I've been wondering if it would be possible to locate the Soviet Mars 6 Lander on the Martian surface. A similar feat was accomplished around a decade ago when civilians discovered a likely candidate for the Mars 3 hardware. The fate of the Mars 6 Lander remains unknown to this day. Its parachute had deployed and everything seemed to be going as planned until contact was lost and never regained around the time the probe was supposed to make contact with the surface. Due to a fault in its computers most of the atmospheric data being transmitted was also useless. It's not known if the Lander made it to the ground intact or if it was destroyed, hopefully this can change soon. I'm looking for people who would be willing to take some time out of their day looking through MRO images to try and locate the Lander. The general location the probe was heading is known and a likely landing area was shared years ago but this will still be a difficult search with a good chance of turning up nothing. Nonetheless I thought it would be a fun community project if nothing else. If no one is able to assist in the search it would still be greatly appreciated if someone could explain to me how to access and look through MRO images in this area.

totm nov 2023 SpaceX Discussion Thread
Minmus Taster replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I've heard it's going to be guiding itself in from the side. Chopsticks will be facing away from vital equipment to minimize the risk. But it's certainly going to be interesting, worst case scenario we'll gat an especially spectacular crash. -
NASA's Dragonfly mission to Titan
Minmus Taster replied to James Kerman's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Was just watching Real Engineerings video on Dragonfly and they mention that the drones roaters we're 1 meter across. A METER? How large is this thing? For some reason I've been picturing something microwave sized. -

Wow, maybe taller/steeper mountains are common on smaller active worlds?
-
Wow, that is one heck of a mountain: No height exaggeration here, the Juno team calls it 'Steeple Mountain' and it's between 5 and 7 Kilometers high.

They need to just cancel the project, or hand it over to private companies entirely. By 2040 we'll have humans on mars, not to mention Tianwen 3 getting samples back over ten years earlier. Billions of dollars have gone into this ridiculous project and the money is better spent on Artemis, not that it's much better -
How did you even find this thread?

Yeah the timelines are a little messy, I used launch windows from Wikipedia and didn't factor in how fast it would be going, by just eyeballing things on Space Engine the Quaoar probe would have to launch around 2033 but could also get Neptune gravity assist on it's way. Will probably make an updated version of this at some point. On an interesting note I found the second probe would have to launch around 2038 but there also seems to be a transfer window between Jupiter and Saturn, along with a good window for Haumea or Makemake... hmmm...

This has been known for a bit now but thought I should post this here: https://www.space.com/nasa-voyager-1-communications-breakdown-solved -
Hello! I figured I would post this here as the topic of a dedicated Interstellar spacecraft has been one of much discussion for some time now and I wanted some feedback on a personal mission design of mine, specifically how realistic it is. This is based heavily on the "Interstellar Probe" concept proposed to NASA a couple years back. Please forgive my sloppy drawings The Spacecraft: Mission Profile:

Got a large amount of darkening at our max coverage. Because there were clouds we could actually see the shadow pass next to us. An interesting upside to my circumstances. -

Weather gods have truly spit in my face this time around. Dark grey clouds right when things get interesting. -

Weather is slightly better for now, can see it beginning. -

Ah the joys of being just outside the path of totality in cloudy weather, maybe next time -
2 and a half tons to orbit for something this large? Yeah I'm not so sure about this. Still a very cool idea.

Random non-sequetor question, how do they get off?

Minmus Taster replied to cubinator's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The problem lies in location and practicality. We live in Toronto (the traffic equivalent of the ninth circle) and given that I'm still in high school it's my family that calls the shots when it comes to the logistical side of things. The concern is that given how many people are flocking to Niagara that the crowds are going to be truly nightmarish. That and the fact that no one wants to drive which any resident understands after a few nasty road closures here. Oh well, were a team, and I have quite a few years ahead to plan for the next one! -

I wish but my family has other plans haha, should be fun regardless. Were literally at the edge of the projected path so it should be fun regardless of if we can see the corona. Maybe I'll catch the next one, when was it supposed to happen again? /jk -

I'm watching from my home (just a few kilometers outside of the path of totality), not sure if the experience will be similar but should still be fun! -

Traveling at speeds like that would get you atomized by a grain of dust. Starship is just fundamentally incapable of making a practical interstellar flight on it's own. -
