  1. I am extremely picky about what I add to my install, and will usually test the mod out in a sandbox game in another folder. If I am satisfied, I will see what parts featured with that mod (if there are any) I really want to bring over. In the case of B9, I think there was 3 pieces I kept. So very rare that I install a 'full' mod. After I know what I want I will make a backup of my real game's folder with the date in the name, then install new mod and continue onwards. At this moment I have about 6 folders for KSP, but I could easily delete 2. I keep them for test purposes. As for deleting the mods, I usually just delete the folders.
  2. Usually, for solidity's sake I try to make my modules as large as humanly (lag-free) possible, and make sure they are properly strutted. Sometime it's not for solidity or for struts, but rater for alignment (you don't want to dock 10times to get that magical alignment with all the pieces). So I will likely Have the center module (in the case of a Cross section type station) feature the North-South axis, then have 2 other launches for the west wing, and the east wing (with solar panels aligned and all of that. You also save lots of time in launches and docking processes doing it in huge chunks. At least that's how I do the big stations. Also I will build the whole thing all linked together in the VAB, then cut it using the sub-assemblies. That way I am SURE everything fits well together, and I don't suddenly find myself not having enough space to slide the middle piece in between the other modules (yes it has happened in the past and it was aggravating. Lesson well learnt).
  3. First I'd like to state that 2 Thrust for them is a little lacking... before when they where at 0,5 I edited the part to make them 5 thrust (Kept same fuel consumption/ratios). I found this was an absolute minimum to keep the game fun and my sanity intact. That being said, I made a "Solar Cruiser" with only 3 ions. Extremely slow to make burns, but I did manage a Jool-5 (no kerbals, only flybys of high/low over each moon/jool) and brought back that science home. I believe that was something like 2k science, but it's been quite a while. I had not unlocked nukes nor the orange tanks yet, but had almost all of the science instruments branch unlocked. I never build anything quite like it afterwards. 5th Horseman tried flying it, but ran out of patience in LKO. I know I took a picture of it at some point over Kerbin, but I cannot seem to find it anymore. If I find it, I shall edit. [EDIT] Better late than never, found it ! Here is my Solar Cruiser in it's 0.23.5/0.24.2 beauty :
  4. Let's see... this is from 0.25 as I never really played 0.90 and waiting for 1.0 B9_Aerospace (4 parts, including my favorite, the truck cockpit M27) BoulderCo (Clouds, but no city lights... Kerbals live underground !) Engineer (Kerbal Engineer) EnvironmentalVisualEnhancements FireSpitter (1 part, a repurposed electrical propeller) IonHybElec_Pack (rebalanced for my end-game motherships) kommit_nucleonics (best 3 Nuclear engines in the game, balanced too !) KOSMOS (3 parts, solar panels) NearFutureSolar (1 part, solar panel) ORIGAMI (2 new dishes) RemoteTech ScienceAlert SurfaceLights (3 parts) I had science containers at some point, but I really wanted to store my science in the large science lab... Since I could not, and didn't get response from mod-designer, I removed it).
  5. Thank you. You learn something everyday !
  6. Must be a US thing... but what does Eisenhower have to do with Ike ? Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of US history, far more than even my own country... But I just don't get that one. Someone enlighten me ?
  7. In a sense, there just needs to be "3-4-5-6 Engine cluster plate" part that you stick onto the bottom of a fuel tank. And then obviously, the engines. I thought about that for a while with the 2 new NASA parts that have respectively 2 and 4 engines.
  8. In a break currently, and urging myself to wait for 1.0, but the urge to play is strong. Don't worry about skills, after killing the main three 2-3 times, I seem to have my mojo back now and they stopped dying. Did I say dying ? I meant having nightmares !
  9. That's why most of us are mostly asking for 3 things : - Optimisation/Bug Fixes - x64 - A something else dear to us (Electric Prop, GP2, additional 'Stock' mods) The game is pretty sturdy, plain fun, and the Replayabilty factor is quite high if you're the kind that loves sandboxes (the generic term, not the type of game in KSP)
  10. I'm actually in the Hype for that one. Almost never fired up 0.90 (or maybe for 1h every now and then, but not often)... so after a well deserved 'break', looking forward to all the new features.
