The Linux Thread!
Stone Blue replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
^^ Exactly.... I have had as many as 5 OS's installed at once, with no issues... A mix of Win XP, Win7, Win 8, and Linux... -

Yes...What you would do is either a dual-boot (very easy to do, and completely separates the OS's), OR if its an external USB drive, you just make a one-time change to your BIOS settings, to have the computer boot off the external (Linux) drive first, if it is plugged in...If its not plugged in, the computer would then default right to your primary OS. And why do you not want a dual-boot? The only con i can think of with a dual-boot, would be it takes a couple clicks of user interaction at startup, and the < 30 sec. additional load time due to waiting for user interaction...? Again, you can have a dual-boot setup so it automatically boots to your primary OS just like it always has... Only when you wish to boot into the secondary OS, you would just bring up the boot menu with a single keystroke right after the BIOS loads, then select the secondary OS, and you're done... -
Pretty much what a few others have said: Ignore the hype, stop playing KSP, then spend a month scrambling to update my list of 300 mods I use, and download the most recent version of every mod I have for the CURRENT version of KSP. (I grabbed all the last 0.25 versions for every mod: 5 GB worth!) If I manage to accomplish that BEFORE the new KSP vers. drops, I'll go back to playing the old version of KSP, and wait at least a month or two after the NEW version of KSP dropped, and spend another month NOT playing KSP while I scramble to again update my mod list, and download all the new versions of mods for the new KSP update. THEN, I do not even THINK of anything KSP related for a month or two, because I am so sick of updating mods and doing data entry (I have a large spreadsheet for tracking KSP mods)... So maybe 2-4 months after a new release of KSP drops, I may pick it up and start installing the usual 65-100 mods I use, and start playing KSP again... I may even get in a whole 2 or 3 months of playing KSP, before having to start the cycle all over again...

Daveroski, Thanx for a timely thread... I just decided a couple days ago to try Linux again, JUST for playing KSP. I already have a very streamlined Win 7 dual-boot install on a Win 8.1 laptop, that is ONLY for playing KSP. Its been working well for playing heavily modded KSP, but I've decided I want to be even greedier, and try to stuff even MOAR mods. (I already use 65-100 mods in the Win7 install). Hence, the attempt at Linux. I dabbled in Ubuntu for a few months, a couple years ago, but never got around to re-installing it when I wiped my computer due to requiring a fresh install of Win 8.1. Other than that, I have NO Linux experience. It seems so far, the discussion here has been Linux vs Windows, with some basic comments on which distro of Linux some people are using. I would like my question to focus a little more specifically on which distros people are using and why. I'm looking for a distro that needs to meet only a few requirements: First, intuitive GUI, that makes it easy for a 1st time Linux user to switch from Windows. Second, low memory usage, to maximize KSP gameplay (KSP is the MAIN thing I will be doing) Third, don't need ANY apps, besides those required to: 1) Play KSP 2) Surf the web (Firefox), for surfing the KSP forum and shopping for mod updates 3) Open PDFs and LibreOffice documents, for opening KSP reference materials I have, while playing KSP 4) An easy to use file manager, for organizing my 3-4 KSP install folders, and the 300+ KSP mods I have So you can see, the ONLY thing the Linux install will be for, is playing KSP! I have an i5-2450, 6GB RAM laptop, unfortunately with BOTH Intel HD graphics and an nVidia GT630M GPU. I've been considering Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, and Mint...Also, it seems there are versions of each of those, that use different desktops? ie MATE, GNOME, KDE, Unity?... even MOAR confusion for a Linux noob... So, based on my basic requirements, what say you all? Thanx!

I've been doing a little bit of research on a satellite program I was thinking of trying to make a simple KSP mod for, and I came across this website. I only scratched the surface with the Satellite Missions Database...It also has a nice directory of Airborne (Atmospheric) Sensor programs...There may be even more useful stuff on the site. I dont know if its anything you would want to include, but.... It has an alphabetical directory of TONS of satellite programs. It gives mission profile and objectives, lite flowchart diagrams of sat systems, basic chassis/payload diagrams, launch platforms, etc...Anyway, I though it gives a GREAT summary and overview of specific sat programs/missions, and maybe a good place to start for someone to maybe base some sat mods, and maybe even contract packs on, for Mission Controller 2 or Contract Configurator...Thats what I was thinking of trying, but I dont code OR model...lol Earth Observation Portal (eoPortal) https://directory.eoportal.org/web/eoportal/satellite-missions Here's an example of the James Webb...Just one of HUNDREDS of programs listed: https://directory.eoportal.org/web/eoportal/satellite-missions/j/jwst

MS products suck....Notepad is too simple most of the time, and Wordpad's formatting tools (or the lack there of) suck...And I cant STAND the random 1x, 1.5x, and 2x line spacing... Since I use spreadsheets a lot also, I use LibreOffice's Calc and Writer. LibreOffice is the best all-in-one platform for replacing MS Office products.

