  1. Which was also turned against the Cylons to save the Colonial's bacon. The biggest issue in using FTL in battle is how long it takes to to make the jump from the moment the command is given, which can vary depending on if the FTL is "hot" (ready to jump) or needs to be readied. As for the weaponry, lasers are the best bet, and by the time there are space warships the lasers will probably be in the gigawatt or maybe even terawatt class, which should be able to quickly make gaping holes in things. The only defense (aside from reflecting as much as possible) against something you can't see coming is to be constantly jigging. Kinetic kill is also an option, but instead of single rods or missiles a cloud of ball bearings would be harder to defend against, aside from heavy armor. The worst nightmare of spacefaring nations is someone looping a craft around the moon towards a retrograde orbit at geostationary altitude, then releasing a cloud of ball bearings.. This would wipe out everything in GEO and kick-start a Kessler syndrome at the lower altitudes, basically rendering space inaccessible.
  2. Lol, cool. But as they say on these forums, pics or it didn't happen/doesn't exist! I see your rank is now Dr Kerbal, but I didn't notice what is was before.
  3. The Space excrementstle had ballast in the engine compartment to put the Cg in the right place for landing. Of course, most of the Shuttle was dead weight during launch anyway so it wasn't a big deal. One improvement in Buran was the ability to pump RCS fuel between the fore and aft tanks for Cg control.
  4. Ye Gads, my 'puter choked just loading the pics!
  5. This is an excellent story. You should make a name tag like "Dr KSP" or "Dr Kerbal." Thanks for sharing.
  6. Momentum (mass x velocity) = impulse (force x time). Inertia (an object at in motion tends to remain in motion, an object at rest tends to remain at rest) is basically the same as momentum. What keeps an object in orbit is the horizontal velocity, which makes it miss the object it is constantly falling towards. Orbiting is the simply the art of falling but always missing the ground.
  7. Cheaper launches lowers the risk for prospecting probes. Once Planetary Resources et al find some industrially attractive minerals in accessible orbits there will be a lot of effort going into getting mining equipment on site. Imagine what finding a huge chunk of platinum would do for fuel cell technology and affordability
  8. I wonder how much power they'd have to pour into the hi-gain antenna to get the same paltry bitrate New Horizons gets?
  9. Something about the complexity and difficulty of shutting down the crossfeed while not starving the turbopumps and not getting flames in bad places. I'm sure it can be done (sump tanks?) but at what cost in weight, complexity, and failure modes?
  10. The best place to intercept would be on a (asteroid) surface. At least then there's the possibility of sneaking up on the blind side, although that is easily defended.
  11. "Use of unnecessary violence in the launching of the Kerman Brothers HAS been approved" "We're on a mission from Gene!" Jeb: "It's 12,000 km to the Mun, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of snacks, it's dark... and we're wearing spacesuits." Bill: "Hit it" -The Blues Brothers
  12. "Let's do the Time Warp again!" - RHPS "Kerman. Jeb Kerman" and "Shaken, not exploded" - Jeb Kerman, hero of: Dr Go, From Kerbin With Love, GoldRocket, ThunderBoom. You Only Crash Twice. On Wernher's Secret Service, Orbits are Forever, Launch and Let Land, The Kerbal with the Golden Booster, The Spy who Launched Me, MunRaker, For R&D Only, OctoBooster, Never Say No Fuel Again, A View to a Crash, The Living Munlights, License to Launch, GoldenEngine, Tomorrow Always Flies, Jool Is Not Enough, Crash Another Day, VAB Royale, NERV of Solace, SkyFall, Spacer
  13. I can agree with this. Because sometimes something unexpectedly glorious happens when the recording software isn't running, and you have a snowball's chance on Moho of reproducing it.
  14. Pournelle and Niven's FootFall and Fallen Angels are good near-science reads. Also, while it might be more fictional science than you like Larry Niven's "Known Space" universe of fiction has enthralled me, from World of Ptaavs and Protector and short story collections through the Ringworld and points beyond (the "Fleet of Worlds" series got pretty convoluted). Another enjoyable part of the "Known Space" universe is the collection of "Tales from the Man-Kzin Wars" (which I think would make an awesome TV series), largely written by other authors.
  15. You could also press Esc and "Revert" back to the pad or VAB. It's like the crash never happened. Also, these sort of questions go in the "Gameplay Questions" forum. Welcome to the wonderful worlds of KSP and its forums.
  16. Visited KSC2, courtesy of the Anomaly Surveyor Contract Pack. Trying to get to TMA 2 and TMA 3 in mountainous terrain cost me 3 aircraft, but the crews survived.
  17. I recently started using CKAN and I'll never manage mods any other way again!
  18. I was a little mixed up, I confused PBR with PBY...
  19. Work on reusing the F9's second stage has been shelved to focus on the BFR. Source? Musk said so himself on a reddit AMA.
  20. I have W10 and no complaints. The whole settings thing takes a little getting used to.
