BSC - Ravenspear Mk. 1 - And the winner is...
Xeldrak replied to Xeldrak's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
@Tidus Klein: Monday should be okay - forum allways confuses me. I'd love to see the forum work on UTC without "today" and "yesterday" in it's timestamps. On a sidenote: please do not reserve a post and later upgrade it to a submission. When your submission is ready, just post it in a new post - this way I only have to look at the new, unread posts for new submission. @Rhomphaia: Yeah, I usually try to mix it up, but because of the mishap during the Aeris challenge I decided to get the Ravenspear Mk1 out of the way. The next challenge will most likely play out in the VAB. -
BSC - Ravenspear Mk. 1 - And the winner is...
Xeldrak replied to Xeldrak's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well, the Mk.3 basically like the Mk.1 but with a focus on range - for a Mk.3 replacement, being able to circumnavigate Kerbin might actually be a design goal. With the Mk.1 you can go full power, lower range. -
BSC - Ravenspear Mk. 1 - And the winner is...

Ah, Giggle - nice that you stuck with forward swept wings, there is simply nothing that looks half a cool. Still, I think this time I will go with delta-wings. On a side note: What hight does a plane have to reach so that the flight is considerred sub-orbital? -
BSC - Ravenspear Mk. 1 - And the winner is...
Xeldrak replied to Xeldrak's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well, these are some really nice submissions This time we have a much wider spread, when it comes to difference in designs. -
We have a winner! 1st place:Giggleplex777 - C-7B 2nd place:zekes - FRAK-1 3rd place:sploden - Ravenspear Mk1 improved 07 Primary elections are done! Time for the grand finale! You can vote over here! Primary elections have started! Vote here! Get all .craft files in a single zip file HEREPlease drop a few line who you've voted for! Primary elections will run for 48 hours - the six (or so) best entries will enter the final 24h-election! Please check the challenge guidelines - even if you just want to vote! And remember to come back in two days! As you all should know by now, the stock crafts in KSP are horrible for the most part. So I challenge you to come up with a replacement craft. Yes, BSC is back - and since some of you allready spent thought on the Ravenspear, I decided to exploit that Last time we had 26 contenders, from wich you chose antbin as you winner. Let's see if we can set up a new record. We are back to a four days building, four days voting schedule. Please note, that I will have to go to university again, starting next week - so updates might not be as fast as they used to be. Please check the challenge guidelines - even if you just want to vote! This is where I've outsourced all the rules. How is this going to work? You will have 96 hours to build you craft and post your entry here with at least one screenshot and its .craft file. Also be so kind to drop us a few lines, about your craft. What are your thoughts on the design? Why is it a good stock craft? Once submissions are closed, I will post a poll where you can vote for your favourites. Depending on the number on entries, we will probably first hold a two day primary election, followed by a two day final one. Anyways, I would like to encourage you to write a few lines why you voted you that craft, it keeps the thread fresh and we all have something to read while we wait for the votes. What are we doing this time? As you allready know, we are doing the Ravenspear Mk. 1 Well, this plane has some issues. The engine setup seems dubious to me - two turbojets and one basic jet engine? Also the central engine poses a tailstrike danger. The plane will flip out, pitch is overly sensitive. It's supposed to be a high speed, high altitude plane, but has a intake/engine ratio of 2/3 - wich will lead to flame outs at ~15 km. Also note the ladder, that is simply misplaced - it's inside the winglet, although the would be enough space at the cockpit. Well, this time I don't have suche a strict idea what your plane is supposed to be - it should fullfill the role of a fast, high altitude aircraft. Keep in mind, that we will do a Ravenspear Mk2 contest aswell - so this might not be the best place for planes that can circumnavigate Kerbin - range is not a primary design goal. Now with inspirational pictures, thanks to HueHue! So, to give you some ideas, I present you the English Electric Lightning, the SR-71 Blackbird, the Saab 35 Draken and the MiG-25. well, I think I'll just wait for the next challenge
-
Aww, getting back to orbit after landing on Eve is something I never achieved....
-
Hm, does the landing have to be manned? Or can ther Kerbals stay in orbit, while a probe lands on Eve?
-
Now, concerning my vote: I wont vote for myself. Mulbin's and brobel's plane look awesome but I think thats just too much part clipping. Also, the Jet 03 suffers from trailstrike danger. So, it's AmpsterMan or antbin. Took both planes for another ride. Both are awesome planes, but the fact that the To Aeris Berbal 3a rolls when I try to yaw is a critical problem and a definite no-go for a trainer plane. So, my vote goes to the SR2-Ranger

