Mike Huges is at it again; RIP 22 Feb 2020
Kerbart replied to Shpaget's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I’m not 100% sure about his motivations. He might just be looking for attention. Regardless, I agree that “flat earth” is the means to an end, not his motivation or belief. -
Scifi space resources... what are they good for?
Kerbart replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
We cannot allow that to happen! Sandwiches would be outlawed! The end of a delicious snack! #save-the-sandwich -
A UPS/Surge Protector costs less than $100 and safeguards against that, and the frustration of brownouts. In the US, with many neighborhoods having above-ground powerlines running through trees, almost a necessity. About two decades ago I read in German computer magazine C’T a test on UPS’es and it dryly pointed out the curious fact that nearly all brands were from two specific countries. Living in one of them I can attest that their suspicion was at least 50% correct.

Kerbal Maps is back! (sort of)
Kerbart replied to CraigCottingham's topic in KSP1 Tools and Applications
Greatly appreciated! And no rush... life does intervene, after all. -

How does one toggle the legend for the Biome map? -
Is hyperfission an easier goal than fusion?
Kerbart replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
You are way too pessimistic. Five years, top. Possibly three.Within a decade humanity will stop using fossil fuels. The Wright Brothers, Banister running the 4 minute mile, to name two of the most famous examples... once an “impossible” achievement is made, everyone else will be stumbling over each other to make it as well. With something that has the stakes so high, once ITER manages to run successfully, there will be commercial reactors running in a matter of years, I predict. -
Imagine... Aliens are introduced. They always look the same, can be found at the same planetary body, etc. How long before the excitement wears off? “The aliens don’t do anything.” I’m sure Squad will get very limited return on their investment. So now, even more time is spent on writing interactive scripts. It might take two more months before people complain, at the cost of another six months. However... take a look at Astroneer. Plants in a wide variety, some of them aggressive. That is surely something to be added to the game!

Gravity Movie as a KSP MH Mission?
Kerbart replied to Johnster_Space_Program's topic in Making History Missions
Given that the movie was a non-stop violation of Orbital Mechanics, recreating it in KSP would be pretty challenging. -
totm sep 2021 [1.12] Stockalike Station Parts Redux (August 14, 2024)
Kerbart replied to Nertea's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I tried all three sources, and they all stall when unzipping at 96% I agree that it’s unlikely to be a “real” error or others would have complained. I’m using Firefox; I’ll try Edge and different zip software and let you know. Edit: it’s not the browser, but the archiving software. The standard windows archiver had no problem extracting it; one mystery solved. I’ll double check on that. I do have something B9 installed, but perhaps I’m missing one! Edit 2: likely due to what you indicated, using the “full” unzip probably covered missing files in the B9 Part Switch dependency. All looks good now! Thank you for the quick reply. -
totm sep 2021 [1.12] Stockalike Station Parts Redux (August 14, 2024)
Kerbart replied to Nertea's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
First of all, @Nertea and everyone else involved - fantastic work! I encounter a few minor issues -- nothing that prevents the mod from working but I haven't seen them reported either: I can't unzip the file. That may or may not be due to the software used (PowerArchiver) but I haven't encountered such an error anywhere else. Anyway, downloading the zip repository and using the gamedata folder from there fixes that problem (I'm able to extract the dependencies from the zipfile) The docking port shows an extreme amount of z-fighting. Some other parts too, but it's very visible with the docking port -
A Kerbal-worthy monstrosit, and wow, a TI-99... My one suggestion would be to rename it KSP-HOTASABBAKFTSABRSAWWMMANM Controller (Kerbal Space Program - Hands on Throttle and Stick and Button Box and Keyboard) for Flying Through Space, Air and Beyond and Rovering the Surface As Well, With Many More Applications Not Mentioned, Because, if you’re going for a gluttonous abbreviation, why not go all the way?

There, I fixed that for you!

First contact protocol for fictional aliens...
Kerbart replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
"We think they don't want to contact us" (yes I know it's not "real" but art. It's still funny) -
This is why jet turbine output is expressed as thrust, and why prop planes in general have power ratings. Jet thrust remains fairly constant and doesn’t has an “oberth effect” on its power rating — the same engine generates a lot more power at 300 kmh than it does at 100 kmh because of fairly constant thrust at varying velocities, With prop planes it’s exactly the reverse. KSP obviously has a fairly simplistic model for atmospheric flight. I’m not sure we want that fixed, because it will likely be at the expense of frame rates. For the occasional “KSP spin off” game discussions, a high quality atmospheric flight simulator might be a great suggestion. For the game itself—we can now recover crew and craft using helicopters, and use drone-style probes on other planetary bodies that have an atmosphere and that’s more than we dreamt off three months ago.

