Comet Neowise 2020! [August Hubble photo update]
StrandedonEarth replied to a topic in Science & Spaceflight
Unfortunately, I live in a townhouse complex, where all the garages are flanked by two lights hardwired to be permanently on. It makes stepping outside and viewing faint objects... challenging. No luck so far. I may have to force myself to leave for work early (earlier than 4:15am) to find a dark spot before pre-dawn really gets going. If it's even still visible then. Unfortunately, at this time of year, I'd really like to be asleep before it gets really dark out, so evening viewing is not much of an option.... -
Marriage puts an end to a lot of things..... I used to have a bunch of concert tshirts that never went in the dryer; they were always hung to dry. They lasted a lot longer that way, but still eventually disintegrated

If not, then when they are found, they will probably be hired by one govt or another.

I've been wishing for multi-screen support for years. I've gotten into the argument where I don't care if KSP has clouds, but others seem to think it's a felony that there are none in KSP. This seems to fall into that sort of argument. So one solution (for those who don't want their game bloated by code they don't think they'll use) would be to put these sort of features as DLCs. Want clouds? Buy the Cloudy DLC. Want Multi-monitor? Buy the MMmmm DLC. More planets? There will probably be a DLC for that. Want all the things? Buy the Universal pass, and save 50% off the individual prices!! This sort of thing is right up T2s alley. Now I don't know the numbers; but I know that evolving tech has altered what is typical household standard equipment. Yeah, I'm one of those dinosaurs with a landline. So how many KSP players have multiple monitors? Apparently not many, and not me, not exactly (my kid has started using an old monitor I had kicking around, hooked to his laptop-on-his-desk Minecraft one one screen, Let'sPlay videos on the other). How many play on a laptop? I dunno, but I do. But here is the kicker: in this age of streaming services, how many have a separate TV? A big TV. A wall-mounted TV. For those desktop PCers, is your PC in the same room as your bigscreen TV? Cuz no, I don't have multiple monitors, but I do have a kind-of-big (small compared to the 80-inchers out there) 50" TV on the wall, which I can and do hook to my laptop on occasion (I have a pretty long HDMI cable). If your desktop PC is near the house TV, the same thing can be done, since most PCs have an HDMI-out these days. Because KSP is a space program simulator, after all. And what would be more glorious than running your flight screen on your PC (laptop or desktop) with the map screen visible on that big TV on the wall, just like Mission Control. Because that is our role here: We, the players, ARE Mission Control. So we need it for that reason, if no other! The experts have multi-monitor support, so why shouldn't we?

They probably want to make sure this doesn't meet the same fate as previous tests. At this point StarHopper is still the most successful iteration. -
Comet Neowise 2020! [August Hubble photo update]
StrandedonEarth replied to a topic in Science & Spaceflight
Oh for.... like seriously? I get up for work at 3:30 am, which should have been great to see this thing, but it's been cloudy for, like, ever. Finally, a break in the weather, it's nice and clear when I got up today, and you're telling me it's moved to the evening sky?!?! When I go to bed stupidly early, before it's dark out? -
Comet Neowise 2020! [August Hubble photo update]

Still too many clouds near the horizon at 3:30 this morning. Jupiter has been a fixture in my morning sky for awhile now, but was that Mars I saw high to the south this morning? -
My 3 cents: (2 cents adjusted for inflation): Large multi-engine propeller-driven airliners and especially bombers had the ability to feather the propellers in case the engine quit or was shut down. This prevented the propeller from windmilling the engine, reducing drag and preventing further damage to the engine (which could also damage the airframe). So pitch control was a given.

Spent over two hours trying to get my Laythe lander to land in physics range (and on solid ground) of a stranded Kerbal (rescue contract). Finally got it landed in range, but having trouble figuring out which way to go to reach the lander. Only just now realized I should use map view to get my bearings. Although being near a pole doesn't help. E: Dangit THAT’s what F4 does, toggles the flight scene markers. I wondered where those went, sort of assumed it was an update “feature”

Hale-Bopp back in '97 was quite spectacular, easily visible from cities when at its brightest.Fortunately it was not an extinction-level event. -
It can be addictive, although the last cert levels are grindy. It's early access, so things should improve...

How Overpowered Scifi Space Combat Would Be
StrandedonEarth replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Hmm. Star Trek used AM, although only tiny amounts, and not usually as a weapon (unless that's what the warhead in photon torpedoes was made of, sounds logical). I wonder if the ST:TNG replicators could make antimatter, although it would have to include the magnetic bottle. One tactic I never saw used was to use the transporter to place some AM aboard an enemy ship. But the shields would have to be down first to use the transporter. -
Sorta looks like an eye...

How Overpowered Scifi Space Combat Would Be

Nuclear/AM weapons will produce a shockwave carried by the vaporized bomb casing. Not as effective as with an atmosphere to propagate the blast wave, but it is there.
