Ah, this is an interesting concept. I recently realized that the game is supposed to have a way to "lose" by running out of money, but it lacks any way to "win". I agree that there should be some kind of mission to be declared the winner of KSP. I think building an interplanetary vessel or large colonization mission would be a very cool way to win, and it would also allow a smooth transition into any future content if Squad decides to go that way. Details about all of your flights, crew, and acomplishments is would also be a cool feature. Perhaps in the form of a time line? I think I would want to check that out even before I officially "Beat the game"

Awesome. I've always wanted to see a list like this. Thanks for making it! As StrandedonEarth said, a list of return dates would also be outstanding. True, but also keep in mind Moho windows come up often and will be very abundent on the list. I've read that some people don't even time their Moho launches, and they just head there at any time. Moho's orbital period is around 30 days IIRC; so it doesn't take too long to rendzvous with it (on a planetary scale). I usually don't go there personally becuase the trip is very delta-V heavy, and thus takes a long time to perform the maneuvers. .

This is a super helpful map for anyone not using Mechjeb or Engineering Mod. It would be very helpful to have this map up on my phone or in the backround while I'm playing. A map showing the windows back TO Kerbin would probably be very useful as well. Nice work!

Custom Control Pad + Sneak Peek video
patrickcanttype replied to L.J. Silver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Holy cow, this is such an awesome idea. Money will be thrown your way upon release. -
I crashed a bunch in 0.20.2 and 0.21, but I've only crashed in 0.21. 1 a few times. 0.21.1 definitely seems more stable than the other options, but as others had said the loading times are longer for loading screens and SOI changes. Edit: Ninja'd and 0s make things look better

Bring back Gigantor Solar Panel attachment!
patrickcanttype replied to Rhyunix's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Agreed. Honestly it would be great if all parts had these nodes. Why not? They're super convient. -

Old 0.20 save debate: Please close, mods.
patrickcanttype replied to Naten's topic in KSP1 Discussion
The flags that are planted will be erased, as there will be new terrain (at least for the Mun), and those flags are attached to the save files. You will still be able to use the same flags for future missions, provided you copy the files over after updating -
Air intakes that require part clipping to put on generally aren't really seen as "legit" anyway, so I don't see how it requires fixing. If someone wants to use part clipping to make an OP plane or rocket, that's their business. If someone builds a complicated rocket that gets tons of intake without using part clipping; that is engineering to use the physics available, which is a fun part of playing.
-
I agree that the stock crafts should be updated. Maybe it should be a community project. Stock crafts should give players good examples of how to build spacecraft/planes. I also wouldn't mind seeing another rocket with some SRBs to help get it off the ground.

small screenshot utility This is very close to 13.46.44N and 37.15.46W on Minmus. It is near an ice lake (but the altitude is very different.)
-
I assume you mean 37.15.46W, in which case Jeb is there right now in my save and he cannot find the command pod. EDIT: nevermind, it's clearly a different location than the one in the picture.

I believe he was specifically asking about escape velocity. As for which is more efficent, I would imagine a gravity turn would be the best option. This should have a gravity slingshot effect. However, I am interested in testing this to confirm it. Even though one would be fighting gravity on a straight-up accent, I believe the delta-v spent on velocity in the verticle direction is more efficent than the same velocity in the horizontal direction. As rpayne said, you would be surrendering delta-v to gravity (which would decrease as one was further from the planet). The loss of delta-v may not be enough to make an orbital escape more efficient. I will do some testing tomorrow and report back.

Future feature? Astronaut Complex : Hire and train kerbonauts
patrickcanttype replied to johnpoz's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Yes, there aren't many skills that kerbals have that can be improved with experience. And the only skills that could be implimented (walk speed, resource gathering bonuses, or perhaps depleting less resources of lifesupport [in future updates]) would not really be worth the effort required to add an entire experience system to the game. That being said the planned feature would still be pretty cool. -
A handy chart for Aerocapture at Jool

Not just science; color coded science! With a graph! This looks very useful, and I'll have to save that calculator to my favorites! -
My first manned mission to Duna! ( Warning pic heavy)
patrickcanttype replied to firefly77's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Nice work. Getting to Duna can be tough, but getting to Duna and back with a single craft is much harder than using multiple tasks. Well done! I plan on heading to Duna for my first time with kerbals with my next mission when the phase angle comes up soon. I already have my vessle to go there in orbit, I just need to send up the crew, because I didn't use Kerbal Mainifest. I didn't have the mod installed when I launched the it into HKO intially, and I don't want to do the launch again since it took several tries to do it the first time. I didn't plan on bringing them back though. (HOME mod) Anyways, I'm impressed by what you did to make it there and back. So again, nice mission. -
Yes, iirc there was a large update after Nova joined Squad with a bunch of new parts, which were 1.25m instead of 1m. EVA and IVA were being developed when this occured and the kerbals are 1m tall when on EVA, so it wouldn't make sense for a 1m tall kerbal to exit a capsule that wouldn't fit him and his suit. On a related note- RIP 1m Command Pod

How universal is math as we know it?
patrickcanttype replied to nhnifong's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I've always liked examples like this, and while it's an interesting way of thinking, I don't think it's applicable when talking about the universal-ness of math. Sure I can say that if it is 10 o'clock and we add 3 hours, it will be 1 o'clock. Thus 10+3=1. However, we know 10+3=13, and so calling it 1 is just a different way of measuring it. 10+3=1(+12) would be a better way of describing this measurement. As numerous people have stated: Math is universal. F=ma will be applicable universally (although there may be exceptions due to forces/crazysciencethings we have not discovered) even if different notation is used. -
From the perspective of a college level physics student, after looking at the project brief, my only major critique is the apparent amount of work the students will have to do for each report. After all, if they feel like it's too much work they won't enjoy it. If they enjoy it, then they will most likely learn it better because they will be interested. For example, making them break down each stage will get redundent quickly and will be nothing more than filler-work. That being said I think it's fantastic that you're bringing the highly-educational side of KSP into a classroom enviornment, as this is the type of thing that can truley draw interest into a field of science.

Love the series, and glad to see you doing well. =)

White Owl's video series discussion thread
patrickcanttype replied to White Owl's topic in KSP1 Discussion
He usually launches it vertically from the runway. It allows him to bypass that step, plus there\'s no launch tower to crash into off the bat.
