Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
StrandedonEarth replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Pre WW2? Extremely unlikely, to say the least. IIRC it's sand he scooped up on the way, but I would have to rewatch the opening scene to be sure. Such a great movie... -

Apparently Mr Jones didn't think it was really gold, or maybe that it was hollow, or his bag of sand would have been bigger... (Raiders of the Lost Ark, golden idol swap scene) -

As of April 22, Spaceflightnow.com has both Starlink 4-15 and 4-17 launching on May 8 from 39a and SLC-40 at the Cape, times TBD. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out... -
You mean the one (just 1 so far?) on the built stand, covered in a rat's nest? Yeah, didn't notice that one. But the tweet did say "heading to..." so those bells (with lower chamber half?) in the foreground might be the actual flight engines. Then I read the actual twitter thread and, yup! Nice to see progress. Elsewhere in that thread, preumably referring to the qualification engines...

They do, don't they? Maybe it's just a matter of mating the powerhead to the bells...?

Interesting, so it won't make rendezvous until after the close approach. While looking for that flyby speed, I found a 2013 paper on the possibility of a manned visit at that time, but i guess there was no will (or budget) to do that. https://iaaspace.org/wp-content/uploads/iaa/Scientific Activity/conf/pdc2013/IAA-PDC13-04-20.pdf -
Nice find, So many more catchphrases I'd like to see, although I suppose they'd be side-by-side with other ones...

I know converting an F9 stick into an FH stick is not trivial, but it makes me wonder if they could use EOL F9 sticks as side cores (or if it’s possible, a center core) for expendable Heavies, for when they really need every last bit of dV… -

The lid of a sarcophagus is several hundred pounds of solid gold. I don’t think one person should be able to slide it off, at least not without using a lever…. -

Best way to get a thread moved is by "reporting" it yourself (the three dots at upper right of your post). Reporting is not automatically negative, it just gets the moderators attention faster. I've done it myself for my own threads.... It can also be used to nominate threads for "Thread of the Month"

Whats the thread that you check the most often?

You got some nice junk on that trunk, lol. A Tesla at a fuel station would be a rare sight indeed! Had to put gas in the truck the other day. $100 for half a tank... . I'm starting a much closer job soon, I may need to make my wife drive the Yaris and buy an e-bike for my commute, reserving the truck for towing the RV.... I thought jerry cans for diesel were supposed to be yellow, to avoid confusion and/or mistakes.... Good that the carrier took the hit, but you might want to check the hitch receiver mounting for buckling or other damage... Long ago, a friend had an old (70's) Sunfire that got rear-ended hard. The rear bumper and back end actually looked fine, but there was some buckling above the rear wheel wells and the fan was in the radiator!

Okay, I read the articles now, and yeah, seems familiar / similar. Going with the computer analogy, it's fortunate that the most important data seems to be stored in redundant locations, similar to a data center or RAID array. Also, it's a common experience to go into a room to get something and then forget what you went in there for. I read something on this long ago that also used the computer analogy: When you change rooms, your working memory (RAM) dumps the mental map (and the pertinent information of what you want to get) of the room you were in and loads the mental map of the room you enter, not including your errand. Armed with that info, if I run into that problem I just go back into the previous room to reload the info that was erroneously dumped. I find it actually works quite well, instead of standing there trying to puzzle out "what did I come in here for...?" I think this also explains why going when someplace new it looked kind of strange, but not on subsequent visits. I suppose that could be because since it is familiar, your brain isn't trying to absorb so many details, sorting the important details from the trivial ones. At least that was how things seemed to me when I was young... LOL

I didn't read the articles you linked (yet) but I do recall an article I recently read that forgetting things actually can mean more intelligent, as the brain is better at forgetting/ignoring information considered unnecessary (your significant other may have different opinions on what constitues 'unnecessary' information). But I digress... I've concluded that unlocking those buried memories is a matter of triggering the proper neurons. I often find myself using a different word than I mean to (or pressing the wrong button/key when I wanted to press another) which probably means I'm getting old. But I think the mechanism is basically the same. Memories are unlocked when triggering the right neuron, or group of neurons, aka associative memory. Similarly, these mild aphasias I experience (I call it an aphasia; but nothing like the full-blown aphasia Bruce Willis is suffering from. (pause to consult Dr. Google: A little research calls this paraphasia, on a clickbaity site I won't link)) I consider to be a result of the brain addressing a neuron where that memory/word is stored but that particular neuron has died or is no longer functioning properly, so the memory/word "next door" is triggered. I really need to get tested for the earliest warning signs of Alzheimer's, which my mom and grandpa both suffered, and is known to start decades before becoming a full-blown issue...

Or they need to update the testing procedures to ensure the downcomer pressure isn’t too far below the tank pressure, including the pressure at the bottom of the column of liquid in the tank! The Twitterheads are saying it’ll get scrapped. Can they not just replace the downcomer, if the rest of B7 passes inspection? It certainly won’t be the first to fly now though…
