  1. ^^ THIS! EXACTLY... My whole issue that CKAN is actually, kind of an advanced tool... And all too often its the first thing that new users get told to use, instead of taking 15 mins to learn the basic manual method, FIRST...
  2. NOT to mention the horrible default color/font scheme... If you look at the Invision website (the dev company of the forum software), there IS a LOT of settings that could be used by TPTB, to make a MUCH more user (and eye) friendly color/font theme... Its actually highly customizable... However we have been stuck with the horrible default theme since the forum switch... A HUGE THANK YOU (from me and my ancient, failing eyes), to @n.b.z. for writing a REALLY nice, dark Stylish theme...
  3. Sweet!! Between THIS mod/webapp, and THIS one, they make an awesome combination... The main thing I find lacking, and have been wishing for on the other one, is a 3d representation of the coverage torus... I like how yours also has the polar shadow/ground coverage limit... THANK YOU!!
  4. Wow... This sounds SWEET!!... I have no idea how to use Perl, or command line, so if a GUI of some sort is ever incorporated, I will certainly give this a try... How about finding and listing un-necessary, and non-KSP files? For example, whenever I install mods, I then scrub the GameData folder (for almost everything you've also listed above), but I also scrub for license, read me, COPYING, Thumbs.db, .pdfs, any documentation-only type .txt files, .doc, .md, etc... and I remove them all... I also delete "Flags" folders and files, as I dont use any flags at all... Also, do you check for mod folders nested folders OUTSIDE the \GameData folder, in the main KSP_<install> folder? I ask, because some mods add a <mod-name> top level folder, with a SUB-directory \GameData folder, then the sub folders inside THAT... IIRC, Kerbal Alarm Clock, and some of the TAC mods are examples...
  5. Well, I also have doubts that even if everyone was experiencing it, and HAS been for several versions of the game, that Squad would have addressed or fixed it... They have a pretty bad track record with fixing or addressing non-game breaking bugs... ESPECIALLY if its only a visual bug...
  6. CKAN may be a great tool, HOWEVER, as illustrated in the latest CKAN situation, its not really good advice to suggest CKAN as an alternative to understanding basic manual mod installation... Its SOOOO simple and easy to learn how to do a manual install... If you understand basic folder structure, and how to extract archive files (.zips/.rars), its like a 15 min learning curve and you are done... THIS has been MY biggest issue with CKAN... And, PLEASE, I stated my opinion on CKAN vs a simple manual install AS FAR AS BEGINNING USERS go... Anyone is welcome to counter-point, but I'm done, so please lets not turn this into a CKAN shouting match or flame war...
  7. Here, Here... I also used that tutorial to make my 1st EVER, 3d part, for ANY game... I've since started using Blender (though I'm having issues, and looking for alternatives...Might ven go back to Wings3D)... But, yeah, the tutorial is so well written, most of the techniques carry over to other software, as well...
  8. Nice guide!! ONE little thing, if you dont mind constructive criticism, and if you ever update the guide...(You MAY even already know about this)..But "C:\Program Files\, C:\Program Files (x86), and C:\ProgramData" are not the best places to install KSP to... Anything installed in those folders will need to have administrative rights to run, and since KSP doesnt use a traditional Windows install method using registry keys, this can sometimes cause issues with running KSP... A better example, would be to just make a new folder in the root C: drive, ie "C:\KSP"...
  9. @Deimos Rast Hey, help is ALWAYS appreciated... Even unsolicited help... Sometimes thats the best kind...
  10. Kewl... I did not even know if it was an option on SD, or if you had to re-submit a file for inclusion under a new KSP version...(I know, wouldnt make much sense)... I only had one mod listed on SD, and had not needed to update for a KSP update...
  11. I ran out of "likes", or I would have given you a like...
  12. Hmmm... You show 1.1.3 compat in the thread title, and v0.7.1 as latest vers in the changelog, and thats the same version on SD, dated 5/18, for 1.1.2... Is it possible with SD, to edit the KSP version, and nothing else on an SD mod entry?...
  13. So, I'm relatively new to even using Notepad++, and know NOTHING about Atom... Are there any advantages to using Atom over Notepad++? I DO notice that sometimes the formatting (tabs & spaces) I set in Notepad++ does not seem to always carry over into the .cfg, as I can open it with Notepad, WordPad, or even LibreOffice Writer, and it will not be cleanly formatted the way I had it in Notepad++...
