  1. 15 mainsails and LOTS of fuel all held together with struts. A fair few struts but just struts and decouplers, nothing else. This may be a stupid question but you have added some big red clamps for the first stage?
  2. Now I thought that was due to the 'Big Whack'. It's been moving away from Earth ever since it smashed into us and was formed from the orbiting debris. Something about the size of Mars iirc. This is why the Moon is made up of incredibly similar stuff to our own mantle, because it IS our own mantle.
  3. Distinct lack of lander with "Mun or bust" scrawled on it. YOUR PC HAS BEEN HACKED BY TERRORISTS. RUN, RUN NOW AND MAYBE YOU'LL BE SAFE!
  4. I have a problem with this lovely add-on and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I can get the fairing on no problem but I don't get any extra decoupler stages to break them open. So they stay stuck on and it's strange. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is it a bug or...? Please help.
  5. As a self confessed uber nerd who loves sci-fi, gaming, documentaries on space and many other nerdy past times and interests I have to say... NERDIEST THREAD EVER! Gratz.
  6. OK, so the aerobrake seems to be the best way to reduce fuel requirements, nice. I'd rather not use MechJeb for now as I'm still learning the ropes when it comes to being a decent pilot. The craft I was using had around 8500 m/s delta v according to the engineer redux, so it's obviously my own incompetence that is stopping me, as expected. Must practice this aerobraking witchcraft then I suppose, I have been into the centre of Jool once, that was...weird, so I assume it's slightly tricky to get it just right to slow down a lot without being sucked into the gas giants rather deadly interior? Cheers though, something to practice
  7. Is this a reasonably acceptable way to get to laythe for a landing, or is there a much more efficient way of doing things? 1) Burn to orbit with my version of a gravity turn 2) Use Mun slingshot to escape kerbin SOI 3) Huge burn to get to Jool SOI 4) Burn retro at Jool periap to be captured 5) Burn retro at periap to lower apoap 6) Warp round to new periap and repeat until orbit closes down 7) Use maneuver node to work out burn to be captured by Laythe 8) Repeat 4 and 5 until got roughly circular orbit above Laythe atmosphere 9) Pick landing point with retro burn 10) Land with parachutes Is their something I'm missing or doing stupid wrong? I keep running out of fuel in Laythe orbit. I thought I had enough Delta V, but alas not. I've tried a few designs, (Obviously not very good ones), and can't quite get there. I don't need the perfect approach, (do I?), but any pointers as to ways to save some fuel or improve my approach would be greatly appreciated. Laythe looks so nice, I need to land there or forever be a pathetic creature that no-one shall ever love.
  8. Hmm, I feel I may be having myself one of those after my next payday. Totally brilliant.
  9. If a torus was in an empty space time then there would be no force to act on it which could set it rotating and nothing to use as reference to decide if it was rotating or not. Would you still feel centripetal force sat on the edge of it...debatable, apparently. If you time lapse the night sky you see the whole universe rotating around you. You appear to be the centre of everything. As does anybody anywhere in the universe doing the same thing. A person floating in interplanetary space isn't moving anywhere. Someone comes floating out of the black and whizzes past waving. "They were moving fast" you think, "just as well I'm not moving or we might have collided". The other guy though, he's thinking THE EXACT SAME THING. Not entirely sure where I'm going with this to be honest...I've managed to de-rail myself. Good job me.
  10. My 15 mainsail beast is a pain to get into orbit. Every stage I drop off I'm crossing fingers and hoping they don't collide. It's actually quite tense and fun, but that's just me. Yes my more safe, efficient and weak rockets make for a more...ermm, standard, experience, but flying that 15 mainsail beast is a whole lot of fun and tense times. Go build a huge thing of many, many tanks and see if your ascent is more fun. It is for me.
  11. A tech tree is where you start with simple technology to research, like internal combustion. Then once you research that you can try to work out a jet engine. Once you got those then you can move on to rocket engines. Once they're done then ion engines. once they're done...onwards and onwards where the last tech researched opens up others to BE researched. Like the branches of a tree stemming from one thick branch to ever thinner and thinner branches, or new technologies. Here's one from the awesome 4X game Endless Space:
  12. The Earth rotates and circles the sun. The sun rotates and circles the centre of the galaxy. The galaxy rotates and circles the centre of our local group, (I don't know this, just guessing!), and the local group probably rotates and circles the centre of the cluster or super cluster in which we find ourselves and then that probably rotates and circles around the very centre of the universe in turn. So I guess you should reference all movement in relation to the centre of the universe. We don't actually know where that is though AFAIK, so that's a problem. If you stood still on the Earth's surface then your actual physical path through actual physical space would be all spirally I suppose. Sort of like a flattened stretched out spring which is bent towards a very large circle. Sort of a little bit like this: The speed of light, I suppose, is relative to it's point of origin. All of this should not be taken as fact. In fact, nothing I ever commit to forum should be taken as fact. In fact, nothing anyone ever posts to a forum should be taken blindly as fact. You're welcome for the life lesson
  13. To hit a certain spot on the Mun I got a low almost circular orbit. Pick the point you want to land and then add a maneuver node somewhere before it on your trajectory. Play with the little green and pink nodes and watch where you end up. Make sure you're heading a good bit past your intended point so you have the room to slow down. The pink nodes move you up and down the planet, green forward and back. (My terminology is terrible, sorry). When almost exactly above the right place turn retrograde and burn baby, burn. Halt all horizontal movement. Use the 'set as target' button and then push the pink marker towards the green marker on your descent burn down. I can get within a kilometer or so so far, getting closer with every attempt though.
