A Thread for Writers to talk about Writing
steuben replied to Mister Dilsby's topic in KSP Fan Works
There are many resources/books available on line as well. many available for free or borrow. I would also check to see if you library has an online books section, mine does. Like I said don't buy them unless you will be writing a number of books set in US high schools. Besides, this wee spot of bother won't last much longer</british accent>. And your folks are right, school work first. Then you can waste time with your friends over at Tosche Station. -

Hit your local library first. It's not worth buying them unless you will be writing a few books about the subject, or getting an advanced degree in US Sociology. Royally schooled: To be greatly educated by someone else on a subject after saying something stupid. Person 1: I think it would be wonderful to have a wonderful sea-side vacation in Paraguay. Person 2: Paraguay is land locked. <Person 2 then proceeds to give fifteen minute lecture on the geography and border history of Paraguay, with the implication that more information can and will be coming.> Colour: extra details that enhance the experience. Basic: Three guys in a room discussing how to decorate it. Colourful version: You have a Canadian, American, and a Brit discussing how to decorate it. The Brit is saying where to put to the couch, how many liters of paint, and how many meters of fabric for the drapes. The Canadian is saying how many gallons of paint, where to put to chesterfield, and how many meters of fabic. The American wants to put the sofa in one spot, have so many gallons of paint, and so many yards of fabric. -

So a fairly stock "Fish out of water" element. But what else you got? The large pieces you will need will be some books on Indonesia culture, history, and education. And some books on US culture, history, and education. Don't go with what you "know" as your basis for background, you can use it for "colour" or plot points but never... well never is a bit strong but will do for now, for what you hang the story on. Like the transfer student gets royally schooled on Indonesian culture and history by some American white bread who hasn't been further abroad than fifty miles from his suburban home. -

*does that joint cracking thing from the classic kung fu movies* Many young grasshopper, many. But you need to clarify a bit more what you will be writing. First what genre and market segment are you writing? Slice of life for the YA crowd? Magical realism for the pop-corn munchers? Cosmic-horror for toddlers? Ultra hard sci-fi for the academic elites? Head over to TvTropes, my usual first suggestion and usual browsing safety protocols apply, and research the common elements for the genre and the market segment. What is the plot? Random events? <- slice of life Portal to magical mystery fun land opens in the lady teacher's washroom, and only he can save both realms? <- comedy or action, and best for a TV series in which he has to go in and out every day. Aliens from Cardiff, but they are illegal aliens since they don't have an education visa and have to hide from local enforcement agencies? <- drama, comedy, or police procedural What is the setting? Nothing major here, just a quick overview. US High school, done... lots British Keystage 4 and 5, done... lots Japanese high school, done... lots Indian high school, done... lots (not that I've seen much of it) Canadian high school, done... not as much and should be done more. Well, you get the point. The reason why it is done so much commercially is that it is an easy, almost cliche, and fairly standardized setting, that is directed towards a very profitable market with easy to write and act plots. You will have to have to work to add something different here. And setting it In! Space!, or Underground!, or They! Fight! Crime!, is only a quarter step. Now if this is your first rodeo, don't let that dissuade you from trying it. Much of what you will learn in trying will serve you well on the next piece that you write. What is your pitch? Then you need to take all of that and crunch it down into about 20, and no more than 30, words. What is your research? Now you need to read. Read as much as you can that is similar and related. The you need to read about writing. As you go along make notes about what worked, what didn't, and what cool thing you'd like to try to work in. What is your plan? Penultimately you need to plan. I have recommended and used the index card method. Now Write! Ultimate step is you need to do one simple thing: write. But remember Sturgeon's Law will apply to what you write. -
Actually yo'll be able to just chink the KSP back straight onto your drive... and rebuild the shortcuts. It reinstall mods, there is a thread here... someplace that explains how to install them. But what you need to do is copy the contents of the gamedata folder, excepting the squad folder over.

After having watched "Wings of Honneamise" for the umpteenth time and marveling at those aircraft, that rocket, and forgetting each time about that whole [spoiler redacted, ed.] set of scenes. I'm gonna ask. Are there any mods that rescale the Kerbol system to real sizes that work with 1.9?Though I'm guessing that if they work with 1.8 they'll work with 1.9. Most of what I'm quickly finding appears to have stalled at 1.4-ish. Either for lack of dev work or by choice.

Yes and no... without a maybe, and depending on what you mean by input, and what you are designing for. An easy to fly plane will hold a near arbitrary orientation and heading with minimal input. For that you want center of mass ahead but not too far ahead of the center of lift. You want a plane that can dance through a corn field without taking an ear off, well for that the CoM and CoL relationship is going to be a bit... off. You're either going to have to keep both hands on the stick or have some nice computer aided flight control. This has been used in RL aircraft, the one that comes to mind is the Avro Arrow. A canuk plane that would have shown those yanks and ruskkies a good what for, if it had made production. You may have to take an iterative approach to the design. Strap on control surfaces, hide some reaction wheels, etc until it does what you want. Then start trimming things away until it fails.

