  1. Impressive work. That's a rather clever design for a lander you're showing off there as well.
  2. It has recently come to the attention of the moderation staff that the discussion in this thread has gotten rather heated, and that tempers have been flaring as a result. Please remember to keep things civil.
  3. Welcome to the forums! I personally was never big in the model rocketry scene, but I think I know exactly where you're coming from, though I've come at it from a different angle. Since I was young I had always thought it would be cool to become an astronaut (though that's staggeringly unlikely these days, given the twists and turns my life has taken) or go to space some other way (slightly more likely, though still way out there unless commercial space tourism gets much less expensive), and I cut my teeth reading my dad's old science fiction classics and imagining what it would be like to pilot an actual rocket to another planet. Kerbal Space Program isn't quite the same as the real thing, but it's much closer to it than anything I've invested my time in before. Also, the smell of black powder never gets old Feel free to poke around and see what interests you. In general we try to promote a friendly and positive community for fellow KSP enthusiasts to share their creations, thoughts, and experiences. If you ever get stuck in the game, feel free to ask questions or check out the tutorials (especially those I've tried to collect in the Drawing Board, which is linked through my signature), and we'll also welcome any mission reports or other creations you may choose to share.
  4. Impressive work on that VTOL (though it's a shame there's no daytime screenshots of it...). I've always wanted to mess around with those, but I'll have to improve my skills with spaceplanes in general first.
  5. Since the gallery in question does contain material that goes against forum rules, I've taken the liberty of removing the link. The moderation staff's thanks go out to those who brought this to our attention. If there's a "sanitized" version out there that doesn't contain the offending flags, feel free to link to and discuss that instead. On a related note, keep in mind that discussions of a political, ideological, or religious nature are still against forum rules.
  6. One other setting you might want to play around with is the Max Physics Delta-Time per Frame slider under the General settings. If my understanding of what that slider does is correct, then it determines how frequently / intensively the physics engine runs its calculations. Moving it further to the left (and thus decreasing the number of calculations per frame) might give you better overall performance (at the expense of slightly less accurate physics). EDIT: Noticed you already tried that. Forgive me for failing a spot check
  7. Since this thread is a bit old and we've already got a newer, active thread on this issue (that Claw has helpfully already linked to), I'll be closing this one. In general, it's better to start a new thread for your specific issue or finding a thread that someone's posted fairly recently, since bringing older threads like this one to the top runs the risk of bringing up information that might be outdated (and thus, confusing to new players) for the current version of the game. Have a nice day
  8. Welcome to the forums! Can you go into a little more detail about what exactly happens to the rocket when you reach 14000 meters? Are you using any mods at all, or is this happening on a stock install of the game?
  9. Welcome to the forums! Glad to hear you've been enjoying the game so far. Hope you make it to the Mun, and don't be afraid to ask questions if you're having a hard time getting there, or to let us know when you do so that we can pass around our congratulations.
  10. Most impressive. I find these much easier to follow than the old spreadsheet format
  11. I'd like to take the opportunity to point out that technology is an inherently iterative process,* with each innovation building on the technological base created by the many other discoveries that came before it. The more important question is not "Who invented it?" but rather "For whom can it be the most beneficial?", which I hope everyone agrees in this case would be "All mankind." Also, discussing who gets the credit for inventing the rocket is slightly off-scope for this topic Definitely always nice to see more coverage for KSP, of course. The matter of most documentation being in English is one that's been at the back of my mind for a while myself, for various reasons. * One cannot take sand from the beach and make a dataprobe, etc.
