Science points beyond tech tree
StrandedonEarth replied to Tantalus's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I agree that there's currently no point in piling up the SP after the tree is done. I do like the idea of spending SP on hi-tech parts like the LV-N and ISRU parts, as well as the Gravioli detector because that thing is an SP cow. Spending SP to level up kerbals (along with the current exp points) makes sense too, but I'd like to see the whole experience/skill thing overhauled as well. It's far too passive, I'd like a proper skill tree with branches and the possibilities of cross-training between the professions. -
Oh geez, fave childhood game? That pretty much boils down to Pong. No wait, I had a ColecoVision, So I'm part of the cartridge generation. I guess Donkey Kong would be one of my fave's, but the arcade version, not the CV version. And I just remembered the arcade game that really grabbed my attention: Hard Driving! Gawd I spent so many quarters in that one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6JC-HCNcio Edit: Hmm, I need to figure out how to embed youtube again. Also, I just remembered Wizardy!

It's that odd green residue they scrape off the launch pad

Hmmm, now how do I plug F9 cores, 5seg SRB's, and SLS cores into KER, to see what gives more dV in the end? -
The only reason I go back to the first menu screen to quit is to see If I can finally see the MunCastle, but I don't even know if it'll even show up when backing out of the game and that's the only time I ever see that Mun scene. I agree it's a bit of a hike back out. Otherwise, from the KSC screen, I just... That reminds me of the good old days playing StarCraft. Some noob would come on BattleNet, and during a game I'd see them typing cheat codes (only good for single-player) into the chat bar. So I'd tell them that they needed to press Alt-F4 to enable cheats in multiplayer. Next I'd see "Dumbass has left the game" . Too bad Blizzard later added a quit confirmation to that trick

Interplanetary transport of unwieldy items
StrandedonEarth replied to glen.mack's topic in KSP1 Discussion
OMG these are just mind-blowingly awesome! I've never seen anything like these. That cavernous docking bay is simply maaaaahvelous. As to the OP: I highly recommend the Throttle Control Avionics mod. A great solution for asymmetric designs. I use designs similar to Vanamonde's, and use TCA when one of a pair undocks. Another trick i learned somewhere on these forums deals with bringing branches back together for greater rigidity and other purposes. Simply place two docking ports facing each other at the branch ends, using the editor gizmos to place them as perfectly as possible. When physics loads, the ports will snap together. Great for making a large ship the core of the rocket on the pad. Having docking ports stage-able makes this even easier. Note: this is just a station, not a tug/mothership -
Avro Arrow! Updated with the tech advances of the last 50 years, of course. Er, wait, never mind

Ok, who put that Arch there? They're just not used to checking for overhead clearance before liftoff -

They were also getting fried by gamma lasers courtesy of the spurt bombs. Now I want to get that book again.- 55 replies

When I was a teenager I always wanted to build a finless model rocket with engines mounted way forward on struts, on the principle that the mass and drag of the payload section below would keep it pointed up. After reading this thread, I recalled that concept and decided to try it in KSP. Bear in mind that this is for low-altitude unguided ballistic trajectories. The first attempt was unsuccessful. Afterwards the testing program switched to un-kerballed vessels with moar struts. Later 2-engine designs were more successful, culminating in a 4-engine design, which flew well despite starting to flip just before burnout. The fuel tank at the bottom was for ballast Overall it worked! Now I'll have to start cutting met..., er, gluing cardboard, because hey, it worked in KSP!

Ok, I can see this getting addicting...

I found a Scientist named Theoory Kerman and just had to hire him

Especially as spare parts get harder to find. I hope the day comes when SpaceX has loads of spare parts from rocket bodies that have flown their limit.

I had a contract for a large Minmus Base, so I came up with a large contraption to fulfill it. Unfortunately I seem to have forgotten something...

I didn't think dual-rotor designs would need a tail boom? Or does firespitter not allow for counter-rotating parts? Meanwhile, I crashed into a crashed vessel...

KSP1 Computer Building/Buying Megathread
StrandedonEarth replied to Leonov's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Ooohhh, the temptation. Is this PC worthwhile? I have the 5500 AirMiles to get it, valued at $550 (USD?) on the HP website, Decisions, decisions... The backstory: My boys have been wanting to buy an XBox One (they have a 360) with all the money they've saved up until Christmas (including gifts). The Boxing Week sales are pushing a $399 deal for a 1TB XB1 with 5 games. After taxes, they have just barely count-out-the-pennies enough, not even enough for a second controller. I've been trying to push them more in the direction of a desktop PC, mostly so they'll leave my laptop alone. I don't see anything that meets my minimum hopes (Core i3/5, 8Gb Ram, usable video) in the budget they have (~$450CDN, barely enough for an XB1 after taxes), It has the bare minimum I'd hope for, although I don't think the graphics are that great. The other problem with that unit is the 180W PSU, which would make it even more difficult to upgrade the graphics with a low-pro card. But what the heck, it's basically free. It sounds like we'll end up with both.... -

... When you're watching the Falcon 9 RTF and landing on live webcast and try to use the arrow keys to rotate the camera angle... -
I mainly used rovers before my precision landing skills improved, for rescue missions. I once drove a rescue rover over 100km across Tylo to rescue a stranded crew. Much patience was required, along with many quicksaves for the inevitable skitter into a roll.

Absolutely Faaaaaaaaaantastic! Congrats to Musk and his hard-working SpaceX team!

First things first: I now have the book reserved at the library.

Pretty cool. I see it's just lifting on repulsorlifts. It'd be great to see it flying on the main engines. Did they fit a hyperdrive on it yet?
