  1. I've never rescued anyone like that. But I did once deorbit some debris once using the same method. I jettisoned the final stage to have it have a periapsis of 21km, so I just got out and pushed it a bit so it would despawn Things like that are fairly easily done, although can be time consuming. Much more challenging is rendezvousing with an orbiting ship using EVA. I've done it a few times. Last night, while on Pol, Bill decided to go to orbit without the ship. Then the other 2 (lesser astronauts) flew the ship up to him.
  2. As I understand it, your problem is not landing things with the sky crane, but picking them up. I've tried this myself, and the only solution I found was to land the sky crane first, then drive the cargo underneath, and subsequently lower the sky crane. Docking while in gravity is essentially impossible. I have done it on occasion with horizontal docking, light craft and RCS. Vertical docking somehow seems harder.
  3. I don't even bother with solar panels anymore, unless I want it to look cool, simply because RTGs are so much easier. In 0.21, it seems we will need more electricity for gyros, which may mean solar panels, or maybe not? I'm guessing at some point in the future though, solar panels will be needed, but at the moment, RTGs cover all my needs - running stock.
  4. I always thought the lakes of Minmus might be some form of glass - that way they wouldn't evaporate. Perhaps it was an asteroid with a high silicon content that flew too close to the Sun, before being captured by Kerbin? The silicon melted to form lakes, which then solidified in the troughs, leaving the hills of blue/green stuff (copper and/or something else?) exposed. I'm currently waiting for the Devs to implement a new action for Kerbals when you right click them: - Plant Flag - Lick surface Once that is done, I shall test the theory of whether or not it is mint icecream or salt.
  5. I did that last night while returning from Pol. In answer to your question, we don't have enough information. The ship should be on fire like that. Here in our physical universe, it would disintegrate. In the kerbal universe, perhaps they make their ships out of unobtanium, just so they can do crazy stuff like that.
  6. Thus my disclaimer in the sig. I suspect they truly fear me, but are worried what I will do if I find out. Honestly though, my goal was basically to set up bases everywhere in 0.19. In 0.20, the goal remains the same, but I've not got far yet in my main save. My first goal was a flag on every body. So far I've done Kerbin and it's moons, plus Ike (with a single ship). Due to a design flaw (I forgot parachutes), it's not parked at the newly constructed Duna station. Those guys are probably going to become colonists when I get the base under construction. Currently though, I am overseas for work, and this computer is not so good, but can still work, just not well, so I have been focused on return missions, and getting to all bodies. In fact, last night I returned from Pol.
  7. On this computer, 1. But it's not a real good computer. On my games machine, it's like about 500 before I notice it lagging.
  8. The gravitational constant (G) is not the same as the surface gravity of Kerbin (g). Increasing the gravitational constant would allow us to have a planet like Kerbin exert more gravity if it were composed of similar material as Earth. Force exerted between 2 bodies is calculated like so: F = G *m1*m2/r^2 Clearly, increasing the gravitational constant, will increase the force, and thus the acceleration. So, starting with a smaller earthlike planet, you have a lower surface gravity, then increasing the gravitational constant sufficiently, you can get back to 9.8m/s^2. Of course, simply increasing the gravitational constant affects other things, and there is a fine balance between all the natural forces, but the point is, you could possibly alter them to achieve a universe like the Kerbin system.
  9. Given that the matter that forms Kerbin is supposedly so dense that it's physically impossible in this universe, I'd say that it's far more far fetched that it's an experiment by an advanced civilization than an alternate universe - it's not a parallel universe, just alternate. Of course it could be an experiment by an advanced civilization which is doing it by creating a virtual reality simulation like The Matrix, where cosmological constants are not the same as our own universe, but then it's just a computer game.
  10. Currently none. The most I have had at once was 6. I basically sent a convoy of ships to Duna to build an orbiting station. It was fun managing them all as they arrived. Station core, 3 fuel ships, 2 RCS fuel ships. The only problem was I should have sent a 7th, the docking column, so it had to wait for the next window. Ships can however still dock on it, just not in convenient places.
  11. There is nothing wrong with the Kerbol system. The problem you have is the assumption that this is in our universe. It clearly is not. The Kerbol system is in another universe, where the fundamental building blocks are different to our own. The speed of light is different. The gravitational constant is different. Weak and Strong nuclear force is different. It's the only hypothesis that makes sense.