  12. First, welcome to the forums! Unfortunately, I believe this idea falls under the "Random failures / malfunctions" category of the What Not To Suggest list. That doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad suggestion, just that it's something that's been either confirmed or or rejected as a new feature by SQUAD themselves, or it's been brought up and discussed so often with so many of the same points and counterpoints brought up that the forum moderation staff believe that users' time would be spent much more productively discussing other ideas that aren't on that list. While we appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to make a positive contribution to the game's future development, you may want to review that list closely before posting your suggestions. Have a nice day
  13. It would certainly be a fitting tribute. If I recall, Scott Manley's professional academic work dealt with asteroids (although as my memory's a bit fuzzy on the subject, I'd rather he supply the details himself if he's so inclined). At any rate, add me to the list of those eagerly looking forward to the fruits of SQUAD and NASA's collaborative efforts
  14. It's always the little things... Anyway, once you've gotten the bugs worked out of the design, let us know how the mission itself goes
  15. My apologies for not posting over the last few weeks. My internet connection has been experiencing (partially self-inflicted, I'll admit) technical difficulties. As always, I'm impressed by the level of detail and imagination you put into your reports. I especially like the way you managed to work a reverted flight into the narrative by portraying it as a dream Bill had in-universe
  16. I'm going to third this statement, and all the advice that goes with it. EVA is easy to mess up if you try to rush it, so take it slowly and delicately. I'm also going to add that, if at any time you feel like you're losing control of the situation, don't try to "correct" for previous errors, as you'll more than likely end up overcorrecting (until you get an instinctual feel for how EVA works -- your "space legs," if you will); instead, try to stop all motion relative to your target as nearly as you can, then gradually work your way back from wherever you "stop."
  17. First off, welcome to the forums! Since we already have a thread for that game, I'll be closing this one. You may wish to continue in this thread, which has already been set aside for the same game as the one you're wanting to start. Have a nice day!
  18. While I appreciate that y'all feel strongly about the issue and have kept the discussion mostly civil, I'm afraid that discussions of a political, religious, or ideological nature (including discussing and recommending public petitions) are against forum rules. Therefore, I'm going to have to close this thread. Y'all have a nice day
  19. As I always try to do when the subject of the rocket equation comes up, I'm going to recommend you do a little light reading. Specifically, I'm going to recommend reading the first four pages on the basics at MyKSPCareer.com and these three pages at Atomic Rockets. Both sources are written to discuss how things like delta-v, thrust-to-weight ratios, and other important variables for rocket engines and the craft they propel are important and what you can do with them to start optimizing your own designs. I especially found the Atomic Rockets pages to be very helpful when I was first getting into the game myself. Hope this helps
  20. I've done it occasionally, usually with Jeb. (He survived this particular one, by the way. Those helmets are tough.)
  21. First off, welcome to the forums! I appreciate that you've taken the time to offer your suggestions on how the game might be improved, and I don't in any way mean to rain on your parade. However, a number of the mods you've listed (or, more to the point, the concepts that inspired their creation) are indeed on the What Not To Suggest list. Items on that list aren't necessarily items that are considered bad for the game, but they're features that either 1) SQUAD has already made an official statement confirming (in which case making the suggestion is redundant) or denying that they're already intended for the final game, or 2) suggestions that have been made so often that there's rarely anything new to add to the discussion that hasn't been brought up many times before. Also, while it's not so much a blanket prohibition as a point of general etiquette, when making a suggestion, it's generally better to suggest adding the features or concepts that the mod implements rather than simply suggesting that the mods themselves be added, as that allows the features to be discussed on their own merits as candidates for inclusion in the game rather than restricting the discussion to one way that that feature has already been implemented by a third party (which may not be the only option available to the developers). In light of that, I'll be closing this thread. However, if you come up with something original, novel, and interesting that you'd like to see in the game that isn't on the What Not To Suggest list, feel free to share that idea in the future
  22. I'm going to second Taki117's recommendation. While it was originally designed before official subassemblies were a thing, I used a similar process to create my own horizontally-landed rover:
  23. I did it a fair bit back in my early days with the game, after I learned about delta-v and all that fun stuff but before I heard about Kerbal Engineer, MechJeb, and such things. I do like to work out things by hand when I first learn them, just so I can get a better handle on how it works (although once I'm certain of that, I'm more than happy to automate the process so I don't have to spend so much time).
  24. Huh. I was discussing this very documentary in another thread a while back, but I forgot what it was called or where I could find it. Glad to see it's still around!
  25. Shuffling this over to the Science Labs, since it's discussing a real-world mission. Carry on