@Falling: nope, that not happening, Primary Elections are closed. Primary elections are closen - the 24h final elections will start in about an hour It was either top 5 or top 7 - I went with the smaller one. The top five are: AmpsterMan - SR2-"Ranger" antbin - To Aeris Kerbal 3a brobel - X-2 Swift Mulbin - Jet 3 Xeldrak - CR Moloch

God - I wake up and there are three new pages @searlefm: Well, these are my personal notes. I did realized where the yaw comes from, I just wondered why you would hide the controll-sufaces in such a way. A simple, vertical stabiler would have looked much better (in my opinion) and would have been simpler. Also the ladders were a detail I looked up at every plane, I wanted the pilot to be able to climb out, walk a few meters and get back into the plane. @FallingIntoBlack: About the size of your plane: While size was not one of the design goals, simplicity was. And your plane is just very big, when it doesn't need to be - so I think it's not exactly a good example. Actually, simplicity was the reason I removed the landing chute from my plane and didn't include a escape mechanism. To say it with the words of a famous aviator: "Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away" @Antbin: Well, while I didn't get the vote - thanks for the positive feedback. Yes, I had the feeling, that the Moloch is a bit edgy for a beginner plane but somehow it felt just right for me. Seems like it like the edgy planes, since I noted heavyhanded to so many planes and really enjoyed the beta jet. No, I fear you got to go into the final six with your original version - but it looks like I'm the only one who recognized it as a negative. @Giggle: Novaworks Flysafe is Bobnova's plane.... @HueHue: I'll be away for about two weeks, I think you guys can cope with two weeks without challenge. Also - I like to manage these challenges and I wont find somebody to groom it while I'm away within the next 48 hours - wich is all the time I have left. Also, I allready learned a new word today: Dutch Rolls....sounds like a tasty, dutch dish...

You've been added - very cool video indeed. Also: Honesty bonus for just going with the missed precission landing instead of reloading
-
Well, binary is not necessary to build a computer - you can go ternary too! On the other hand, if a species can build a computer, it should be able to calculate in any base. So basic mathematical priciples and geometrics should be known to all intelligent civilizations. Also: Periodic chart - it might me arranged in a different way, but I would basically be the same.