  12. Unless Squad is a publicly listed company, they have every right to keep it secret. But I do hope it's some number approaching infinity Or at least something big! The more money Squad makes, the better the game will be, so it's a win all round!
  13. I'm not sure what sort of lag you have, but my laptop here lags with just a Kerbal standing still on Kerbin. I just managed to land on Pol last night with nothing but stock, probably heading home tonight. I did a Duna return the other day. This laptop is meant for work, is fairly decent, but is not by any means a game machine. I'm glad it runs KSP well enough that I can do stuff - it simple hates Minecraft and that is unplayable, so I don't play it. If KSP were lagging as bad as what you imply, I'd simply not play it (or get a better computer).
  14. I change my mind about them being grown from plants. This theory sounds correct in every relevant aspect, though I might debate the timeline.
  15. Definitely grown from plants. How else do they survive for years with nothing but sunlight?
  16. Right click one fuel tank to display the fuel, then alt-right click the other and the resource display shows in/out buttons for each fuel type. Works for fuel, mono prop and electricity in stock.
  17. I have seen that happen occasionally. I've never worked out why though. I've managed to fly craft straight down to Kerbin from interplanetary trajectories without killing Kerbals, so I know they can handle it. In one case I had 1 of my Kerbals die in a 3 man pod, while the other 2 survived.
  18. As I understand it, the amount of delta v you save is marginal, and it's hard to set up, and easy to get wrong meaning you often waste fuel. Last night however when I went to Pol, I saved a ton of delta v from all the assists I got. 1. Laythe assist put me on a good solid Jool orbit, without even burning. 2. Small burn at periapsis got me a Tylo assist out to Pols orbit. 3. Small burn at periapsis again to get an encounter. 4. Bigger burn to get capture. The most fuel I used once I got to the Jool SOI was in the actual Pol capture. The rest of the maneuvers combined used less fuel. Not planned though, just blind luck. On every Mun encounter I have had, it's never given me a particularly good assist. Normally It's sending me the wrong way out of the Kerbin SOI, so I ignore it.
  19. I don't want to see them die from excessive Gs, but I'd love to see them "loose their lunch" (or should that be snacks), all over the camera view you have of them in the external flight screen. I think it would lead to a number of interesting challenges if it was also a tracked stat. IE most resilient Kerbal. Most "episodes" on a single launch. Least "episodes" on a single launch. etc.
  20. My Munar station gets the most use out of any station I have. Well it did. I had a ship docked there, specifically for building a Munar base around the Neil Armstrong Memorial. Ships with parts flew to the station, docked the part on the bottom of this ship then flew into the Mun (to reduce debris). The landing ship then fly down and dropped of the part, sky crane style. The station itself was a big fuel depot, with 6 orange tanks of fuel, and tons of monoprop. It had potential for unlimited amounts, but I limited it due to lag (the 0.19 version had up to 16 orange tanks but lagged at about 8). The whole setup worked fantastically. Can't give exact screenshots, due to being overseas, but here they are approximately. Basically I clone my fuel depots around every planet/moon. Version 0.19 fuel Depot: Version 0.20 fuel Depot: In 0.20 I decided to add crew capacity, the 0.19 version only had room for 2 Kerbals, but being extendible I could add crew quarters. I'm considering a new design again in 0.20 to make it more aesthetically pleasing, but functionally I am happy with it so far.
  21. Actually, I would not announce a security update that was being worked on, if a problem was found that was not yet publicly known. Simply announcing it would potentially cause hackers to start looking, increasing the risk of a breach. Of course once you fix it, then you blow your horn about it. Having said all that, I also don't think this is what was "Classified information". No idea what it is, but security seems unlikely.
  22. It's not so hard. First time yes, but once you understand how to do it, it's just time consuming. Getting to Moho is hard, because of the delta-v requirement, and I've frequently put probes in a Kerbol orbit while going there, because I ran out of fuel. The challenge is to get that extra delta-v (fuel) on the ship, or tighten your piloting skills to save fuel.
  23. I started a new save with 0.20. I currently have fuel depots around Kerbin, Mun and Duna. I have a base on the Mun and Minmus - Duna is next. I'd post pictures, but am currently overseas for a work trip. My end goal is a flag on every body, and base on every easily returnable body, meaning not on Eve and Tylo at least initially.
  24. Is it just me, or does the article imply that the guys at JPL aren't so good at going to space? Where do I send my resume of KSP acheivements to apply for a job!
