PSA: batteries V.S. fuel cells for general purposes
annallia replied to Jesrad's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Depends on where you are mining, they finally work correctly, the further away from the sun you are the less effective the panels get. -
When I first started playing KSP I had one of those one in a million moments. I was losing control of a very poorly built rocket, I let the boosters go early and managed to get it under control, only to have both boosters come back around and hit the rocket. A very close second for me would be when I bailed out of my command pod (testing eva parachutes... need to find that mod again) opened the chutes just before I hit the ground, survived that, but my pod came down on top of me

The worst thing about watching KSP on YouTube.

My problem is the same as I have with the What did you do in KSP today? thread... You people make nice pretty and functional builds... Mine are functional (sort of) but butt ugly -
Your most successful/least successful missions and what went wrong/right
annallia replied to polan's topic in KSP1 Discussion
In recent memory... I had a doomed mun colony mission. Kinda restarting that one. The first one I had sent several ships into orbit with the pieces, habitat modules, science labs, rovers, power stations, containers full of spare parts for them to build whtever they need, drilling platforms... To be fair I got most of it to the mun, the problem didn't come until it came to man the colony, something went horribly wrong (somehow an engine got staged in the wrong place) causing my rocket with over a dozen kerbals on board to explode in the upper atmosphere. There were issues with getting some of the parts there as well. In the end it bankrupted my space agency and sent my reputation into the toilet. Most successful to me would be an old one, my old Duna mobile kethane refinery. Was 4 huge rovers that roamed Duna mining kethane and converting it to fuel for the supply ships that visit the colony. -
Nope certainly not the first, wont be the last either. At least you didn't do what I usually do on my spaceplanes. When coming in for a landing if I am off course I will turn on my jet engines but rather than use the action group I tend to think I have to stage... and then there goes my chute....

And I am strangely ok with that...

Finally got my rover down to Mun so Bill doesn't have to walk everywhere... And shortly after found a nice flat bit for me to start building my Mun colony so the flag is stuck down as a marker, now just time to start building the colony...

Well, at least NASA would get a good sized boost in funding?

Please explain to me, what all the LV-N hype is about?
annallia replied to Xyphos's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I still find them useful... On my tugs. That is about it really, the odd interplanetary craft as well but it has to be a specific build now not just anything going interplanetary. And honestly the only reason I find them useful on my tugs is I hate docking them to refuel so being able to do that far, far less (and using a mod that gives large LF tanks) they are preferable still to me. -
I started a new career (yesterday). Today I sent a survey probe to Mun, then sent a lander down to scout for nice flat bits to set up base. Unfortunately Bill didn't find anywhere suitable where he was able to get to, will either bribe Val to move the lander or wait till Jeb finishes packing his snacks and delivers the rover. Bill just realized he has to walk the 3.5km home....

What paint program are you using for flags?
annallia replied to ZentroCatson's topic in KSP1 Discussion
FireAlpaca and google... I suck at drawing so don't even bother just find something I like and use Alpaca to resize it. -
If it helps the PC version as Harvester claims I happy. If it doesn't help it but doesn't harm it either I don't care. It's that simple.

I tried something rather new (at least for me). Did not go quite as planned....

