Crap. I hate it when I don't notice that there's one more page to go. But it seems great minds think alike. So let's see, the last pic was computer stuff. This guy will take care of that...

Making a rocket to beat all other rockets
StrandedonEarth replied to alpha tech's topic in Science & Spaceflight
If you read the description on that, it says no glue required at all. But I'll excuse you since you say it's late. For Estes rockets, may as well go to the source! Although I think they only ship to the US, I wasn't able to order anything from there to Canada. But I could just ship to a drop box just across the border... http://www.estesrockets.com/002157-saturn-v Anyways, back on topic: If you want to play with rockets, Estes rock(et)s! -
Shuttle lift off if no Gravity

It would experience the same number of gee's, but without gravity the actual acceleration would be increased by 9.81 m/s2 -

Making a rocket to beat all other rockets
StrandedonEarth replied to alpha tech's topic in Science & Spaceflight
My three cents: Many rocket engine nozzles are ablatively cooled, perhaps using cork to line the nozzles would work. I don't know if that would work in the chamber, as it may cause combustion instabilities. Getting stable combustion will be tricky regardless. The German A4/V2 was steered by vanes in the exhaust stream connected to a gyroscope. Maybe cork protection would work there too. Remember the KISS principle: Keep It Simple Stupid! Turbopumps are anything but; pressure-fed is much easier. If you really want to try turbopumps, maybe (big maybe) you can make a car turbocharger work. Building a turbopump from scratch would require an extensive machine shop, and would likely involve several RUDs sending hi-speed shrapnel flying everywhere. Good Luck! I would guesstimate the chances of a small team of amateurs with limited prior knowledge making it to space to be somewhere between slim and none, let alone orbit. I would also think that the odds of someone being seriously injured rise dramatically as the size of the test article increases. I suggest a wall of sand-filled oil drums, and a steel-plate roof against falling debris. And I don't think your house insurance will cover any damages from this activity. Orbital rockets walk a very fine line between strong enough and light enough. I don't think scrapyard metal will have the tensile strength to make orbit. Anything you make out of it that is strong enough to not explode will be pretty heavy. -

KSP Multiplayer
StrandedonEarth replied to Nicknamemk2's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
*disclaimer* I'm a family man, and as such I often have to go AFK suddenly and without warning for an indeterminate period of time. Therefore, I rarely play multiplayer anything, unless it's a local game with friends or my kids (schooling them in Starcraft, for instance). Even when I played MMO's such as SWG or WoW, I generally shied away from group missions. If I ever play another MMO, I may as well call myself "Lone Wolf" That said, with the time warp issues, I can't really see how multiplayer would work in KSP, except as crew members of a single ship. Doing what, only Kraken knows. So what I'd really like to know is, what do people envision actually doing in a multiplayer version of KSP? Combat? Maybe they need to spin off "Kerbal Combat Program," where you get 5-10 minutes to build your fightingcraft and then enter battle on or above whatever planet/moon has been chosen as the arena. What would you do in/with KSP-MP? -
I especially liked seeing the SpaceX logo zooming past the launch tower cam, just like the old Saturn 5's used to

Sounds about right, like my reaction to that buggy driver package.

Yeah, I slept in through the launch and all that, but then I can get up and watch it at my leisure. The technical webcast is already up on youtube, and I agree with the rest, it looks great, especially the landing shots. Here's one: At the point where S2 separates and S1 does its flip maneuver, just before S1 disappears from view behind the S2 engine bell it looks like you can see the S1 engines light up for the boostback burn and S1 appears to accelerate out of view. Here's a question: At S2 separation, how much dV would the S1 have left if a) on its own; or b) it was still attached to S2?

I worked tech support for a computer accessory for a few brief months. I was pretty good with the mechanical issues, but the biggest headache was when the driver package refused to install on certain machines, and there was nothing to be done about it except mail (!?!?!) out the latest driver version, after wasting an hour on all the other steps including downloading the earlier version of drivers. Why the latest drivers weren't available for download, I have no idea. I once had to tell someone who needed the machine to work now to take it back to the store and buy a different brand (that was what I was told by a supervisor). Luckily I was able to find a nice easy manufacturing job after that...

What have you been playing recently? (Other than KSP)
StrandedonEarth replied to a topic in The Lounge
I'm about 260 hours into Civ 6 since Christmas.... I'll probably get back to KSP when 1.3 drops -
Well, Nasa is chipping in hundreds of millions to SpaceX and Boeing to help develop Commercial Crew vehicles. Congress has only approved around half of what has been requested, slowing development.
