Why does this look to me like Gravity 2?
-
I'll only be posting missions here, because posting all the code here will inflate this thread with meaningless stuff. When I post missions, I'll also post a link to the source(s) here. I'll recommend using Git, because its much simpler that way, because I've already set up proposals, mission planning and code folders there. There's more to this than coding, we need trajectories (using KSPTOT, maybe the .pln files from its Mission Architect), .craft files, the whole thing. We'll also need pilots (aka, people who finally take the .craft's and the sources, execute the programs, record the outcome in an imgur album or a video, and then post them here) Currently I do everything (or rather, I don't do anything, because I'm still setting up the install and testing stuff) but hopefully I'll start doing missions soon.

Open Source Space Program Exploring the universe for fun and profit This will be (or at least, I hope this will be) a collaborative Space Program with automated vessels if unmanned, or fly-by-wire systems for manned flights. I won't be doing career mode, as I can't find any tech tree which conforms to what I want to do with this, so this'll be done in Sandbox mode. However, I will be starting small, mostly because I don't know a lot about kOS and I want to keep a realistic progression of flights. Because all this will be open source, anyone can contribute (see github page below) and submit ideas for future missions, improve code for upcoming planned missions and helping plan the trajectories and procedures for upcoming missions (using KSPTOT.) Maybe, together, we can actually learn some kOS. Here are the mods that are almost definitely going to be in: kOS RemoteTech Procedural Fairings NEAR Deadly Re-entry TACLS Procedural Parts - makes the rockets easier to build and keeps the part count low Things we need: A logo, because all space programs must have a spiffy logo Moar contributers Check github for more jobs If you are interested in participating/collaborating with me on this project, hit me up here or on the git: https://github.com/FanaticalFighter/KSP-OSSP Missions Pathfinder 1 - First satellite launch

Well, you can always use DuckDuckGo for searching the internet if you don't want Google collecting stuff on you.

Oh my god I laughed so hard at that I spilled my coffee into my brand new Rubik's Cube. Looks like caffeine is a terrible lubricant. That was brilliant. EDIT: Meh, I've had 216 kb left on my 1TB hdd once.

The Linux Thread!

I haven't really tried using anti-aliasing so far. I'll look into it. -
The Linux Thread!
FanaticalFighter replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
So, apparently, newer open source drivers perform much better than the AMD fglrx drivers, at least for me. I experimented a bit with newer open source drivers and they work quite well. I used the oibaf ppa, which (I think) isn't completely bleeding edge, but is newer than the old ones. I've tested this on a few Ubuntu derivatives, and it worked everytime (tested on 14.04, Linux Mint 17.1, elementaryOS Freya beta 1) If you're having issues with fglrx, try this: Remove your previously installed drivers first. For Ubuntu, you can do this through the systems settings if you installed from there. Otherwise, Google it. Add the newer ppa for the drivers with: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers Update your apt cache: sudo apt-get update Upgrade (install new software, essentially, will upgrade your open source drivers) sudo apt-get upgrade Sal, can you post this in the first page of the thread under AMD drivers? -
BTW, Felbourn, you'll probably wan't to use QuickSearch for your Alexandria install. It allows you to quickly search through all your parts by name. Also, QuickScroll is also really, really useful. Both mods are available here: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/95168-0-90-Malah-s-Quick-mods-Added-QuickContracts-v0-10-2015-01-27

I have a dual boot with Windows 8.1 as the gaming platform and Ubuntu 14.10 for coding, internet etc.

The Linux Thread!
FanaticalFighter replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
So, I decided to use my dual boot with Ubuntu 14.10 for more than just coding and start playing KSP on it, and I have a problem. Everytime I launch the game, no matter what commands I use or what version (x64 or x86) I launch or what mods I use (the full RO package or stock ) the game crashes. What's more, it also freezes up the entire system and I have to use REIBUS (the shortcut to reboot ubuntu) to get out of it. The crash generally happens when the camera turns from the initial menu (which shows a Kerbal hanging out on the Mun) to the crashed Mun or Bust vessel. It always freezes the system, and its impossible to get out of. The sound does keep on playing. I'm running Ubuntu 14.10 with the latest updates, and for drivers I use fglrx-updates from the system settings menu. I'm attaching the last KSP.log here KSP.log: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cwSdqG7KBxlgNlqCN89NXqkSQuO5fbNODhYp_ZPH5vQ/edit?usp=sharing Has anyone faced this issue before? Any ideas? -
So, CrashCourse, a YouTube channel which does mini courses on a lot of stuff, just started a course on Astronomy. And its also hosted by Phil Plait, the "Bad Astronomer." I think loads of people in this community enjoy space, so why not share this here?

Saying KSP is for children is like saying Minecraft's for children, only worse. Anyone can play KSP, they just need to like the try/fail/learn/succeed game loop of KSP.

I've read the book, and I'll go as far as saying that the book is one of the best book that I've ever read. I read the audiobook version (I read loads of audiobooks) and the narration is really good as well. It is a book for nerds, though. I mean, this is a book where a hydrazine's decomposition reaction is a critical plot point. The film looks like its going to be good. At least, Damon should be great for the role of Mark. However, the film casts a Nigerian actor as Indian. Godammit, why? I want my Venkat Kapoor to be Indian. PS: PirateNinjas are the best unit of power consumption ever.

Maxmaps confirmed on reddit that they asked SQUAD whether it was okay to use the KSP music (which is royalty free) in their stream: www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/comments/2ry97z/spacex_livestream_was_playing_ksp_music/cnkhec0

The Indian manned spacecraft
FanaticalFighter replied to xenomorph555's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The rocket is the most Kerbal looking rocket I've seen. Short, squat and with tons of boosters, and follows a weird staging sequence (SRBs first, then liquid engines on the core stage after SRB's are burning out, then the third stage) -
Another Sci-Fi bookwork here . If I had to recommend one book, I'll recommend The Martian, by Andy Weir. Definitely something the KSP crowd will enjoy.

Puzzlingly, I have never read about the shape of the Earth's atmosphere. I mean, if you were to draw a surface on which every point is at the same pressure(say 0.01 Pa), what will it look like? Will it be spherical or bulging as it rotates with the Earth? What will a surface drawn such that all points on it have the same mass density (or molecule desnity) look like? The two surfaces would probably be different, I guess, as pressure varies with both density and temperature, so the day and night side will cause the surfaces to do weird stuff. Does anyone have any idea what this is like? I can't find anything from my short google-fu, and nothing on arxiv either. Most of the research I see is on lower atmosphere wind flows and changes with pressure and temperature as you go up. Ideas?

QUESTION: RSS at Launch of KSP
FanaticalFighter replied to SkyRex94's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
As far as I know, yes, RSS requires that every time. Its not to that hard to bear, especially if you run KSP in windowed mode (just switch to the internet browser for some time on the forums!). Also, if you plan on doing lots of small sessions in a day, just let KSP run. However, we'll have to get NathanKell here for any confirmation on the progress bar. -

AAAND Landing! -
I have a question. Can I have seperate launches to bring kerbals (in Kerbin orbit after Jool trip) back to the ground? I have 11 kerbals going, and attatching return modules to the ship will tremendously increase the weight, so I plan on doing away with return modules, placing the ship in LKO after the trip, and then bringing the kerbals back using an SSTO or something.
