Ways to lift a lot of fuel to orbit?
bsalis replied to Galane's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Craft shown below gets over 600 tons to LKO. Made it recently, out of interest to see how such a design would work with the Skippers added recently-ish. It's not asparagus staged. The staging is somewhat haphazard. For something this scale, structural integrity is more important. It works because the central core lifts itself by using a ring of Mainsails (since there are LT-Ns under there which are weak). The outer boosters all lift themselves with a Skipper. The most shear force between tanks can only be the force of one Skipper pushing an empty Jumbo tank. Fuel is all fed inward. By keeping the structural forces low between the tanks, it stays together. -
Player experience is part of it, however I do still believe the feel of the game has actually changed over the versions. It is more serious now, more polished, less cartoony, less simplistic. Both features, content and styling have been the cause. For example, contrast the the differences between; * The cartoony primary coloured KSC building to the current * The cute 2D Kerbal crew live feeds, compared to the current 3D ones * The feel of the physics between .15 and .16... it became more weighty with the rescale * Simplicity, pre-planets and pre-docking, to what is available now

Left-handed keyboard input mappings
bsalis replied to Ratahpla's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
This is what I use. Anything not covered is probably default. PITCH_DOWN = Keypad8 PITCH_UP = Keypad5 YAW_LEFT = Keypad4 YAW_RIGHT= Keypad6 ROLL_LEFT = Keypad7 ROLL_RIGHT = Keypad9 TRANSLATE_UP = KeypadDivide TRANSLATE_DOWN = Keypad2 TRANSLATE_LEFT = Keypad1 TRANSLATE_RIGHT = Keypad3 TRANSLATE_FWD = KeypadMultiply TRANSLATE_BACK = KeypadMinus EVA is a similar setup as above, with... EVA_Run = RightControl EVA_Jump = Keypad0 THROTTLE_UP = A (secondary = PageUp) THROTTLE_DOWN = Z (secondary = PageDown) THROTTLE_CUTOFF = X (secondary = RightControl) (i can use the throttle secondaries with thumb) WHEEL_STEER_LEFT = Keypad4 WHEEL_STEER_RIGHT = Keypad6 WHEEL_THROTTLE_DOWN = Keypad5 WHEEL_THROTTLE_UP = Keypad8 MAP_VIEW_TOGGLE = Return Note that my keyboard has the numeric keypad up againt the main key block... -
Payload is 1 Kerbal to LKO. Or mishap more often... delivered to random locations on Kerbin.

Excel sheet for calculations
bsalis replied to Wice's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
This is one thing that I think it's far more practical to just use a mod. Note that some parts in the VAB/SPH are listed with a mass, but are actually massless. -
Probably. However Tech tree will only be available in Career Mode. Sandbox will have everything unlocked. That's my understanding anyhow.

Kerbin City Community Project - Phase B - New Islands
bsalis replied to nothke's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Great work guys. Looking forward to the updates. Is there any place to submit bug reports? Such as for missing or bugged collision meshes. I have a habit of landing on everything with VTOLs so might as well put it to use and log issues. -
I had no idea this game had multiple Save's allready...
bsalis replied to Rassad's topic in KSP1 Discussion
There are multiple saves... Select persistent.sfs Control-C Control-V -
I do too. It was a pain to get to, and you're prize for getting there was an almost impossible landing. I certainly had a devil of a time getting to the surface!

Any mod that gives you more stuff to plant flags on is always a plus.

I think the last time the game was made easier was .18 Part bonding was made stronger in that version I think. Nothing recently has been changed to make the game easier that I can think of.

I am just looking at it since the rover I brought with me didn't work so well.

Ah, I think that is my post you are referring to CosmicScientist! Here is the map view pic again... As I said, both east and west coast have good flat areas near the equator. More specifically, they are... West Coast. The peninsular here, is quite flat. At around 0 39' N 192 52' E East Coast. Large plain here, not as flat but larger area. At around 0 07' N 197 48' E

Like others have said, ad hominem attacks are no way to push a point of view. Furthermore, there has always been extreme weather, regardless of climatic conditions at the time. In any case, i'm surprised the whole AGW thing is still kicking on. The beginning of the end started with Climategate. Leadership of developed nations have been backing away from it since then. Big money behind carbon credits have pulled out. Developing nations were never onboard, since it's always been a secular western thing. Some gems from Climategate... What kind of science where they doing exactly?!

If you don't want to time-warp using a different craft you can just time-warp on the pad before launch. Theres no time-warp limit when pre-launch (or landed for that matter). If you time it right you can launch directly into the transfer and not bother with an orbit at all. My understanding is that is actually the most efficient way to do it.

Congrats. Well deserved. Still think your Munclub was the best.

Well, this just lifts fuel. Classic pancake style. 3793 ton on the pad, including clamps, with 656 ton to LKO. So... what makes this work? The core has decent TWR using mainsails, so it lifts itself easily. The outer arms have many skippers with a jumbo on top. That way, the most shear force between tanks is only the force of a skipper pushing an empty jumbo. For a rocket this size, integrity is more important than other factors. Basically everything lifts itself with fuel fed inwards to payload that lifts itself. On pad LKO

I second this. Doing 153 m/s through the Mun Arch was a real jaw dropper. That on top of other ambitious achievements I wouldn't have even considered.

I tried this a while ago with a similar outcome. Clicky pic to play (it's on Skydrive)

Are more struts really better?
bsalis replied to buggy's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
More struts are not always better. More than what is needed to hold a craft together adds part count. Bad strut placement can cause forces to be directed to weak and/or already stressed part bonds. So actually may make it worse. -
Rover time on Gilly. This can only end well. Did not end well. EVA pack was much more useful.

High latitudes on Laythe are nice. Problem is high latitudes are harder to get to. My pick from Laythe...