Finish the storyline in next DLC?
Kerbart replied to nascarlaser1's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I’ve always felt that while Sandbox should be the way it is now, Career—or maybe, more specifically another game mode, Storyline—should have some randommization that requires the development of a space-faring nation: Orbits should be randomized (within boundaries) and Science is needed to get their orbital parameters. Perhaps with some extra observations (new scientific equipment needed!) In similar fashion, atmospheric data should only be known once measured. The game can be a hunt for alien artifacts that each point to the next one. Each of them hidden on a planet/moon (random selected) and requiring special technology that comes with the find—so you cannot stumble onto the final artifact by accident. The final artifact will send a mysterious message into the universe, signalling the aliens 2001 style. It can suggest that Kerbalkind will enter a new phase in its history — an open end or a suggestion for a sequel, The end of the game is clearly just that—the end of the game, not of the story—but it gives the player a set of goals that changes every time and provides goals that some my find missing right now, -
??? Boston Dynamics specializes in autonomous systems, obviously with military applications. The robotics part in BG much more mimic what ABB (Asea Brown Bovery) does, which has much more of a civilian angle and not necessarily defense related (I'm sure there are ABB robots which are used in military applications, but it's not a military contractor (or to-be) like Boston Dynamics). So saying that it's a no-brainer that a spin-off would be military is, at the very least, disputable.

No, we’re not. You’re on page 5, I’m on page 4. I can’t wait for combustion engines with mixture control that have to run leaner at high altitudes.

When you start at 0 and speed up to 100 rpm your station will rotate, so that you will have to stop. once you’re at a constant rate there are two options: 1) your bearings are frictionless. No additional power is required and the whole thing just keeps rotating by itself. There are basically two masses; the space station, and, say, the habitat ring (or whatever rotates) and as there is no interaction between the two, one doesn’t influence the other. Some will argue that this is not a realistic scenario and I tend to agree with that. 2) there is friction in the rotation cuff/bearing system. Let’s for argument sake, put this at a concrete value of x Nm. To make sure your ring doesn’t speed up or slow down, you drive it with a rotor that provides torque in the opposite direction of the friction; so that would be -x Nm. The total amount of torque that is applied to the space station is x - x Nm, or 0. Without a net torque, the station will not rotate. For clarity, in scenario (2) when your turn off the rotor, the ring will slow down due to friction, and this friction will apply torque to the space station and will make it rotate. So you will need SAS or RCS when starting or stopping a habitat ring (or solar panels), to keep the station from spinning (and the SAS system will have to be reset at one point). But in a “stationary” situation (ring spinning at a constant rate) you will not.

In KSP? I haven’t tried it out TBH, but that’s not how it works in reality. Why would the ship counter rotate once a part rotates at a constant rate? Yes, there is torque generated by the rotor, but it’s balanced by the resistance it has to overcome. If it weren’t balanced there wouldn’t be a constant rate of rotation. But I can see how KSP doesn’t model internal friction, and the the vessel would indeed counterrotate. i heard the responsible NASA engineer once explain that it’s a lot easier to keep the solar panels rotating on the dark side, because there’s no need to activate the servos to stabilize the ISS—only when they’re started and stopped. Of course, putting them in “vane mode” lowers atmospheric resistance so it’s not always done like that, but that’s a different story.
-
Only when you start/stop the rotation. Once it’s rotating at a constant speed it’s fine. With model aircraft they point the axis of the propeller slightly sideways.

Oh, from a moral perspective I agree with you 100%, and it’s nice to see Squad not rabidly defending their copyright as some companies do*. The letter of the law is a different story though. Twitch mutes your audio in recordings if copyrighted material is played in the background, regardless of if you’re making money or not. * Copyright, not trademark. Trademark needs to be defended or it’s considered “abandoned.” But I digress.

How to find BG surface features easily [spoiler alert]
Kerbart replied to Foxster's topic in Breaking Ground Discussion
Yeah, it took me like a 10km ride — and then I found three.