  11. Jool for all it's moons and lots to do there. The infamous Jool-5 is the perfect example. (I hope GP2 will have anything from 3-7 moons, assuming we ever get a GP2) Other than that DUNA. I wish for the terrain to be a bit more... challenging, but it's still interesting (just enough gravity, an atmosphere and the odd mountain/canyon.
  12. You put 500+ as a choice. Mine is about that, 500. Any more and it becomes annoying. I'm willing to go in the 700's to launch something but that is the absolute limit. (Note that I seldom need to now that we have those huge, white Nasa tanks and huge engines)
  13. Nice ship in there. My first launcher to Duna used girders like that. I wasn't expecting it to work (thought the girders would break from the liftoff/acceleration forces). But I made it to Duna with my rover ! Pretty sure your craft is solid... especially since it's well strutted =)
  14. Let's see... 0.24.2 with Clouds, Kerbal Engineer, and many many custom parts from many mods, also trashed parts I never use. (Career) 0.24.2 (x64) install with only Kerbal engineer. (Career) 0.25 install with many, many mods. Like my game keeps crashing and I can't run in x64 so meh (Career) 0.25 install with clouds, Kerbal engineer, and FireSpitter (I made my flying lab from that mod... I so want electric props in game now), Sandbox 0.90 stock / 0.90 x64. Science / Sandbox So I picked 5.
  15. Learning to stage properly was a headache. Learning to get that moon lander to the moon was a headache. Learning how to retrofire and land was a headache. Learning interplanetary transfer was a headache. Learning how to manage dV was INSANELY hard (it all sinked it quickly with kerbal engineer... ) Then learning to dock was... actualy pretty simple as I think about it. Finally, last time I was playing intensively, I learned how to send a je-powered ssto in orbit. I've not bother with sending payloads with it tho as I priorize time instead of efficiency/reusability for launches, and rockests are far faster. Now I am trying to learn to minimize my crafts. Do I really need that orange tank as second stage for my satellite? (no I don't). Can I do that transfer to Jool with a really small craft instead of a huge 700 pats mothership ? (yes I can). So I'm experimenting and changing A LOT of launchers/crafts as I go along. I should be ready when 1.0 hits !
  16. I've done that back in 0.23.5. At the time I didn't even know what mods where, so pure stock. I lifted-off, got into an orbit, set up moon transfer without waiting for optimal transfer (hey I was a newb, sorta). It had 6h50 to go. Left it running and went to see "The Hobbit" with a RL friend. Back from movie+supper, I had bout 2h left on that trip. So I did the mid-course correction and let the game run while I was doing other things... I believe I was coaching my friend how to build his first Mun lander. Got distracted real good and when I came back, I was at something like 50k from the Mun's surface and going down fast. Managed to land with my kerbal surviving, but his ship was 3/4 destroyed (ueah my landings sucked back then as well). So He got out, planted a flag "HEEEELLLPPPP !" and went back into his pod. I rescued him about a month later with my super efficient Apollo-type Mun orbiter/lander. Good thing I didn't have SNACKS! or Life support installed as the poor guy spent 25 in-game years stranded on the Mun. 6 hours might be okay, but you really can't do a mission outside of Kerbin SoI. Even Minmus would be stretching it (I'd install Remote tech just to plan ahead some maneuvers if at work/sleeping. If sleeping I'd raise the volume so it would have a chance to wake me up , haha. Umm might do the Minmus thing with 1.0, again with my Apollo lander (except my orbital/transfer stage's engine is a nuke).
