The CrossWind Take-off and Landing (FAR)
Darren9 replied to Darren9's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I did think a small plane wouldn't do so well but I'd like it to be a "bring your own" type challenge, that and you don't want my FAR planes. The B-52 had steerable rear wheels so you could land sideways in a crosswind - I might try that. Well done Voculus, you made first place! -
The CrossWind Take-off and Landing (FAR)
Darren9 replied to Darren9's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Good idea, I added some titles to attain and I'll make a list of entrants in the op. Welcome to the Crosswind Challenge -
The Grapple-Feet look great. Have you got close to setting the attach force yet? It's nice to have it low if you're in low/no gravity with just a bit of RCS to push you onto a surface - just a suggestion @ AntiMatter001, I'm not sure what sort of claw you're making, I found P-Wing quite good, with two upper and one lower in-between it's quite reliable.

Did you make your tailplane and rudder twice as big and twice as big again? You might need it in a heavy crosswind. This is a challenge to take-off and land in a crosswind, all you need to do is take-off, turn around, and land in the opposite direction - With the highest crosswind you can manage. You must take off and land on the runway, if you're blown onto the grass it doesn't count. Craft must finish in one piece. You must set either North or South wind direction (90* crosswind) and the wind-speed before you take-off. You must use an aircraft landing gear (stock/B9/KAX/Baha/FireSpitter/ect.). No low grip wheels. Any reasonably balanced mods. Any pilot aids you think may help. Must be a rear-thrusting aircraft, no vertical lift engines. You'll need FAR installed and DaMichel's basic wind mod (needs Blizzy Toolbar), it makes a constant wind in a fixed direction, not entirely realistic but with random wind it'll be hard to compare flights. Download KerbalWind (put it in GameData) Github Page Forum Page Some prestigious titles may be gained in the following windspeed categories. 0 - 2 m/s I do fly rockets well though 3 - 5 m/s My other car is just another car 6 - 10 m/s My other car is a Cessna 11 - 15 m/s My other car is a Learjet 16 - 20 m/s The certified flight instructor 21 - 30 m/s You can call me Maverick (from Top Gun) (it's an old Tom Cruise movie) (he played an ace pilot) 31+ m/s Did someone say a Hurricane is coming? Here is my jet being blown on its side in a mere 90mph breeze, hardly even a Category 2 hurricane, I think it just needs a bit more fuel to weigh it down. Voculus - 14m/s - My other car is a Learjet

Kerbodyne SSTO Division: Omnibus Thread

The latest B9 has working raster prop and firespitter.dll, I'd have a look at B9 procedural wing as well. -
I think you can just open it in notepad and change the "0.90.0" to "0.25.0", you may have to delete the "size =" line just below it because that's not in 0.25 but I'm not sure.

Finesse Interceptor Challenge
Darren9 replied to MatttheCzar's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
22 points I think, can launch with up to 800 fuel and/or more missiles/bombs than can reasonably fit under the wings, makes mach3 with a reasonable load (FAR), relies heavily on BD countermeasures against enemy missiles, it's possible to attempt evasive manoeuvres but there's only three struts each side and bits can fall off if you're not careful. -
Peer Gynt Suite No.1, Op46 In the Hall of the Mountain King (performed by London Philharmonic in this particular KSP video) I've also done "Jeb on a G-String" (Bach - Air on a G-String) and "Jeb and the Sugar Plum Fairy" (Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy) but they're only half classical and half modern dance so I won't paste them up My current favourites are:

0.90 Kerbal Weather Systems! Alpha 0.5.3 WIP! (Jan 2)
Darren9 replied to silverfox8124's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
70km/h is enough to deal with for me I think Is there/could there be some way to "look out the window" and asses the wind/weather from the VAB/SPH before making the trek out to the runway and ending up sat there with a craft that can't possibly take off in the conditions you find? -
I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind, when there's no wind you have to run along and pull your kite, so that's what I did. It's a Russian kite, you don't steer the kite, the kite steers you and you have to turn the vehicle to stay roughly underneath it as it seemingly goes wherever it feels like. I was up on a single string for 3 mins before it lead me into the water. Edit - I think a traditional kite may be possible, it just has to have enough lift for its self but not enough for the Kerbal as well who only weighs an extra 0.09T - a fine line I haven't been able to get to so far.

I might of fixed it, seems to load OK in 0.25 and 0.90 with the new stock part revamp. There's the F23 VTOL (two versions, the no weapons version doesn't need BD Armoury) and the F22 Raptor only works in near/far and needs B9-Aerospace-Procedural-Parts instead of P-Wing. Let me know if it still doesn't load. www./F22FAR_F23VTOL.zip

I'll have to make a new one, it looks like what's happened is that particular part was in one of the 0.25 versions of Stock-Part-Revamp in an "extras" folder and in the new 0.90 version it's not, the extras have gone. I have a new one in 0.9 that looks a bit better and uses B9 procedural wings and not P-Wing and (only) works with Near/Far, would you like that or just the old one updated?

Kerbodyne Aerobatics Championships

^ With the navball showing 12.5G, does Flight Engineer show the same as the stock accelerometer? There's going to be issues on which must be used. Also TimeControl slow motion puts another twist into the physics engine - calculating smaller steps will show higher peek G's?. Also with a screenshot there's not really a need to survive a maneuver, how will you know? -
I quite like flying this at the moment, it's sort of half way between an F22 and F35.

The Most Fabulous KSP Girandola
Darren9 replied to rodion_herrera's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
^ Thanks, here's the advance warning I added on a Herp command chair after reading Rodion_herrera's comment, welded up the frame into one piece with Ubizor so I could run it and got Kaboom mod for the explosions - unfortunately it deletes the smoke trails when it detonates boosters. -

Very impressive Fengist, makes mine look a bit bland I haven't given up though, I'll be back - with some explosions. -

I launched a 62m diameter one with 22 boosters, surprisingly stable, I think I could go bigger.
