Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical questions
Gargamel replied to DAL59's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I would think so. You swat one out of the air with a fly swatter, crashing it to the ground, and it gets up and flies away. -
KSP crashes to desktop very frequently
Gargamel replied to erikths's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
If you read the rest of the thread, apparently nobody knows what's going on, so don't feel bad. Glad you got it to work. So to clear it up, how much RAM do you have? Nope, still don't know what is going on, saw your above post. Sigh... Well this one makes sense. This one does not. As it's getting numbers bigger than it knows what to do with, it just gives funky results. I think we can use this as a flag in the future. Of course, the KSP.exe vs KSP64.exe bit might give it away a bit sooner. -
Curse Mods Unreliable?? News flash to me!

KSP crashes to desktop very frequently

I scoured the error log looking for that.... sigh.... whoops. So yeah, KSP64 might make a difference then. I can read this a couple ways. One, there is 2gb free right now, after the game crashed, so the game only has 2gb to play with. But that is the one I'm rolling with, so with the 65% in use, it seems we have about 4gb of ram, and over half of it is in use. I dunno, I have never figured out those lines on the log, they're kinda ambiguous. But I think there's not enough free RAM to play KSP with that mod load out. Or as you say, it can't be addressed by the game. Either way, try KSPx64. -
Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical questions

Ignoring the fact that it would get destroyed by the firing of the bullet... If we were to glue a fly to the back side of a larger caliber super/hyper-sonic bullet, would the fly survive until landing? Would the low pressure zone behind the bullet keep it safe and tidy? *Bringing this thread back on topic* -
KSP Running poorly/at low frame rate
Gargamel replied to JuanboNo5's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Gonna ask a dumb one.... Have you rebooted since starting to play again? I have found when KSP starts to run crappy, it's time for a reboot. Just turn it off, and back on again reboot. Also, can we get a definition of laggy? Is it slow to react, or does it pause and stutter every few seconds? -

But that will only help if they're using a 64bit OS and have >4gb RAM. Seems to me they only have 2gb ram. I couldn't see the OS, but with only 2gb RAM, a 32bit OS is a strong possibility. IF your machine is only running a 32bit OS, then you should consider reducing your mod loadout. Or get 2gb more ram. That should be fairly cheap, and would be the "easiest" solution, just drop in the new chips and off you go. (assuming you have the physical space to add more, you might have to get 4gb worth and replace the old ones) -
CKAN wont download
Gargamel replied to More_Heat_Shields's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
You are best off asking in the CKAN thread, where all the CKAN gurus hang out. But maybe @HebaruSan can direct your question better. -
Oh, very true, but for the sake of discussion, I was simplifying what BOINC did down to "It runs when your screen saver is on". Yup, something I always found very cool. They also do "high scores lists", where they show the amount of data processed. I've been running various BOINC projects for close to 20 years now I want to say, and I'm nowhere near the top. Some of these teams set up whole networks just to run BOINC. Not mention, it's a screensaver. Some of the graphics the projects employ make for some pretty cool visuals. One of the reasons I'm hesitant to remove E@H is that the sky map the is spinning on my screen is very cool looking. I've had visitors over that go "what is that?", and it's been a good conversation piece. But of course, the scenery is secondary to the research.

Kebal calendar mod/Mission elapse time mod?
Gargamel replied to Cloakedwand72's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
It doesn't have a calendar view (that I know of), but KAC will do all those, and a lot lot more already. You can set an alarm on a ship without a node established, and then have it repeat every x days. Get KAC and play with it's functionality. There's a lot of things in that mod. NOt sure what you mean by a MET mod though... -
They picked up a neutron merger a few months ago IIRC. https://www.ligo.caltech.edu/page/press-release-gw170817 These kind of don't apply here Kerb, as we're talking home PC's, and not super computing. While, yes they do apply to PC's, but with BOINC, you can usually on run one program at a time. So if I have 4-5 programs installed, my PC will cycle through them one at a time, and only when the screen saver is running. If one of these programs is obsolete, in this case Einstein@Home, then I'd rather drop that one and pick up another to crunch numbers. So it's not a matter of how much data can I process, but which data do I process?

Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical questions
Gargamel replied to DAL59's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I did not, but that only adds 1% by my numbers. 20kg of anything is about the limit of anything I would want to regularly pick up on my own. I have no problem lifting can lift 100kg from the ground with some effort, but I don't want to do it repeatedly through out a day, loading a machine to cut it or something. Plus, I usually never dealt with stuff over ~3mm, so for that mass, the plate gets quite long/wide, and is difficult to handle on your own, so a second set of hands always helps. But considering the limits for a person to carry and still be effective at what ever they are doing is around 40 kg, having 50% of it in just armor really limits what else you can carry (ammo, supplies, etc). Hence why they are using ceramics. -
Search engines also use 'spiders'. A type of bot that just crawls over every link it can find. A lot of the guest users you see on forums are just spiders correlating the site for their search results. Some have even been programmed to create accounts for the forums that require them to even view posts. Back in the day, on another forum I used to be a mod on, we had to contact yahoo and ask them to only send a few of them, as they were filling up our user lists, even though you didn't need an account to view. Within a month or so, the number of random signups had dropped. This was before Captcha was used a lot, and one of the reasons it is used a lot now.

