Well, my last try on a plane like this ended up looking like something the A-Team built in a barn they were locked in.... -
BSC: Albatross 3 - And the winner is...

I present you my entry: I decided to downsize the original Albatross to a reasonable size and this is what I came up with: A high altitude science-plane. With two Ram-Intakes and one TurboJet Engine, it can savely cruise at around 20km altitude, do science and transmit it back to the KSC. Flame outs are not problem due to the single engine configuration. With 750 units of fuel, I've taken this plane once around Kerbin and landed back at the KSC, so it's save to say that you can reach any biome on Kerbin. At 59 parts is reasonably simple. The two tricks that are build into this plane to be emulated are: 1. Bind all your science-gizmos to a action group, it makes doing science THAT much easier 2.Check the Fuel lines - you can route fuel trough a wing and avoid long, ugly fuel lines. It doesn't handle exactly like a flying Ferrari, but I think that okay with a high altitude, science plane. Also I tried to come up with a reasonably informative and funny desciption text: You can start playing the HARP >>HERE<<! -

Ah, nice to see all those different designs Keep them comming. I'm looking forward to GusTurbo's plane - I've tried more than once to build a plane that looks like a modern commercial aircraft. -

Yes, I give you guys a lot of free space so you guys can be creative. But just because I do not demand technical details doesn't mean that they are not welcome. I trust you guys to behave maturely and put your own thoughts into why your plane is a good stock plane. Not flippin' me the bird and post whatever comes to your mind just because I trusted in you common sense instead of a rigid set of rules, that lets each one of you gain points on a chart. Therefore betraying the trust I've put in you. At the same time I thinks it's funny that while asking for more rules you ignore the few the there are. Instead of answering the question I've put to you, you avoid them. This is supposed to be a fun challenge where each one of us can promote their plane in a friendly atmosphere and where we can discuss them and learn from each other. Instead you seem to try to dance around the rules where you can and mock the original intent of he challenge. -

BSC: Albatross 3 - And the winner is...
Xeldrak replied to Xeldrak's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well, technically SSTO are allowed, however - I would spare them untill we get to the Aeris 4A. We are still looking for planes, that would be good stock craft and in this case that fullfill the same roll as the albatross. Now, I'm completely fine with high altitude crafts - even though the orignal Albatross uses low altitude engines, their designers seemed to be drunk anyways. I've updated the suggestions in the OP accordingly. Now, Sirine, in how far is you Albatross a better stock craft than the original Albatross? Does it teach a Newbe anything important? Is it easy to emulate? Can you learn something by disecting it? Because you asked for more rules and when I referred to the existing guidelines you seemed content. So I guess you considered them? -

Definitely no infini gliders. If you can build a easy to handle ion planes - why not. -

Well, the usual stuff from the Guidelines applies - it's supposed to be a good stock craft, usefull for newbies. Stuff to emulate, easy to disect and so on and so on. You could also incoporate some of the new science stuff..... -
And we have a winner! Once again thanks to all the participants and congratulations to the winner! The challenge would be nothing without you guys The next challenge will probably start next Wednesday. Allright, we have our finalists! Thanks to my amazing skills in "learning how this forum works after only half a year", you now actually vote in here! The vote runs for two days and don't forget to check the BSC: Challenge Guidelines! Primary elections have started! Vote here! Please drop a few line who you've voted for! Get all .craft files in a single zip file HERE Primary elections will run for 48 hours - the six (or so) best entries will enter the final 24h-election! Please check the challenge guidelines - even if you just want to vote! And remember to come back in two days! As you all should know by now, the stock crafts in KSP are horrible for the most part. So I challenge you to come up with a replacement craft. As I have promissed in the last BSC, it's time for a new challenge! For some reason I've won the last one and once again want to thank you guys for all your votes. Anyways, we are once again on a 4 days building, 4 days voting schedule. Please note that due to reasons, I might not allways be online when a deadline runs out and you might have to wait for several hours. Please check the challenge guidelines - even if you just want to vote! This is where I've outsourced all the rules. How is this going to work? You will have 96 hours to build you craft and post your entry here with at least one screenshot and its .craft file. Also be so kind to drop us a few lines, about your craft. What are your thoughts on the design? Why is it a good stock craft? Once submissions are closed, I will post a poll where you can vote for your favourites. Depending on the number on entries, we will probably first hold a two day primary election, followed by a two day final one. Anyways, I would like to encourage you to write a few lines why you voted you that craft, it keeps the thread fresh and we all have something to read while we wait for the votes. What are we doing this time? As you allready know, we are doing the Albatross 3. Now, this plane is almost reasonable, however it does have some problems. It bends like a piece of paper when you try to fly it for lack of struts. Trying to steer it gives some strange results: I've you want to yaw, the planes yawes and rolls. Trying to roll...does something to the plane, but no rolling is involved. So, we are basically looking for a long range craft - hight speed is not necessary, just range While SSTO would technically qualify, I would urge you to submit not SSTOs - the Aeris 4A replacement will call for exactly that. So an air-breathing craft that is capable of circumnavigating Kerbin would be a good entry I'm asolutely fine with it, if you build a high-altitude plane. The orinal Albatross uses low altitude engines, but her designers were drunk anyways. Also, considering the original design - a certain goofyness might also be a good thing. I got us some nice inspirational pictures this time I got a picture of the swiss Solar Impulse, a solar powered aircraft. The Boeing 777 - in its LR variant the the world's longest-range commercial airliner when it entered service in 2006. And the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer - a plane used to circumnavigate the earth without refueling. BSC: Super-Heavy Lander - The next BSC will.....
Xeldrak replied to Xeldrak's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Thanks for your input, Sirine. Well, the previous BSC had a very gray line of "best" - and I like it that way. It's supposed to be a creative challenge as well, built what you think is best, not built so that you get the most points on a chart. All these questions you wrote down are questions the contender has to face and aswer for themselves. They are part of the challenge and answering them (at least I hope so) is part of the fun. Furthermore, I did write several of my thoughts about what the stock craft should and should not be down and several people (e.g. you) completely ignored what I wrote. For example, I allready ask you guys explicidly in the Guidelines to not simply vote for what you like. Also: This is no challenge to find the objectively best craft - it's a challenge to have fun. Thats also why I included designs, that clearly paid no mind at all to my scribbling. As I said before - we are not actually replacing the original stock craft. It's just make-believe. -
The N-1 Rocket - sadly there are only very few pictures of it Apollo first stage seperation I like this picture, because you get a feeling how big the Saturn V really was The R-7 - granddaddy to all soyus rockets. Also sadly very few pictures. Stupid soviets...