We are all murderers - how many Kerbals did you kill?
annallia replied to p8R's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I can't say for certain how many I have killed... When I play with weapon mods like BD Armory I tend to have all vehicles be probe controlled rather than kerbal, so I only lose a kerbal when I get shot down/destroyed by my own defenses. Outside of that I find that I generally keep them alive, with a few exceptions. In just the last few weeks I had a spaceplane explode which killed 3 kerbals (technically only 1 on the plane, the other two died... in other horrible ways). And a catastrophic failure in an attempt to set up a mun base in my career ended up claiming a little over 30 kerbals... -
What mods would make the perfect future "Stock"-KSP for you?
annallia replied to maculator's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
Procedural wings (the B9 ones preferably), Kerbal Flight Data, and while I don't use it anymore (mainly because I forget about it, right up until I try to dock) the docking camera. Some form of KAS would be nice too, not the full shebang with winches and everything, just the ability to link to another vessel without docking. -
The problem with the atomic engine now is bulk
annallia replied to RocketBlam's topic in KSP1 Discussion
This. I played around with procedural tanks a few versions back, honestly I didn't care for it. They were nice to limit part count (a little) but I didn't care for the looks or just the mechanics or what have you. Being able to take all the oxidizer out of a tank and make it a pure LF tank(to the volume it should be) would be exactly what I was expecting when tweakables was announced, and what I am still hoping for. -
What's the most Kerbal thing you've done in real life?
annallia replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I actually see a lot of similar stuff around here... Seen a tricycle (not the little kid ones) with a lawnmower motor mounted on it... Scooters with varied small motors (not sure where they are salvaged from). As for me personally? I used a combination of duct tape and storage crates to keep my car seat upright when it broke. That count? Also used to fire bottle rockets out of a roof hatch where I used to work... Had to be careful not to hit any of the rungs on the latter though or they deflected inside, more than one made it out to the dining room -
They aren't done yet... It isn't like this is going to be the end of PC updates. That being said.. I don't really care if they go to PS4 or not. I don't own a PS4 (or any of the latest gen consols for that matter) so it doesn't matter to me. However, the notion that you will have to use the PS4 controller isn't necessarily true, you can use a USB keyboard/mouse on the PS4 so I don't see playing as being much of an obstacle. Great to hear that Unity 5 is bringing in better than expected results, hope to see it soon so I can finally get a decent framerate when I go over 300ish parts on my potato.

I messed around with KIS to see what my limits were (rather unsatisfied with the results when combined with certain mods, not the fault of KIS though). I also learned that Kerbals apparently don't mind being exposed to the vacuum of space...

Venus surface sample return mission?
annallia replied to Der Anfang's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Wasn't that a Lost in Space episode? -
I attempted to colonize Mun. I put every last penny I had into a rocket (or rather a series of rockets) that would deliver habbitat modules, science labs, and storage so they could build their own power plant, rovers, and mining operations. The final rocket was the crew, 14 of Kerbins finest engineers and scientist, sadly none of them were consulted in the bulding stage of the rocket which lead to somehow the engines in the landing stage firing in the second stage. This lead to a massive explosion in the upper atmosphere and all kerbals are presumed dead. Deciding to press onward, after all you can always hire a few more test subjects later on the habitat and science modules were meant to be docked in space, and then lowered via sky crane to the surface. First attempt to dock the skycrane to the lander worked, but it did knock one of the habitat modules off, no problem right? Well landing didn't go so smooth either. Not being sure if I had enough fuel for a suicide drop I went for a normal(ish) landing. Unfortunately the vessel with landing legs down and turned sideways as it were to kill momentum made it slightly lower than the peak of the mountain it was passing on its way to the landing zone, as a result it was ripped in 3 pieces which tumbled across the Muns surface. So now I am broke, 6 of my 7 pilots are dead. All of my engineers are dead. All but 1 scientist is dead. And I have 2 rockets sitting in orbit full of spare parts to build a base that have no way of surviving the return trip to kerbin (I tried with one of them, their engines in the landing stage just aren't strong enough)
-
I designed a new mun base meant to be landed in one go. I crashed it, redesigned it, crashed it again, redesigned, crashed, redesigned the landing stage, crashed one more time and redesigned one final time before it landed. Not the best view of it, somewhere under all those com arrays is a science lab. Lander module still didn't work properly, came down a little too hard and the rig had a bit of spring in it, knocked one of the engines off, it had a empty capsule on it which was meant to pick up a stranded kerbal before returning but with the missing engine I just got it off the base and let it crash (that bright white bit you see on the terrain not far from the base is what remained.
-
Low on funds I took the easiest contract I could at the time... Rescue some kerbal (I already forget the name) from orbit around Kerbin. On the plus side I did make a decent amount of money from the completion, bad news is it cost roughly 30% more than the advance to get up there so I didn't really make as much as I was hoping to.

Fairings does anyone use them
annallia replied to Nich's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I can honestly say there are only two reasons I use fairings. 1. My build is absurd, they do help with the stability (could be in my head, but I swear its easier to launch the ridiculous contraption with fairings than without). 2. They kinda look purdy. -
Built a new rocket for the mun since I finally unlocked the MPL (just need to nab a few volunteers to run it yet) and landed it on Mun. I took off with my decent stage and achieved orbit at 10.2km (10.1pe/10.3ap if you wana be picky) and it finally ticked... Maybe it just didn't like me the first time?