That was my thought too. If anybody has ever tried rock climbing or cave diving, you'll know that your guide ropes dragging on the rock surfaces causes a lot of friction, and can cut through a rope if your not careful. A tethered EVA around an asteroid might not be practical at all, as you will possibly get it stuck on rock surfaces and a cut tether makes for a bad day. I wonder if you could create a weak "artificial gravity field" using gimballed thrusters. You would orient yourself on the asteroid surface in a standing position, and then fire these thrusters, which would provide just a gentle force to keep you on the surface. A gyroscope would keep the thrusters pointing in the same orientation as you work, keeping you on the surface. They would be used similar to how a camera gimbal or Quadcopter gimbal works. The thrust would be small enough to allow for a sufficient fuel supply.

Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical questions
Gargamel replied to DAL59's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Having working in a titanium fabrication shop (sheet metal cutting, bending, and welding), I can only say I'm surprised at that number. 20kg of Ti is a LOT of Ti. 17.5kg is still a lot of Ti. Way more than I would have thought necessary for a vest. Your numbers may be thrown off here. In the medical field (I was a medic too), we go by the rules of 9's. It is used to do rough calculations in the field (and in the hospital) for estimating burn coverage. Various areas of the body are all units of 9% or fractions of it. The chest and back each count for 18% of the total surface area of a human adult. So if take into account that a vest will only cover a portion of that amount, say 2/3 of each, then that's 24% total. The burn coverage includes the sides and flanks, which a plate won't be able to cover. The average adult male has a total surface area of 1.9 m2. So 24% of that is .456 m2. We can argue over the specifics if you'd like . So it looks like you'd need about half the plates you estimated. 4500 * .0065 * .456 = 13.338 kg. That's assuming a 1/4 inch of Ti will stop a rifle round. So maybe not half. Still a lot of Ti, but a more manageable amount for wearing. I don't know much about sorbothane (Hey, they're about 30 minutes down the road from me!), but I had worked out a design of about 1" kevlar and epoxy, sandwhiched between .1" Titanium plates with the intention of reinforcing police patrol car doors. The officers would use the doors as cover, as they already do, bu now the doors would actually (hopefully) stop high powered rounds. Looking at the Sorbo specs, @DAL59,I don't think it would be very good for penetration. A bullet resistant material needs to flex under high impact forces, but not be penetrated. I think it works well for cushioning stuff with large surface areas, but not for points. Consider that bullet vests using kevlar are not very useful against being stabbed with a knife. The point of a knife will separate the fibers, allowing it to enter. Stab vests are made from a different construction than bullet vests. The Ti plates would slow the bullet some, but the sorbo wouldn't do that much, allowing the 'point' forces to propagate through. Sorbo as a backer behind ceramic plates might help some, but I don't know if the added weight would be offset by it's usefulness. For it to absorb the energy, it would have to be flush against the next layer down (person). If there's a gap, the "oomph" of the impact would still be transferred to the person. One of the biggest issues with armor like this is wearability. They are hot and cumbersome. Having a soft rubber layer clinging to your body would not be very comfortable, as it would not breathe, and you would get sweaty very quickly. Which is an issue in hot climes, and can be deadly on it's own in very cold. Ceramic plates are better than metal for this application, rather than metals. They are lighter and stronger in the areas they need to be. -
In addition to @4x4cheesecake's excellent answer, I'll post up this one. While it focuses on mods for older versions of KSP, it will work just fine for finding mods for the current version too:

I think a better option would be to include 2-3 custom vessel designations, but have like a list of 10-20 different Icons the player could set them too. I have no need for a boat icon, nor a submarine icon. But I really could use a Mothership icon, a Miner Icon, a fuel depot icon, and a few other things. So I could assign my 3 types to the 3 I want, and Cassel could assign his 3 to types of boats, etc. Making the types of icons a mod-able asset would also be nice, so players could just use a simple icon editor to create a new type.

Tracking off option
Gargamel replied to Jack5.exe's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I don't see a reason for that to be a stock option, as it just may confuse newer players.... BUT, i understand it makes for some nicer aesthetics in videos and such. There was a recent thread (last 3 months or so) on this very thing, so if you do a little digging here, you might find it, and in that thread are the MM patches that people wrote to allow players to turn off the sun tracking option. -
@Zeiss Ikon, I was driving home the other day, and I got to thinking, with the recent LIGO discoveries, is it still worth my processor time to be running Einstein@home? Saw in another thread you also run this one. I run SETI@home, and a couple others, plus some number crunching programs I've written that run in the back ground for the past few years, so if E@H is no longer really relevant, I'd like to use my time for something else. For those that don't know, BOINC is basically a screensaver program that crunches numbers for a variety of scientific research projects, using distributed computing power. Their 'flagship' program is/was SETI@home, where you process radio signals received from Aricebo, and look for little green men in the data. They have a number of different programs you can choose from, similar to Zooniverse, but BOINC only runs when you are not using your computer, when it would normally be sitting idle, and automatically, it doesn't require user interaction aside from setting it up.

Lets play KSP, or wel just forget it.
Gargamel replied to PGTART's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
No, never. Been playing for many years and I still don't recognize all the loading screens.
