  1. I wonder if the crew was allowed to “sign the soot” this time…
  2. If that’s the case, I’d give it a fail. That said, autonomous semis need to be put on the development fast track. Despite the current driver shortage, one would be a fool to train to be a trucker with autonomy on the horizon. Most truck accidents I’ve seen were caused by a sleepy or inattentive driver drifting into the ditch. Occasionally a driver deliberately ditches to avoid piling into stopped traffic, but that could often also be avoided with proper anticipation aided by modern information systems.
  3. I can’t believe the idiocy of some of the drivers on the road this morning, particularly one semi-truck driver in particular: weaving back and forth in the two lanes available on one stretch of highway, trying to gain a few lengths by using the slow third (climbing) lane at another spot (with the lane ending in 100m), and almost sideswiping SUVs two separate times, almost forcing them off the road. Commercial drivers should be paid by the hour, not the km or mile, so as to not incentivize that sort of idiocy. O/Os should stand to lose their trucks for being that stupid. That company will be getting an email containing some dash cam clips, but with the driver shortage no company can afford to fire a driver. But when autonomous driving goes live, guess who will be first in line when the axe falls? /rant
  4. Probably because SpX developed a working launch vehicle before launching their own netsats, while Amazon is contracting for launches on proto-ware, if not vapourware. If NG was flying I doubt it would be so shocking. I think it’s telling that by also contracting to fly on Ariane 6, it suggests that there may not be enough engines to sustain the flight rate needed with just NG and V-C. Backed up by the fact that ULA will be accelerating the development of SMART engine re-use on Vulcan.
  5. Watch that first step, it's a doozy!
  6. Yeah, I kinda had a feeling that Spaceship Earth was long out of warranty, which means we need to take better care of it… But I haven’t been able to find the maintenance guide , maybe it’s in the Pyramids…
  7. I thought it said: ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS – EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE.
  8. Good call. I only recently installed 1.12 and started playing again after giving up on my 1.8 career probably at least a year ago. But I still haunt these forums on a probably too-regular basis because it’s the best forum around, unpolluted by politics. And since I’ve been on this forum for nine years now (!!) I’ve discussed KSP to death, and rarely visit that subforum.
  9. I like to mount the radial decouplers high, and slide the booster down with the translate gizmo. Make sure the bottom of the booster is below the bottom of the core, and place the struts low on the core. This pushes the top of the booster away so I rarely need separatrons. For extra push-away, use the angled nose cones angled out (less aero-looking" so the aero forces also help push the top of the booster away.
  10. Fireballs rise because of the immense heat inside (hot air rises). So no, you would not get a mushroom cloud going down. The cloud "mushrooms" as it rises because the outside gets cooled by the surrounding atmosphere.
  11. True, but, there's always the unexpected things, like perhaps the weight of the vehicle flexed something a bit too much, or it broke after it was tested, or...
  12. https://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/estelle-harris-obit-costanza-seinfeld-toy-story-1.6406783 E: Gotta share this.... https://i.imgur.com/jeJJWq4.mp4 (link didn't embed; it's Toy Story outtakes)
  13. That mark on Jupiter from Shoemaker-Levy looks a lot like the bruises I got from getting hit by paintballs at close range...
  14. Pretty much what I was going to say, but in a vacuum, you may be underestimating the strength of the blast wave from the vaporized bomb casing. Much less than in atmosphere, but according to the pros, not insignificant. Well, at least not according to Arthur C. Clarke...
  15. COVID time, long line to get into Costco. Restrictions lifted: even longer line at the Costco checkout. That’ll teach me for going on a Saturday
  16. I would tend to agree with that... https://www.ozy.com/good-sht/inside-the-worlds-largest-instrument/76890/
  17. I know the powers that be don't want more options on the like button because it can get negative, but maybe a "sad like" button is appropriate for these situations, because I feel the same way. I don't like "liking" things in the "negative stuff" thread, since it feels like laughing at others' misfortune....
  18. So true. Brake enough going into a corner, and you can get back on the accelerator sooner and come out of the corner faster. It also works in orbital mechanics, slow down to drop into a lower, faster orbit