Individual Planets' Soundtracks
steuben replied to RoninFrog's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I've ranted about this before. A proper and well done soundtrack can be a series of Take! My! Money! But, given the amount of time we'd end up spending in and around a given planet any piece of music can wear regardless of how awesome it maybe. It might be a better idea to run in the direction of procedural music generation... and carve a CD from that for the merch opportunities. -
How to Return from Mun/ minums & land near KSC?
steuben replied to Carrot's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Circularize in vLKO (in the 70 to 90 km ASL band) before attempting re-entry. less futzy orbit planning will be required. -

Careful, deep world building can be a very deep rabbit hole to fall down. It can serve to distract you from the task. Tvtropes.org is a good resource as well... but it is a much slippery rabbit hole. To answer the question about how much detail, mention the detail once. And then again only when it is plot critical. As long as the magic is internally consistent it doesn't matter how loose you play with reality, within reason. You'll want to go digging around under the term "Magic Realism." -

Yes, Stan "The Man" Lee is worth listening to. As I say that I wonder what other masters are worth listening too as well. I can think of four names. It might be worth generating a list of names and books. But, at the risk of a mere apprentice of arguing with a past master, it isn't that the greats don't have rules. They do. They have the rules that are drilled into us apprentices from day two. (Day one being this is the end of the pencil you write with, and do it one paper. From both experience, skill, and no little talent, they know these rules reflexively. They also know when and how to break these rules and get away with it. I guess that is why we study them and their works. To try and find that Grand Unified Theory of How to Craft Literature. -
Blend the two together. You are not constrained by the chains of conventional design. If it'll launch and fly it's fair game. Strap few Junos around some rocket fuel tanks and a good old fashioned Reliant. Fill up Jeb's travel mug with something that resembles coffee when you're desperate/ Fly the plane to the location, point it straight up and light the Reliant. It will then be your choice land it there for extra Science!, or fly it home for Max! recovery value. I thought I had a blueprint of my Hopper posted, but I guess not.

Suppositions: 1. There will be establish colony contracts 2. There will be transport colonist contracts 3. The contracts will generate similar to the establish base and station contracts. 4. There will be a new selectable "crew" type colonist 5. Required tech will be late game. Prototype tech will start to appear at roughly level 9, with final and heavy versions at about level 12.

Stuck while lunching game
steuben replied to KingRayCao's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
It won't be your GPU. KSP is relatively old school when it comes to using hardware, for reasons of Math! and Physics!. It just uses the GPU for drawing pixels. Are you using any mods? Define reinstall... - are you reinstalling dirty? Just running the installer over an existing install. - are you uninstalling and then reinstalling? - reinstalling with prejudice? Uninstalling, deleting the KSP folder, and reinstalling? - reinstalling with extreme prejudice? Format the drive, reinstall the os, then KSP. - <basso reverb>"Glazing the platters"</basso reverb>? Running the drive through DoD 5220.22-M data wiping, reinstall the os, then KSP. I don't think you should be going beyond the third option. Did you pull the installation from steam, the website, or somewhere else? -

steuben replied to KingRayCao's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
might be a corrupted file. Resync using Steam, if you went that way, or recopy over the parts folder from the KSP store zip, if you went through the website. -
The Creed: We live on the brown. We fly the blue. We travel the black. We are coming back. Spoken before every mission by the pilots and many of the crew. It is a reminder of who they are, where there are going, and where they will be at the end. The Crest: Worn by those who have flown into space and return. Awarded in gold, and hung in The Hall, to those that didn't.

From my local national film creative type peoples: https://www.nfb.ca/playlist/stopmostudio/?fbclid=IwAR2SGQ5_ucteJzi8AUIwVL_LSdWrURWw14PIuUCwPlVVftL8aMMSWKJN4eA Since KSP seems to lend itself in some degree to stop motion, and tools and techniques are always transferable. -
Moar Boosters! </rabid fanboy voice> With Style</smooth sauve voice> depends, how attached are you to real-life looking rockets? And how much work are you willing to do when you get there? Mods?

Individual nations are in "feelies" category of things. Really nice to have, adds all sorts of background colour to the game, but not essential. Not even really essential feelies. Effort in that category would be by far better focused on expanding the merch line, and developing KSP the plastic model part kits.

help!!plz cant dock with space station
steuben replied to jeb1's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Until I learned how to do it with the nav-ball I wanted a docking camera too. There's several tutorial vids and docs out there on it. -
The simple direction would be to upgrade your video card. I had that problem with the built in video in my comp. I got consist.ent fps of 60, or maybe it was 30, using a ati v4900 and then a geforce 1030. I think there is a way/mod to slow down KSP, but don't quote me on it . You could then record it and speed it up in post-production.