  17. My kerbal equivalent of the Delta II rocket. I already tried this in 0.25 but I could never get the engine fuel flow to expend the way I wanted without manually disabling it for each engine... and it wasn't possible to action-group it. I had gotten the 9 boosters okay tho. The problem is that the small liquid fuel boosters where dumping into the main fuel tank from the get go, and I didn't want that. But if I didn't put a fuel line, I couldn't activate the transfer later. Still with the new aero, it might be worth a re-try. If I cannot make it work, I'll ask 5th Horseman (or the forum) for help =) What's not to like about the Delta-II ?
  18. As long as it remains an OPTION then I agree. I personally love starting 5 stars.
  19. Science. I don't have the patience to grind for the money to unlock what I consider key features of the game. If I really want contracts (as optional), I will start a career, unlock every buildings and throw on top an extra 9.9mil. But most of the time I don't actually bother and stick with science.
  20. I always plan my launches to use the moon for that extra dV saving. However the Kerbol system is so small that I seldom go beyond a moon assist. If the system was 4x the size (new outer planets of relevant distance like our Solar System !) I might plan a Jool gravity assist to save even more dV.
  21. I usually go for looks as much as I can. But when you want to get a low tech-tree flyby of Eeloo, you have to compromise. I guess I'm the same in RL with cars. I could go with the ford escort, it's far more efficient. But barring funds, I'd much more like to go with a Dodge Challenger or a Cadillac ATS 4WD.
  22. 1- Don't understanding how to stage (man that took me forever) 2- Trying to land on moon but keep crashing... Then seeing this 4200isp engine and thinking : that's the power I need, for sure it'll work this time ! 3- Thinking the game is frozen and restarting over and over... you had no electricity you noob. 4- Having an inverted probe core 5- Trying to land in orbital mode and slamming the ground with way to much lateral speed. 6- Quicksaving in atmo before trying an EVA just in case. Dosen't work so Quick-reload... Yeah, no chutes now, so you die and you saved a sec ago, so no matter what you do, everyone will die horrifically every time you reload...
  23. I suck at making aircrafts. I might have posted a really cool "Flying science lab" (thanks to a then working Firespitter) but it like, took me 2 weeks to get it stable enough, and then it still wasn't perfect. I cant seem to be having level planes, I need to point 15-25 degrees to fly level and it's annoying. SSTO as well like shuttles and the like. Never enough fuel, or too many parts to be worthwhile (Why botter when I have my "Hercules" heavy launcher that gets 4x the payload in a third of the time ? ). My only really successful SSTO was my "Laythe Ascender" for my Jool-5... which was an ultralight design with a 1 man pod to bring the science back up (I jettisoned everything, including the Landing gears, haha). I also suck a Aero-Breaking. If I need to do one, it usually requires about 4-10x reloads to get right... I don't trust Aero-Breakings anymore... even the calculator on the web is full of it and I was pure stock. Oh well. Can't be good at everything =)
  24. Watching all these great Youtube videos by Scott Manley, 5th Horseman, Hazard-ish, HOCgaming, LPingwithardvick(sp?), Tyler Raiz, and to some extent Bob Fitch... And realizing: - I could do that... - I betcha he's going to do something like "X" (and he does) - Hadn't thought of that but no problem I can make it with my parts and fly it fine - Why is he doing it that way when way "X" is better ? - Posting suggestions on how to make/drive a rover (last year I was the one desperately seeking advice on these forums/youtube) It is really gratifying watching these videos and realizing you "leveled-up" to a point that you can match the pros no problem. Oh I cannot program/customize my games the way Bob Fitch does it, but just about everything else goes. And also, planning my Jool-5 from plenty of little 3x4 inch notepads sheets while at work, making the ship/assembling it at home then setting off (rule: no resupply, if I am missing something, I make due with it), and then accomplishing the mission no problem on the very first try. That was immensely gratifying and put a broad smile on my face for days.
  25. Was the "EVA Catapulting" fixed in the upcoming 1.0 ? I was playing my new game yesterday (lot's of EVAs for SCIENCE!) and I kept being thrown clear of the craft. If not I kept sliding down the ladder until I "let go" of it. Pretty annoying bugs (not game breaking, but still).