  14. You are HALF-correct... let me fix that for you: "This is misplaced anger, IMO. Sarbian requested metadata describing the mod he maintains be deleted from the CKAN. The concern should still be with the CKAN maintainers, for NOT acceding to these requests from the beginning. "
  15. Hmmm... a more reasonable modder, because he seems to be on "your side"?... And yes, there IS a very good, current, way to verify the version of most mods manually installed: its called .version files, and KSP AVC... The .version files were started, and standardized, by input from the community... It is unfortunate that those who put together CKAN, did not get, or listen to, valuable input from an important segment of the KSP community, during its development... HOWEVER, that seems to now be largely irrelevant, as things seem to be positively working out, from this point on... So can we all please try to focus on the GOOD that has FINALLY come of a lengthy, in-depth, and sometimes heated CKAN discussion? At this point, I think its counter-productive to KEEP POINTING FINGERS, AND REHASHING OLD ARGUMENTS....Obviously, there are people on both "sides" (and I hate that we even have to refer to, or "take sides" in this issue), who will NEVER change their opinions, at least agree to disagree, or at least stop bringing up (hopefully) now irrelevant arguments and accusations, now that things seem to be working out... How about everyone just chill, and see what happens from here on out? I'm sure things are still far from perfect, but at least if they now get better, and both "sides" realise just how much "power" each side wields, hopefully future issues can be worked out without there having to be a "strike"... And those who think the modders who were pushed into this "strike" are uncivilized, immoral, or selfish... Just remember how you all got decent living wages, a 5 day/40 hr work week, vacations, sick/personal time, medical benefits, retirement/pensions, safety standards, etc.... You should all be thankful this seems to be working out VERY quickly, and that one of the most vocal modders on the issue, RoverDude, while he can be a hard-*** sometimes, and firm in his stance, and I know a lot of people dont like his attitude sometimes, if HE can be reasonable, calm, and not hold a grudge, and pledge right up front, that if things change for the better from the CKAN people, even a bit, that he has no problem working with them, and relisting his mods in the future... Then perhaps some people should think about trying to at least moderate their language and tone, before posting any further... EDIT: And before someone nails me for posting about something that JUST got covered, Sorry... It took me quite awhile to write this post, and I see a WHOLE bunch of posts that ninja'd me in the meantime... I said this thread is fast moving, and its hard to keep up, and keep replies current...
  16. Time stamps?... but yeah would be nice to have it log at ALL, whther seperately, OR in the KSP or output logs...
  17. Right... However, i think (I could be wrong), the gist of blacklisting it on the forums, would be to at least prevent the slew & flood of CKAN support requests getting dumped on mod release threads...Which is one of, if not THE biggest issue with modders...
  18. I think you just set your collider to match your part in Unity, whatever the part's orientation is... Your top level, empty GameObject will have the final orientation, for how the part shows up in-game... So you set it for howver you want your part to start out...It doesnt matter that its a surface attach part or not... Neither... Its based on whatever coords you assign to "node_attach = " in the config... I gather "node_attach" is SPECIFICALLY a surface attach point, or node... I dont think you even need a "node_attach" defined in the .cfg if you have srfAttach set to "0" in the attachment rules...
  19. Ok...OK... The thread seems to quickly be devolving, into a two-sided mud slinging fest, re-iterating much of what has been already pointed out and discussed in depth... RoverDude has just posted an update, that "behind-the-scenes" talks seem to be going well... How about everyone else, just step back, and let this thread kool down for a bit... I would hate to see this thread somehow get out of hand, and somehow affect or de-rail the discussion going on else where, that will determine whether this thread will even be relevant any longer... @phoenix_ca Perhaps maybe requesting a temporary lockdown on the thread might be viable at this point? maybe 12hrs...?? 24hrs...???
  20. Why should users get a week or two?.... Modders have been warning of these types of issues, and the possibilities of what could happen, and have been giving the CKAN team over a YEAR to work something out, or to prepare for something of this nature...
  21. :bang-head-on-desk: Of COURSE law is amoral.... Just because I may be within my LEGAL rights to stand across the street from your house, 24/7, and shout "I HATE XXXXXX" at the top of my voice, and make all kinds of other racket (that is whithin the scope of the amoral law), DOES THAT MEAN THAT I SHOULD, and that there will be no consequences other than legal ones, which I would be free and clear of? So while you are standing there spouting the word hypocrisy, dont get upset, that that will be ALL you will be doing, cause you WONT be playing ball, when the modders laugh at your protestations of hypocrisy, and take the ONLY ball home with them...
  22. Very well, I DID get that you implied this, and that I posted an incorrect or irrelevant fact in err, however my argument still stands, as far as I am concerned... It was not so much you, specifically, that I was saying is holding firm to the legality issue... You were just the latest in a long line, and i heatedly tried to re-iterate my stance... And by using an incorrect FACT, it sort of backfired... lol So, No, @soundnfury, NOT taken personally...
  23. AGAIN, does this invalidate my point? It seems there is a large segment of the community that doesnt understand the simple words: JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE EVERY LEGAL RIGHT TO DO SOMETHING.... DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD DO IT.... Everyone keeps pointing out and specifying the letter of licensing law.... THIS WHOLE ARGUMENT, while in part is based on the legalities, the LEGALITIES ARE NOT THE REAL ISSUE HERE.... Modders are NOT denying they have used open licenses and it is with in CKANs right to do what they are doing.... But since CKAN does not seem to want to admit or address there is a MORAL or ETHICAL aspect to what they are doing, THAT is what is turning modders away... And now whether the CKAN team knows it or not, the WHOLE KSP community is about to suffer... Modders are NOT denying CKAN has the right to do what they are doing... However, they are saying if you continue to do what you are doing, and not consider MORAL or ETHICAL aspects, keep practicing your RIGHT to do what you do with mods that allow it thru licensing... But do not be surprised, or take umbrage with modders who have THEIR right to deny CKAN the ability to make their lives harder... Yes, something can be done LEGALLY... However there are still CONSEQUENCES of those actions under the law...
  24. Ok... I am misunderstanding the specifics of the particular license then... Does it invalid my point, though?
