[CLOSED] Kerbin and Beyond: a Maturing Space Program
Specialist290 replied to Northstar1989's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Don't worry about taking a hiatus. We've all had moments where we need to recharge our batteries and focus on something else for a bit. Looking forward to seeing more -
Looks like this discussion's been getting a bit off-course and also a bit heated. I'll be closing this temporarily while we get things sorted out so that we can get it back on the rails... EDIT: After further review, we of the moderation staff have determined that, while it's an interesting subject and worthy of discussion, it's not one suited for our forums. We have rules against "discussions of a political, ideological or religious nature," and due to the nature of the way the current calendar's "zero year" has been chosen and the implications thereof, it's extremely difficult to discuss the subject in a productive manner without slipping into religious or ideological territory. There's a good reason we have that particular rule in place, as the increasingly vitriolic tone of the last few pages bears witness to. As a final note, please remember that personal attacks, accusations of trolling, and other such remarks are also against forum rules. While there's nothing wrong with a reasonable debate involving coherent and well-constructed arguments, don't let your disagreements turn personal.

Physically correct?
Specialist290 replied to KillPinguin's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I've never tested it myself, but from what others have said in the past about their own tests, KSP follows classical Newtonian physics rather than relativistic ones. There's no mass or time dilation. -
Docking: From Navball to First Station, and Beyond
Specialist290 replied to Starwhip's topic in KSP1 Tutorials
Feel free to continue. There's no such thing as "too much useful information" -
I've taken the liberty of moving this thread to the Science Labs, which is where threads for questions about real-world science and orbital mechanics should go. Even though it appears the question's already resolved, we don't want other people coming along later and getting the wrong idea about what goes where.

I'd highly advise you to get in touch with the man himself. You can send him a Private Message through this link to his profile Locking this, because having public threads discussing individual forum members is a really bad idea.

From what I've seen, there's really no set schedule to exactly when the Daily Kerbal gets posted during the day. Rest assured, it should be out soon enough

Glad to hear you're still working on this, Arrowstar. I'll definitely be looking forward to taking the new version for a spin.

Normally I'd close something that's been raised up from the depths like this, but since it's still pretty relevant and has sparked a productive discussion, in the words of a popular image macro: "I'll allow it." Getting back to the topic at hand: I've found the Flyby Maneuver Sequencer that comes with Arrowstar's Trajectory Optimization Tool to be extremely handy for plotting missions that involve using a gravity assist from one body to get to another. From what I gather, though, there's no easy solution to finding the optimal launch window, so the program has to "brute-force" a solution by calculating the equations for several different alignments and picking the best from the lot.

Mission reports from my own Space Program
Specialist290 replied to Akinesis's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
The short-fueling, of course. I mean, surely in our world, the administrators would trust the astronauts in question to be professional enough not to pull a silly stunt like that, right? I kid, of course. As always, I like sly little references to real-world events like that. -
Selamat pagi!* Glad to hear you've been enjoying the game. Keep us posted on your future accomplishments, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. We're a generally friendly bunch, as you've already seen * That is literally the only Malay phrase I know.

Given how old this particular challenge is, it's probably better just to start a new thread with guidelines updated to take into account the changes that have been made to the game since then. I'll be locking this one up.

Welcome to the forums! Since you mentioned that you're tips and ideas, you may want to take a look at the Drawing Board, which is linked to in my signature. It's got a lot of tutorials and other such things that might help you develop your skills or give you inspiration for your next big problem. Also, feel free to share any of your questions -- or your accomplishments -- here on the forums as well

I think it's safe to say that this discussion ran its course long ago.

Minmus slippery rovers?
Specialist290 replied to makinyashikino's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Another tip that might be useful: When driving on low-gravity bodies, disable the drive on the rear wheels. Otherwise, your rover will want to pivot nose-up, pulling the front wheels off the surface and making it difficult to control. -
Mission reports from my own Space Program
Specialist290 replied to Akinesis's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Best of luck with the move. Hope to see the mission writeup for Aquarius XI soon! As for the little incident with the Aquarius X: I'm finding that situation a bit too contrived to be believable. Surely something like that would never actually happen here in the real world, right? -
[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Specialist290 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
As the local moderator who's just passing through, I can vouch that this exactly is one reason among several for why we enforce on-topic discussion. If we didn't, timely and relevant information that could help others' experience with the game would be overwhelmed by off-topic posts that would be difficult to wade through. Let's try to keep this thread on track, shall we? EDIT: Had to clean up a few more off-topic posts after this one. For the record, continuing the discussion in question after the moderator has told everyone to take it elsewhere is probably a bad idea. -
Welcome to the forums! You'll be able to find plenty of good tips in the " What are the most important things you've learned about playing KSP to pass on?" thread in Gameplay Questions and Tutorials. I also maintain a list of tutorials at the Drawing Board, linked in my signature; many of them are specifically written for new players. Also, if you have any specific questions you want addressed, feel free to start a thread asking it in the appropriate subforum. Hope this helps!

Delta V AND TWR Calculator

When in doubt: Quicksave, then try it anyway Let us know how it goes. We'll get you to Duna yet! -
Delta V AND TWR Calculator
Specialist290 replied to g0tchas's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Hmm... Looking at your design now, with decent piloting you should be able to get into LKO with stages 13 and 10, at least with stock aerodynamics. From there, stage 8 should be enough to get you out to Duna and still have a little fuel left over, even if you completely emptied stage 10 out getting into LKO. In fact, I'd say that with decent piloting and taking into effect that you can aerocapture / aerobrake at both ends of the trip, you should be able to make the trip out to Duna and back with delta-v left over to spare. EDIT: Ninja'd, as seems to be the running trend. -
Delta V AND TWR Calculator
Specialist290 replied to g0tchas's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I'm suspecting that this is the heart of the issue. Making efficient interplanetary transfers is as much about making the transfer at the right time as it is about meeting the minimum delta-v requirements. You can make transfers outside the optimal windows, but it generally takes much more delta-v than it would otherwise. -
I am in an escape trajectory out of KSP...
Specialist290 replied to Commissioner Tadpole's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I've taken the liberty of merging your post into a similar thread that's been discussing the same topic recently, partly to keep the forum tidy and partly because you might take comfort in the fact that you're not alone I've elaborated on the point a bit in an earlier post, but the short version is that sometimes it's better in the long run to acknowledge that you're burning out on the game and take a short break to focus on other things you enjoy. If you truly enjoy the game, you'll certainly come back to it, and we'll still be here to welcome you back. -
Flotillas: A Primer in 3 Chapters PLUS APPENDIX FOR 0.25
Specialist290 replied to Geschosskopf's topic in KSP1 Tutorials
Makes sense. Never did that much digging into the properties of kethane when I was still using the mod more regularly, and I guess I never caught on to the fact that the fuel was actually heavier than the kethane itself. -
I can see how using multiple kerbals to speed up a process might be handy for time-intensive experiments (if they ever get implemented), where you might need some kind of speed boost to properly finish certain contracts on time and / or receive a bonus for finishing ahead of schedule. That might make such a feature rather useful. Of course, what I'd really like to see (partially tying in with a suggestion I made earlier) is an extra tier of experiments that takes data you've already gathered and refines it. Requiring multiple kerbals to synthesize multiple reports into new results on a 1:1 basis with the final value of the "synthesized" report dependent on the number of reports that go into it might serve to encourage multi-crewed missions rather effectively.
