I once had an argument with somebody who was convinced that chemical firearms would be entirely replaced with railguns within 100 years. It was a horrible experience. I had a thought the other day about laser weaponry: Because lasers are practically unaffected by planetary gravity, laser artillery would be unable to arc shots over hills and other terrain. So a laser cannon is near-useless as a ground weapon.
