It is 26 gauge enamel coated wire. One reason it spins so fast is because it has neodymium magnets in the two little side holders... four in either slot, stuck together, each about 1cm x 3cm x 5cm.

Transmitting the experiment will decrease its value, processing it (in 0.90, haven't done so in 1.0.2) will increase its value (for transmission, it should still be less than 100%) Recovering your craft will give your the full 100%. I don't think that bar really means much at all.
They overheated when you opened them, or they overheated because you kept accelerating because you didn't shut down your engine? If 1, it's the flight profile or some other factor. If 2, it's your piloting.