Have you taken a look at InfiniteDice's Boat or Submarine Parts, or Holligan's Submarine Parts to see if you can reverse engineer anything from the code or .cfgs? Sorry...Other than that, i got nothing... -

What do I need for successful Orbital Tug ?
Stone Blue replied to Mapoko's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
OK, I dont think I DID remember correctly...You CAN weld most of those parts, but usually not more than one at a time... Right in the OP of that thread: "Known limitations / supported and unsupported mods If you weld together multiple RCS, you will not be able to use the weldment for rotation - the game doesn't allow it. Don't include in your weldment more than one Leg/Light/Solar panel/Science experiment - it is game limitation. The main restriction is not to weld together two identical parts from this list. So for instance, you should not weld two legs together. One leg and one illuminator on the same weldment does not present a problem. Also it is better not to combine together several Docking ports in one weldment. If you weld Engine with integrated Alternator, your weldment always will have Electricity amount equal to 0 even if you have welded a battery to it (Bug/Feature of the game). Multiple Engine with Fairing are not supported by the game. Generally, I suggest not include the engine(s) in your weldment. Crew Hatch: Game allow them only near the CoM of the weldment or hatch will be unusable. Game won't allow several hatches. Winglet/wings/control surfaces/parachutes: they can/must work incorrectly after welding. (It needs more testing)." Seems most of this is due to game limitations, not the mod design itself. You should take a look at the images in the OP. There are even examples of a small RCS tug. Even with the above limitations, you can still cut down part count quite a bit...Just may have to weld small "subassemblies" rather than everything onto the main body in one weldment. -

IIRC, Do NOT use on docking ports, engines, and any parts that animate. -

. Looks like way too much vertical velocity, from the chase plane video... Maybe need to add a ring of these around the top of the stage for these types of "tip-overs"...LOL

Krakenfour, thanx for asking this....I have the same problem with a part that I made. MeCripp, thanx for a helpful answer. -
Weird patent for a weird spacecraft design
Stone Blue replied to RainDreamer's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Hmmm...How can you tell that, when there are no dimension, weight, or mass specifications listed?...How do you know that thing isnt supposed to be 1 mile long on each edge?....Seems to me that would make for (possibly), plenty of room for (human) crew and payload... Perhaps the patent is based off a found ship, similar to the one supposedly described in the Rendlesham Forest incident: "Staff Sgt. Jim Penniston said “black, shiny, triangle-shaped object was 3 meters long by 2 meters high (9.8 feet by 7 feet).â€Â" , And perhaps the crew is only 6 inches tall, which seems to me there might quite a bit of crew space for them... -
That'll work...but it DOES seem to take up quite a bit of space.....

Well, since your question is so broad in range, I suggest a good place to do some digging, instead of waiting for, and wading thru the ton of responses you may get here, would be to check this thread out: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/55401-Community-Mods-and-Plugins-Library

WinkAllKerb, I know this thread is pretty old, but are you still doing anything with these packs?....Any chance I could possibly get a copy of the last release of Kerbal ModeLite Kit? Thanx!

Well, as to the power source, I didnt mean an external source, I guess I should have used "power SUPPLY", instead...Granted with TODAY'S level of technology, things are more compact, but as an example, in the '80s-'90's I worked as an avionics tech in the service...And a basic comm or nav system had specific "modules"...Sometimes all in one box, sometimes in separate units, ie a transmitter, receiver, power supply, display unit...All usually depending on what kind of overall juice was needed for the system...Generally, basic, short range comm systems were basically small packages, while longer range systems required larger "packages"... For example, there was an all-weather, navigational radar system used in KC-130's, that the main component resembled a beer keg, and weighed close to 100lbs...TOTAL system weight may have been close to 200-400lbs... They also had one of the first airborne GPS receivers, and the thing was about 2.5ft x 1.5ft x 1ft, and it also weighed close to 100 lbs...Those did not include the display units, either... Sorry for being longwinded... I guess the point is, if you want to get REALLY detailed, and depending on how close to real life weights you want to get, go ahead and tweak the .cfg specs to your hearts content... I just wanted to point out that there may be more than just with and without antenna weights to consider... And yes, I agree, some of the given antenna part weights ARE still excessively high...
