What I hate about KSP forums/IRC! (not a moan, don;t worry!)
Commander Zoom replied to kiwi1960's topic in The Lounge
45 here. Grew up in the post-Apollo years, saw the start and end of the Shuttle, and every few years one of the Voyagers would send us a nice set of picture postcards from one of the gas giants. The Web was "invented" when I was in college, back at the turn of the 90s (when I spent most of my non-class time reading USEnet); I've watched it go from plain black text and images floating in a sea of flat grey, to URLs (and now hashtags) being plastered all over everything. I'm on IRC most nights, still, keeping in touch with friends. I remember the beginning of Eternal September. The first spam. geocities. The horror. -

When will new content for KSP be released?
Commander Zoom replied to MedwedianPresident's topic in KSP1 Discussion
"Stop adding new stuff that's broken or half-working and take some time to fix what's already in the game!" "Okay." "I'm bored, where's the new content?!" -
Or Jeb just got a little carried away in the moment.

zekes: I don't think you're delusional. I think you're very invested. You've put a lot of time and thought into this project, and that deserves to be both acknowledged and preserved. I'm glad that it's going to be archived. However, I fully understand and support the mods' desire to not have to deal with that level of emotional intensity and investment, or the potential fallout (which has, in the past, caused actual problems). It's not what they signed up for - just like I never signed up to be a counselor, father confessor, etc etc when I became the head of another fan community, but found myself in that position anyway, on more than one occasion. It wasn't comfortable for me, I didn't feel qualified, and I was relieved when I stepped down and it wasn't my responsibility anymore. I would not want to be personally responsible for the happiness and self-esteem of the "CEO" and "employees" of a fictional aerospace company, and neither do they, IMO. That's not their job.

Your voice does have meaning... but perhaps not the one you intend. You and everyone else who is speaking out against this change because you are emotionally invested in your sub-community are demonstrating its necessity. They don't want you to be this invested - because it ends up causing problems, for them, for you, for other forum users. I'm proud of some of my accomplishments in this game. I've documented them, been complimented for some of them, and taken what I consider to be prudent steps to preserve and back them up. But if despite all that, I were to lose everything but the memories... it would hurt, but I would go on with my life. Because I have to, and have before, in the face of similar losses (HD crashes, games and forums closing up forever, etc). Nothing lasts forever. In ten years, you may not even be playing anymore, or remember the people who you counted as your best forum buds. In a hundred, you and everyone you know will likely be dead. Understand and accept the ephemerality of experience, and treasure what you have, while you have it. Because it will go away, or be taken from you. To be human, to be mortal, is to experience loss.
I'm just glad that you're holding roleplaying away from we plebeians. We are all too foolish to handle the responsibility that comes with it, so it's fortunate that you're able to step in and intervene before any of us idiots get hurt. After all, it would be awful if people were to play games on a game forum. We might start mistaking fiction from reality if we were to indulge in even the slightest interaction with it. It's why I also prefer not to play Kerbal Space Program - I simply can't trust myself to avoid believing that I am a green man living on Kerbin, and I believe many others like me feel the same way.
If past evidence/incidents were not enough, several recent posts of people freaking out because OMG a piece of their LIFE is going away!!! indicates that yes, some people do and have over-invest(ed) in these activities. One well-known rocket builder has said that he doesn't view this as "pretend" - he's been fully immersed in the role that he was playing, for a few hours a week over several years. That is a burden that a game forum, and the moderators of said forum, were never intended to and should not have to bear. "Harmless" in its current form or not, they simply don't want to have to deal with it, at all, and I don't blame them.
You see this, mods? zekes, a longtime member of the KSP community, has left, all because you think the easiest way to make the KSP forums slightly more compact is to nuke all of RB. SQUAD and the forum overseers will never understand that some people have a real emotional connection to the RB.
I think that this is exactly the sort of thing they're trying to prevent - people getting way too emotionally invested about a forum (that they have to moderate) about a game, and acting out in ways that affect lots of other players. It's not so much about making things compact as in getting rid of stuff that, as we've seen time and again and are seeing right now, people flip the **** out about.

Aqua is saying that it's common for sites to not utilize the full width of the screen/browser window. (Which, if most desktop users do maximize it - as you and I do - is a problem and/or a waste... but I suspect that the site creators are thinking in terms of mobile viewers, not desktop.)

I've caught up with the whole thread, finally, and the post I most wanted to spotlight and respond to was this one from zekes, back on page 22:
Well, for some people it's roleplay. But personally I took it very seriously, I wasn't pretending to be a CEO, I acted like a CEO, Which involved lots of hours put in and decisions to be made. And some places like Kerbal Minds Corp are places that I see unbelievable amounts of community interaction. Basically, we might be okay with closing RB. After all, some of it does occasionally fall into RP. But deleting it entirely? You're erasing history.
I sympathize, but consider this: to some people, the fact that you are so invested in this (ultimately) entirely fictional thing, that you take it so seriously, that you don't consider it pretending but are treating it like it is real... that is unhealthy, and potentially dangerous, and what they want to avoid. KSP is a wonderful game, with a (mostly) great community - but it is not and should not be your life. It was never meant to be. If it is, then I say in all seriousness, seek help.

I admit, I was a little surprised; I didn't think any of the programs had reached the level of being able to send out interplanetary probes (let alone ones capable of soft landing and chemical analysis), or anything at all beyond Kerbin's SOI. Doesn't seem to match up with what we're seeing elsewhere (mostly in the manned, er, kerbaled program). But I suppose they have rather compelling reasons to want an answer to some questions sooner rather than later.

All of this is predicated on the assumption/perception that development is slowing down (for lack of money). IMO, it's not. It's just not fast enough for you. I submit that people have been [s]making this argument[/s] complaining "why isn't it out yet" since we hit double-digit version numbers. Throwing more money at the problem will not solve it. Y'all need to have some frakking patience and accept that "it's out when it's out."

And he said it again just a couple of posts ago:
As for where Kerbfleet goes next--that's already decided. Actually it's been decided for a while. So if you want to spam for a particular location or another, I think there are other threads for that. Or just go there yourselves, I'm not a ****** charter service. :)
Read, people.

IMO, you should all... [first choice of words redacted] ... stop the unhelpful chatter and "demands" and let Kuzzter tell the story(s) he wants to tell. He's done a pretty good job of it so far.

I think it's been made abundantly clear that while Mort may legally be in the right, a victory on his part means nothing less than the (entirely legal) end of the whole kerbaled spaceflight program. Which is against the self-interest of... pretty much everyone in Kerbfleet.

So just a hunch here... In the next chapter, Jeb et al manage somehow to save the whole planet, and his "punishment" is to be busted down to Majer. (And go back to flying missions.)

What is your favorite stock engine?
Commander Zoom replied to Mad Rocket Scientist's topic in KSP1 Discussion
LV-N. If you're leaving Kerbin's SOI, bring at least one. -
I'm totally in favor of KAS/KIS and Pathfinder, as (IMO) they really add to an otherwise stock game. (Of course, I'm an even bigger fan of Texture Replacer, EVE, etc etc, which don't change gameplay at all but make things look much cooler... again, IMO.)

Still no mention of Shepard's Prayer? Tsk.

It occurs to me that you could do a quick-and-dirty fudge of the above by deleting the whole Kerbin system and placing simple craft with the names and orbital elements of Mun and Minmus at the appropriate coordinates - they wouldn't affect other planets or moons, of course, but if you just want to see if they encounter any other SOIs...
