Um, Ike? Could you scooch over a bit?
Specialist290 replied to Dizzle's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
If you're going to change your conic draw limit, what you'll want to do is find the line in your settings.cfg file in the main game directory that has something like "CONIC_PATCH_LIMIT = 3" (at least, I believe 3 is the default) and change the number to something higher. That will affect the number of Sphere of Influence transitions the game draws the orbit through. As for collision woes: As long as it displays a periapsis indicator in the Ike SoI phase of the orbit trajectory, you should be safe -
This probably should be in the Space Lounge, too. Moving Impressive work!

Here's Your Chance to Own a Piece of the Space Race
Specialist290 replied to LittleBigWig's topic in The Lounge
Moving this to the Space Lounge I've got my eye on that license plate, personally. Either that or the cosmonaut camera. Now if only I had the money for either... EDIT: Or the flight helmet. That one might actually be in my range. -
[CLOSED] Kerbin and Beyond: a Maturing Space Program
Specialist290 replied to Northstar1989's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
As I always say: Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. Rough luck with accidentally overwriting your quicksave; I've had that happen to me a few times as well (the most recent one being last night, as a matter of fact). Of course, it's often a better story when you have to overcome some sort of unexpected adversity, so in a way it's a bit of a blessing in disguise (at least for us, the readers ). Here's to hoping Jerbo and Donely Kerman make it home safely! -
Suggestions for a good Mun payload lander.
Specialist290 replied to zukalop's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
If you're looking to move anything really heavy, a while back I came up with something like this for another user: It's only a "proof of concept" design, so it's lacking a lot of little things like lander legs, batteries, and power sources. Part of the idea was to give it as wide a footprint as possible to allow larger modules to fit comfortably underneath it. All values listed in the KER display are relative to the Mun, for added convenience. Here it is with a Big Orange Tank for a simulated payload, showing it can comfortably land one on the Mun with plenty of fuel to spare (with good piloting). -
Delta-v for Joolian grand tour
Specialist290 replied to TheMontgomery's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
magnemoe's numbers are mostly consistent with those I derived for Vall, Laythe, and Tylo from alexmoon's Launch Window Planner a while back. It helps that those three are in resonant, same-inclination orbits, so the ideal transfer windows tend to stay constant and happen at regular intervals. -
Yeah, no real reason to revive this old thing. Better off making a new thread for the topic instead. On that note, if you spot a case of thread necromancy like this, don't keep bumping it -- use the Report feature to bring it to the attention of the moderation staff quickly and discreetly.

[CLOSED] Kerbin and Beyond: a Maturing Space Program
Specialist290 replied to Northstar1989's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
The switch to narrative style for that one post was a bit unexpected, but I ended up liking it -- I think you have a natural talent as a narrative writer. Keep up the good work; I'll be looking forward to seeing Jebro and Donely get "boots on the ground" on Duna soon -
I'm personally partial to the idea of having optional, entirely voluntary, and context-based contracts that provide some form of extra incentive and direction to players who choose to accept them and that also nudge players towards achievements they haven't yet accomplished. If balanced correctly, players who are skilled enough could play the entire game without needing to take them, while those who want the extra direction could use them to guide their own choices, and new players who don't know what to do right off the bat have tangible goals they can aim to accomplish within the game's confines.

Just so you know, pat8996, I've removed the link to the add-on's download site since you didn't provide a license or access to the mod's source code, in accordance with Forum Guidelines. Once you've provided both of those, you can re-add the download link as well; until then, however, we can't allow you to link to it from the forums or on Spaceport. Have a nice day

I'm going to fall on my default suggestion for this sort of situation: Construct a replica of an Easter Island moai statue entirely out of structural plates, then launch it into space and land it in some out-of-the-way location to baffle future generations of space explorers.

Early adventures of the Raven space program
Specialist290 replied to RavenX13's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Suddenly, you find yourself elsewhere than where you started... First off, welcome to the forums! Also, glad to see that Jebediah was able to get out of that scrape alive and well. A harrowing experience, to be sure. -
Since you've asked: The "before" shot was my first Mun lander design, from somewhere back in 0.18 or so when I barely knew what I was doing: It made it there and back, but it was an incredible hassle getting it both built and flown. The "after" pic is from one of my more recent Mun lander designs (not Apollo-style this time): Much more practical than that other massive monstrosity Also, since I took all the trouble to dig it up (before rereading the original post and realizing I was looking for the wrong thing), here's an older post where I worked out the math for optimizing a payload to fit a given mission. It's only a single-stage calculation, and Kulebron covers the same subject in a little more depth on his website, but I thought it might be useful.

Favorite Parts Category?
Specialist290 replied to cyoung_mi's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I believe there is a mod that allows you to do something like this, although I don't remember what it is off the top of my head. -
Banned for not understanding that posts in the Space Lounge don't count towards postcount whatsoever.
-
While I appreciate you want information, bumping a months out-of-date thread is probably not the best way to go about it. I'd advise making a new thread in General Add-on Affairs, or asking that question in the thread for the mod itself. Thread closed. Have a nice day

Welcome to the forums! Vanamonde pretty much has it covered right there. Also, feel free to check out the many tutorials I've collected in the Drawing Board, which is linked in my signature. Hope this helps!
-
Generally well-explained. Nicely done The only real quibble I have in its current form is that you mixed up escape velocity and exhaust velocity, which are two very different things.
-
Always nice to see a new story from you, RogueMason. As I longtime follower, I'll be expecting great things as usual

Welcome to the forums! Glad to hear that you've been enjoying the game so far. As for tutorials, I maintain a list of what I consider to be some of the more high-quality ones at the Drawing Board, which is linked to in my signature. In particular, you might want to check out this tutorial for a quick, illustrated introduction to how orbits work and how you can manipulate them with your rocket to your advantage. Feel free to ask questions in the Gameplay Questions and Tutorials subforum, as well. Hope this helps!

Heard about this a few weeks ago. I've been meaning to check it out myself.

Hullow! Forum n00b but not a KSP n00b...
Specialist290 replied to trevize1138's topic in Welcome Aboard
Welcome to the forums! Nice work on getting out to Jool and its moons. Feel free to keep sharing your exploits, or to hop into any discussion that catches your fancy. You'll find that we're all big KSP enthusiasts here, so you should fit right in. -
Gravity assist to reduce delta v?
Specialist290 replied to Turvok's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I can confirm that gravity assists can be extremely helpful if you manage to get a good one. Just ran the numbers using Arrowstar's Trajectory Optimization Tool (extremely handy for this sort of thing) and compared the delta-v numbers for a direct burn to Moho vs. a Kerbin -> Eve flyby -> Moho trajectory. From what the trajectory planner tells me, you can shave off ~1000 m/s from the departure burn by waiting for a good time to set up a gravity assist. -
Mission reports from my own Space Program
Specialist290 replied to Akinesis's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Good job, and good writing. That must've been a harrowing experience. I can almost picture a small kerbal family and their kerblings huddled around a television, watching as the local Walter Cronkite stand-in narrates the emergency...