  14. This: Lands like this: Little rocket pushes it like this: Rover is this: Ends up like this: This was running at around 2 FPS.
  15. "We're all going on a, Munar holidaaaayyyy... No more working for a, year or twooooooo"
  16. I'd love to know Mr. Manley, Is your, "Awesome McCoolname", actually your real name....you know, being Scottish and very manly with rockets and all, it seems too big of a coincidence to my sceptical mind? please say yes....please say yes...please say yes....
  17. I feel like a 4 year old loving his lego who's been allowed to watch daddy at work constructing the world's biggest and best skyscraper... Just awesome. I mean actual awesome, not the over used American version. Wow.
  18. I really hope if we get Cities that they don't all start with the letter 'K'. It's not like every city on Earth starts with an 'E' I'd like something a bit obscure, something relating to their skin tone perhaps, or their five-heads, (juuuussst a little bit bigger than a forehead you see!), or maybe a play on Earth cities. Bicraneum Krashlotopolis Sploshun Krashtymer Khouston Oh dear, that's three with a 'K'....dayum.
  19. Yup, there is air inside the craft. At least there damn well should be. Vibrations pass from the engine through the hull and make noise.
  20. Here's what I did when faced with a very similar design. All stock parts. 1016 Mg. 15 mainsails. 1st stage drops 8. 2nd drops 4. Last one 2. All asparagus staged. Bit of a cow but it lifts anything you like. Then the whole lander becomes the rover/rocket powered buggy to get you where you need to go It's got a little rocket pushing it forwards, retract the legs and away you charge Is this too many pictures for a forum post? Let me know if it is please, thank you. The start of Munbase Monkeh. "We're all going on a Munar holiday.. No more working for a, year or two!" Yes, I am overly proud of my new creation, I apologise, let me know if you want have a look at the .craft file. Good luck.
  21. I've been meaning to do it for a while but just never got round to it. Bullet bit this time though. Feel free to introduce yourself on this thread, we can share if you like
  22. So I've been posting here for the last few weeks yet I was rude enough to never introduce myself. Hello, I call myself Monkeh and I've been playing KSP for the last month or so, maybe 2, where has the time gone? Oh yeah....space. Anyway, it seems we have a lovely community of Kerbal enthusiasts so I thought you may like to see what I've been up to so far. I'm still learning a lot but last night I managed to land close to another one of my landings, so that was very nice. I made a 'Base Builder' rocket with far too many engines, (15 mainsails), that can lift a LOT up to the Mun. I send the first couple of modules for my Munbase Monkeh. The lander is probably the best bit. It lands upright but has a chassis with wheels onto which it topples via a tiny rocket and tank on the top, before running away to meet up with the other Kerbals. I would love your comments and suggestions on how to improve it, thank you. Here's some screenshots from my steam profile for you to peruse and judge me with. My 15 mainsail beast on it's way Landed at the Mun Turn on the mini rocket Retract the legs Down, let's go find our new home Yes, it can use rockets as extra thrust Munbase Monkeh...sweet Second module coming in. I made it close without MechJeb, this makes me proud. Coming in to dock Chillin' in the hitchhiker pod Hope you enjoyed them, speak to you all soon I hope. I also hope you hope I do too.
  23. I made a craft with a rover on for running around on the Mun... I got there in the end though:
  24. It's an interesting point. I mean when in space you just hang there right? Not moving? So jetting off in any direction is easy, right? Right? There's a lot of noted sci-fi authors who have forgotten the orbital mechanics and relative velocities when it comes to space battles, it would just add another level of explanation to a novel though, more lines about having to shed speed or change inclination. Most TV audiences want flashing lasers, explosions and lot's of sci-fi lingo, (tachyon fuel gravity breakers anyone?) and book readers want meaningful characters and exciting set pieces, not a description of a fighter passing a rival at thousands of meters per second and not being able to get a shot off... Physics. Too hard for average Joe to be bothered to think about. lasers...now they're easy to enjoy. Zapp-Zapp-Boom!
  25. Ah well then, in that case I shall leave you with this and bid you a good day. Oh, what about Eve online, that looks spectacular I'm told, Bioshock Infinite is cool, (yeah yeah, probably had it on xbox goddamit!), Hitman: Absolution, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Dead Space 3, (did I call it deep space up there...doh!), Starforge looks like it will be incredible in time or maybe Interstellar Marines which looks pretty cool as well.
