SPOILER-FREE: Data-mining yields good news
Chilkoot replied to VlonaldKerman's topic in KSP2 Discussion
I take issue with conjecture being presented as fact, as we all should. There's a difference between stating, "I suspect development restarted again from scratch in 2020..." and saying, "Development did restart from scratch in 2020." The first is a possibly supported standpoint given no direct facts. The second is borderline misinformation and should be called out. -

But no evidence. Apocrypha/heresay. -
SPOILER-FREE: Data-mining yields good news

We have no evidence this is true - only conjecture. -
Nate posted earlier today saying target date for the first patch is next Thurs (March 16), barring unforeseen issues.

Colonies strongly imply life support is coming... right?
Chilkoot replied to cephalo's topic in KSP2 Discussion
Nate didn't give specifics, but he alluded to the spirit of what you're suggesting here, i.e. life support matters, but colonies won't require *babysitting/micromanagement. The word "snacks" has come up so many times in Dev interviews it would be surprising if they aren't canon by the time 1.0 lands. -
Every life is a certain percent "worry" - we need to worry and be upset about things for emotional balance. If we have nothing real to worry about (food, safety, shelter, health), we find stuff to worry about (social status, what to wear, the neighbor's yard, etc.). If people come in here feeling legitimately upset about Kerbal, we should be happy for them, as it means things are probably pretty darn OK in their lives outside the game. I just try to be happy for them and ignore the moaning

Developer Insights #18 - Graphics of Early Access KSP2

Fresh start today. Setting up a polar comms relay to manage my upcoming swarm of probes... Still fine-tuning the north polar elliptical. Thanks Obama Maneuver Nodes. A lonely comms satellite doing it's job out in the void. I need to remember to radio it around Christmas.

Count me in! I'll take it extra dry with a twist and - of course - shaken

That's not always bad. For example, the altimeter was somewhat 'heads-up' and very prominent in KSP 1, and it's position and visibility are both poor in comparison in KSP 2. Information "clumping" has its own set of problems, and there's a good argument that the new flight UI suffers from many of them.

Chilkoot replied to cephalo's topic in KSP2 Discussion
Life support was confirmed - for colonies at least - very early on. Whether it will be in the final release and what form it will take is still unknown. Still, smart money currently says, "yes." -
Wait - is asparagus not really necessary in KSP 1 anymore? I thought it was still quite a bit more efficient if you were all liquid-fuel powered boosters.

I wish this was stickied in giant, flashing letters at the top of the forums. The ease with which people will jump to conclusions is mind-boggling.

I tend to use a combination of this porkchop plotter: https://alexmoon.github.io/ksp/ and this visual guide https://ksp.olex.biz/ With the current maneuver node wonkiness, you'll be hard pressed to nail it exactly, so bring some extra dV for in-course corrections. Oh - IMPORTANT - do your major timewarps to line up the planets before you launch, as KSP 2 limits your warp pretty badly while in ~100km orbit above Kerbin.

Heh - just poking some fun that you're young It's a good thing to be! The Bard's Tale was a monumental break-through in the RPG genre in the 80's. As a trilogy, it set the standard of RPG computer gaming for nearly a decade. Like KSP today, there were others in the genre at the time, but it was the "state of the art" at the time, forging the way with depth of story, game mechanics, graphics and music.

About patience and ambition (thank you Paul Furio!)
Chilkoot replied to Vl3d's topic in KSP2 Discussion
I always kind of scratched my head why the original team chose to keep gravity at ~9.8m/s2, but then scaled down the size of everything. Was it a time warp thing at that point in development? Was it just too ... tedious to sit through an orbital burn up to 8km/s, or maybe the jaunt to Jool was just too much to sit through? On another topic - I could be wrong here, but I seem to recall that time dilation at relativistic speeds *will* be accounted for in KSP 2. That was a statement a loooong time ago from Star Theory (remember them?), so it may have been dropped along the way.- 13 replies

It's painful to think about, but this is reality in the world of software development. Two venerated IP's with a boatload of goodwill behind them were essentially killed by awful initial releases: Duke Nukem (Forever) and The Bard's Tale (IV): Both had a rocky development/funding path with a large publisher picking them up mid-cycle Both released prematurely for financial reasons and were absolutely panned in reviews Both received amazing updates, earning 80+ scores in PC Gamer (80 and 84 respectively) Both failed to recover from the poor early reviews, essentially killing the franchises. KSP is no more immune to this fate than any other franchise - we can only hope the most critical issues (performance and game-breaker bugs) are addressed rapidly and the game moves to a playability footing that will stem the tide of negative sentiment. I do agree that the first few patches will be critical not only to the success of this title, but to the survival of the Kerbal IP in general.

Poll: Reviews and Perception of KSP 2 EA release v0.1
Chilkoot replied to Chilkoot's topic in KSP2 Discussion
Thank-you When you don't work for the company, you can use language and ask questions that CM's my need to avoid, but understanding discontent in clear terms is important. Heh - I knew I'd get called out on that, but it was intentional. With those "how do you feel" kind of questions, grey data points are messy, so the form needs to prod respondents into exactly 4 different shades of positive/negative. -
Realistically? I wouldn't bet on less than 2 years. Optimistically? I wouldn't bet on less than 2 years

Reviews can make or break a game. What would it take for you to leave a positive review of KSP 2 on, say, Steam or another platform where you can leave public feedback for other prospective purchasers?

A lot of clauses in boilerplate EULAs are not enforceable in many jurisdictions.
