the new add-on. Some of the things I like: for example, the Soviet spherical pods. These pods have amazing survivability: they can reenter at 3000+ km/s and land perfectly fine. However, some parts were a huge disappointment, such as the Bear engine: this engine has almost exactly the same stats as the Reliant, but it needs more tech than the Reliant. I see no reason why use it at all, save for historical reenactment: the Reliant can do everything this engine can do, and can't do the same thing Reliant can't do (namely, thrust vectoring). Size 1.5 is also made of win. This is the size KSP sorely needed: the right size for Mun and Minmus missions, when standard small size just won't cut it and Rockomax is overkill.

I never make them that big. My typical "disposable fuel depot" is a single orange fuel tank equipped with a probe core, Vernors and a docking port. Such a depot can be tossed to the orbit of any planet to make missions there easier. When the fuel is over, I just erase the craft, hence disposable.

Most Kerbal thing you have ever heard of in real life
ave369 replied to Rocket Farmer's topic in The Lounge
The 1970s U.S. Navy Space Cruiser project is pretty kerbal. Non-pressurized cockpit with the pilot's noggin in a space helmet showing outside. Launched on an ICBM. Mk. 1 Eyeball navigation. The craft greatly resembles certain micro-optimized craft made by Turbo Pumped (youtube). -
Research alchemy. Research homeopathy. Research astrology. Forget about chemistry, medicine and astronomy. Why is this called "research" if it leads to regress and a new Middle Age?

High altitude means thin air. Thin air means low lifting force. Therefore, you just hit the ceiling for your plane design. The ceiling can be raised by either increasing speed or increasing wings, or both. It also depends on what engines you use, some engines are low speed and some are high speed. Don't hope to go hypersonic on a Wheesley, you need at least a Panther wet mode, or, better still, a Whiplash. If you use Whiplashes and still do not have enough speed, try adding more.

Depends on whether your spaceplane has good pitch authority and enough wingage to quickly change course when you change pitch and not stall quickly. If yes, pick an island, any island. They all are frustrating to land but doable if your spaceplane meets the requirements. If not, poles all the way.

Additionally, today I've found that the song Don't Stop me Now by Queen is a pretty fine soundtrack for aerobraking...

Does it work in 1.3.1?

KSP 2 Would Have Microtransactions
ave369 replied to llanthas's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Nothing I said in that last line YOU THINK is correct. Don't deal in absolutes. If you are willing to suffer microtransactions, by all means do so. But don't blame those who aren't. Piracy is like violence. Everyone agrees that violence in general is bad. If you attack passers-by in the street, you will be jailed. But if you beat up a mugger who tries to mug you, you are executing your right of self-defence. However, according to your logic, "two wrongs do not make a right", you are not supposed too fight muggery with violence, but rather dance a pretty dance for the mugger in hopes he'll leve you alone. Thanks, but I prefer self-defense. It isn't wrong. -
KSP 2 Would Have Microtransactions
ave369 replied to llanthas's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Microtransactions in a single player game are impossible. People will just pirate the paid content and redistribute it via torrents. Using piracy to steal whole games can be called reproachable, but using piracy to combat microtransactions is a completely justified form of cyber guerrilla warfare. Human beings have a right to rise up against tyranny, and microtransactions are a form of tyranny. -
Why I prefer using LKO is because LKO pretty much sucks as the location of useful infrastructure. Rendezvous maneuvers are costly and time-consuming unless you precisely launch into a specific orbit, and there is little reason to put comm satellites there because LKO is readily serviced by ground-based communications. Many shuttles and SSTOs I can see on KerbalX are meant to launch to LKO, with very little fuel remaining; this is more or less a dead-end unless you are a sniper and aim for the orbit of a fuel depot. Therefore, I prefer all my craft to be Minmus-capable and put all my infrastructure around Minmus, and LKO is reserved for parking derelicts.

The pulse det was supposed to be bigger. In 1.0.x versions it was a normal Size 1. In 1.1.x a bug caused by version change made the pulse det itty-bitty.
-
I am a fan of this mod. I always use it. My favourite design is Whiplash + Houdini + Nuke, the SSTO uses liquid fuel only, no oxidizer. Both this and the pre-update (non-Continued) version of the mod work normally in my 1.3.1 with the latest Firespitter, but the pulse-det engine is still itty-bitty. Could you please fix the pulse-det size bug?

Can I do a dirty hack and replace the IVA for the inline cockpit with the IVA for the normal cockpit?

I, too, have an issue of no RPM monitors in the MK2 inline cockpit. The version is 1.3.1 and I have no mods that modify the MK2 inline cockpit.

Also, a space opera mod should definitely have new parts such as a tractor beam part.
