  1. What @Geonovast said. I am recovering huge boosters in a 2.5x game (8m-10m, 40m long or so) with the use of Smart Parts to drain remaining fuel, Space Y for the 10m inflatable heat shield, and Ablative Airbrakes to stabilize the booster because they really like to tumble, and they also add a strong braking force.
  2. I suddenly have little red balls floating at what looks like the CoM with blue balls, so to speak, sliding back and forth appearing to represent CoL maybe. I have no idea what they're from. However, I also have a kitten walking back and forth on my keyboard fairly regularly who manages to turn things on that I had no existed, so maybe it's a KSP feature, don't know. Can someone explain where these come from? Using a screenshot of an EVA Kerbal as it's easiest to see, but with EVAs for some reason the ball appears off to the side.
  3. A version of the above orbital bus makes a great one-launch orbital station as well. This has room for 59 but only needs 9 crew (or 10 if you want to include an engineer for KAS work), and with several viewing cupolas to help, hab time for the 9 crew is over a year. For an interplanetary version you could increase that further. When I say single launch, admittedly it's a beast of a launcher made even larger by the increased Dv requirements of 2.5x, stock scale would be easier. For this the first stage is 6 x 8m Sarnus SRBs from BDB, second stage is an 8.625m x 40m Procedural Parts tank with a 5m BFR engine cluster with 28,000kN, and third stage is a Griffon XX with around 5,000kN. So it's a very expensive launch, but with with the Stage Recovery mod and enough oversized parachutes, I recover 99% of the value of the SRBs. And the second stage booster has a probe core and batteries and a 10m heat shield and everything else needed to fully recover it, which is good as it's around 4,000,000 (dollars? Starbucks? Kerbal Purple Dingos? I have never seen a currency). So the only part you lose is the third stage. Artemis is the Mun station, Vesta is Minmus. Yes I am mixing my pantheons. Below, a very expensive huge booster recovered from space with a 5k/sec reentry speed. The ablative airbrakes are another mod, and are really useful as these big tanks want to tumble under heavy deceleration, and they also provide large braking force so you slow down much more quickly. Also as you see I have a bunch of curved radiator panels around the tank to help dump the heat it picks up depite the big heat shield. And finally it uses the Smart Parts mod which has a fuel dump valve, as you really want to dump all fuel before trying to recover something this big. Both have various science labs, lots of science instruments, and several sets of long-term experiments to generate science data for the labs. Both will have some fuel tanks added so I can science the surface senseless with a single lander, which will come along with the fuel tanks.

  5. If something ever goes very bad, and people have to use that to escape an exploding rocket, they will by default be the most awesome people on the planet.
  6. Space Y has a 10m inflatable. SSTU has a dynamically sizable heat shield. And the largest heat shield in captivity is from Wild Blue, I think DSEV, it just magically expands from I think 3.75m to whatever it is here, like 25m.
  7. One more tip, install SSTU. His heat shield can be dynamically sized and also has a choice (at any size) of light, medium or heavy ablator. For a 3100m/s reentry from KEO you can use light ablator. For a nearly 6k reentry from Minmus, you'll need at least medium and maybe heavy. Ablator is very heavy, so for efficient design you want to take only what you need. Don't worry about SSTU being in the dev area for addons, it's been out for years and Shadowmage just prefers to keep it there for some reason. There are also a large number of very useful parts, for example, play with the just the basic fuel tank and see how many possible iterations it has.

Ok, I seem to be fixed now, unfortunately I can't tell you what version I was using since its zip is not in my downloads folder, which is yet another weird thing as I always keep the latest zip files so I do know what versions I am running. I did not even have Configurable Containers installed. The only explanation I can think of besides multiple stupids on my part is that one of your download links isn't up to date, but I'd think that would impact other people. So I'm going with stupid. Thanks for the help, much appreciated, as noted I built the station just for the Orbital Assembly Line. Now I just need a new computer to effectively handle that space station.
  11. Ok, two pieces of good news and one of not so good news. Good news is that the logging I saw above is gone, and I don't see any SSTU errors, so we can assume I was using a previous version.   12. You have to use heat shields and atmospheric braking. In JNSQ, aim for a default periapsis height of about 45k, you will decelerate enough in the atmosphere to land, and the deceleration won't be too extreme for the passengers. For non-crewed items with no Kerbal G-limits, you can aim for 30k periapsis, you'll slow down much faster and use less ablator overall. Basically you'll slow to 1000m/s or so and the heating will stop, and at that point the pod will pitch over into a near vertical drop at its terminal velocity, which is generally low enough to open any parachute. Here is a pic of me recovering a 77-person 300 or so ton orbital bus in my JNSQ game. Dragon and all pods are much easier than this to recover.
  13. Icarus Station. Room for 309 (current crew ~150), every science pod I have, massive resources, Construction assembly line plus 6 workshops, 3kEC or so in solar panels and 8 reactors, because 6 wasn't enough overkill. It's in a 750k orbit in a 2.5x JNSQ game, which made it much harder as you need 4900dv for KEO at 2.5x. Many launches >25k tons, largest was 40k tons. Final station is 3471 tons. And every piece was docked manually since using MJ is not hard enough Oh, and this game is MKS/USI-LS so it has lots of supplies and agriponics and recyclers and the like. Finally, it's mostly NF Construction and NF Station Parts, but the centrifugal habs are SSTU and there are quite a few Wild Blue parts as well. With such a large crew that will need turnover periodically due to USI-LS, I had to design a crew transport vehicle with very large capacity that was also recoverable. I did so, primarily using Wild Blue parts, including the biggest heat shield in captivity. The centrifugal habs fold for launch. It has a capacity of 77 and is fully recoverable. Although I keep forgetting to reset the struts I have stabilizing the shield in the retracted position, so during part of reentry I get many explosions on the heat shield to keep me on my toes, as you see here.

  18. I am playing 1.71 with what I believe to be the latest of all the Wild Blue mods (I am getting no nagging at launch to update). I looked in my KSP.log and found a few thousand of these errors, and checking the console in flight shows them constantly scrolling.   19. Nertea, I looked in my KSP log and found a couple things: one is DBS generating large numbers of seeming repeated log statements, the other is that it is having an issue with SSTU solar panels. I've asked about the latter in the SSTU thread as I'm not clear which side has the problem, hopefully they are not incompatible for some reason. What I see is logging where DBS walks through every existing vehicle and says it's regenerating the electrical data, then it says it found no battery storage part, even though every vehicle has battery storage. Is this for debugging purposes? It's a lot of log data that doesn't seem to be saying much.   22. No, the Close button in the Workshop UI is doing nothing. Any ideas? I was watching the console, didn't see any errors or anything logged at all for Construction, but I can provide the log if necessary.