Alright, after hours of testing, I present to you my notes: AmpsterMan +good looking +escape mechanism +very stable, hard to flip out -a little heavy handed for my taste -no action group for the ladder antbin +compact, good looking design +parachute +solar panel, although I do not consider it necessary -a little heavy handed for my taste -parachute toggles with first stage -backspace doesn't cut engine -allmost no reaction when trying to yaw -no action group for the ladder Bobnova +parachute +easy liftoff +flies quite well +simple design, easy to emulate -landing gear is really odd -no ladder -maybe the wrong engine for the job? -no abort British_Rover +ladder with toggle +fully functional abort-button -intakes aren't exactly beautifull -once again, a little heavy handed for my taste -you can eject your rear wheels? brobel +well - she's a beauty +double the engines, double the power +flies quite well -although tailstrike is hard to achieve, it's possible -sometimes explodes upon loading? -quite some part clipping -no ladder? Easily the best looking Plane in the contest, but too much part clipping, therefore hard to emulate carazvan +flies quite well +no tailstrike +fully functional abort -not a big fan of weaponization to be honest... -If you simply press space, you get havoc instead of a liftoff CreeperShift +toggled ladder +Biplane is cool somehow +two engine = more power +flies really well +no tailstrike -ASAS? -some oscilation with activated SAS overall one of my favourites - but why the SAS? FallingIntoBlack +ladder with a toggle +flies quite well +no part clipping -she's a little oversized, don't you think? -ASAS? -quite narrow landing gear for such a big bird -some oscilation iwht activated SAS Genius Evil +creative design +no tailstrike +flies quite well, once it is in the air -but yaw not really responsive -drifts to one side during liftoff, killed me several times -no ladder A creative plane, but needs more refinement - crashed severel times during liftoff Giggleplex777 +good looking +dual power +forward swept wings +easy takeoff +flies really well +no tailstrike +a ladder! +she sure is fast -no toggle -part clipping Another favourite of mine, flies like a sportscar....with wings Heagar +a ladder +with toggle +some documentation inte the info-field, thats nice +flies quite well -albeit little heavyhanded -ASAS? -While the ultra-long variation might have advantages, I'd hardly call it some worth emulating -narrow landing gear -is that the right engine for the job? The challenge was not for a long range craft -yaw? -for intakes for one engine worth emulating? Hejnfelt +no tailstrike +A ladder +with toggle! +a like how it flies, very nimble +really simple design, no part clipping, easy to emulate +actuall takes off by itself if you give full throttle and do nothing else -If give full throttle and pull up, you can get hilarious crash instead of a liftoff -SAS? -I'd guess you chose the dual-ram intake design to differentiate you plane, but I think it's kinda overkill. HueHue +I like the dual cockpits to emphasize, that it is a trainer airplane +escape mechanism +flies quite good... -bit the pitch is not very responsive -no ladder Would be a very solid choice. It's nothing fancy but exactly what the challenge calls for. Dual cockpits for extra flavour and an escape mechanism that is could give a newbee some insights into ksp creativity. Kappa73 +very compact +ladder +escape mechanism ~not sure if this is the right engine, but it does the job -really not a big fan of these half-hidden ram intakes -no toggle for the ladder:( -with 80 units of fuel a very small tank Karmacoma +ladder +no tailstrike +flies well +second cockpit for trainer ~a little part-heavy, but thats partly my fault -no ladder toggle -partclipping -braking too hard after landing can be problematic littlebattler -long range -not the most agile -no ladder -that tail is just oversized +creative design Mulbin +a real beauty +flies really well -part clipping -tailstrike danger -ladder position could be improved -no ladder toggle Read have Read +simple design +ladder -2 ladders? -no ladder toggle? -not very agile searlefm -no ladder ~magic yaw +wide landing gear +cool parachutes! -not very agile Sirine -ghost-steer -no ladder ~also: ARE YOU KIDDING ME? sploden +ladder +simple design -no ladder toggle -pitch could be more responsive Tarmenius -not big fan of SAS +good looking +ladder -no ladder toggle +escape mechanism -rear wheels could be...rearer. Unnecessary tailstrike danger during landing ThePsuedoMonkey +ladder +ladder toggle! +wide wheel base +rescue parachute +flies quite well -abort should cut the engine Toastie_Buns ~tested the ass-11 variant - looks cluttered +ladder -no ladder toggle -very narrow landing gear +very agile Xeldrak ~should have added a nice escape-mechanism ~dismissed the whole electricity thing - maybe a RTG would have been nice. Who would want to miss a RTG on a plane? zekes +awsome design -have to get out of the capsule before start -part clipping ~awesome design, but not what we are looking for -------------------- second round: AmpsterMan: she's rather big and a little heavy handed antbin: good plane, but parachute in first stage annoying and abort should cut the engine CreeperShift: I really like this plane - sadly part clipping Giggleplex777: She's not ugly! Maybe her tail is a little big, but I like it this way. She flies awesome - why part clipping?!?!?! HueHue: Still, a solid choice - could be more nimble. sploden: pitch is just not nimble enough for my tast ThePsuedoMonkey: Like a simpler version of antbin - kinda like it. So, I decided to give my vote to PsuedoMonkey - I think his Bumblebee has all the good features like a wide wheelbase, a rescue chute. He's got a ladder and a toggle for it (I don't know why, but thats an importatnt detail to me). But the overall design is simpler than antbins. Also: WHY THE PARTCLIPPING , GIGGLE?!?! I LOVE THE BETA JET! (yes, I know, you used no debug - but controll surfaces inside the plane?) god....it 03 AM....I need a bed now...
