1. Here are a couple of recent shots. Done with a Samsung S6 held to the eyepiece. Just tried to get lucky and every once in a while did.
2. I have a neighbor that uses that name, too. I did do a double-take the first time I saw it, but of course, the FBI would not be using that name.
3. His username is Heiwaco as in Hey Waco. My honest opinion is that he is just making all of his BS up to draw attention to his site and book. I read about him a few years ago and read through a huge forum thread where he argued to no end about his garbage with many people that were experts, as in engineers and others that actually worked in the space program. He is just trolling and he can't believe in the crap he spouts.
4. He was one of a kind. Great man! The whole town is active with media, people planning events in his honor. There will be a funeral procession later in the week, I will make sure to be there to pay my respects. I sure wish I would have him at some point, but I am proud to have been from the same town.
5. I viewed Mars last weekend and it was the first time I have ever seen any features. Was a great surprise!
6. I found a classic Celestron Super C8 last year on Craigslist for $300. It came with everything but eyepieces. It was about $1400 new in 1981. One heck of a nice scope with great optics and great form mount with drive. For someone new, I would recommend a used, but nice scope without "Go To". Just get one with a drive that will track the sky after being polar aligned. That way, you will learn how to find objects by starhopping and using charts/books. That is something you will not learn using a goto scope. Check the classifieds at Cloudy Nights for used scopes and accessories and to see the market value of used scopes. Most scopes sold today are junk, or are way more expensive that $500. Look for a Dobsonian, SCT, or Newtonian in the 6" to 10" range. Your budget should be large enough to get you some pretty large aperture. Good Luck!
7. I've been a member of VW Vortex since the late 90's. And I think a fishkeeping forum, too. The oldest posts I recall seeing were from the mid 90's.
8. I had lunch at a place right by the bridge about a month ago and could see the VAB to the southeast. It would be a good spot to see a launch.
9. That is a beautiful photo. But you can't see that kind of detail with only your eyes. You can, however see it pretty well with a decent telescope, and the darker the skies, the better. I saw this with my old Meade 8" newt a few weeks ago and was blown away at the detail. I had never seen it so well before.
10. I sim race about 99.9% of the time, but I just bought a new game that a racing friend suggested called Squad (oddly enough). It is fun, but I am terrible at shooters. Assetto Corsa GTR2 KSP Squad
11. Voted. Great job! Will you be doing any more missions? Thanks!!
12. This is great, Ben! Do you have any plans for any other Apollo missions? Thanks
13. Listening now, just a few minutes from touchdown. Fantastic!!
14. If you happen to have an nvidea 600 series GPU or higher, it comes with a good capturing program.
15.
Hi guys, Thanks for the post. I'm the guy behind apollo17.org. It has been a hell of a lot of work and it's great to come across people who have discovered it. I'm excited to say that I'm almost ready to publish v1.0 of the site, in time for the anniversary of the mission (December 6). I'll be sure to post here when it's live. Thanks again, Ben
Thank you, Ben! That is great stuff!
16. About 8-9 years ago, the remnants of a hurricane hit here and knocked the power out to most of the city for over a week. Luckily, the temperature was not too bad. Then the next year, an ice storm paralyzed the city. My power was out for 2 weeks, my fish all died (some were over 10 years old) I haven't wanted to set up the aquarium since then. Had to stay with the inlaws, puke. Basement flooded, etc. Before then, and since, I have never seen the power out for more than 10 minutes in 44 years.
17. I have the same headset, and it has been a disappointment. The range is not very good, I had to RMA the first one because it would not charge. The second one locked up so bad that I had to short-circuit it to make it respond. (thanks to google for that solution) I love their power supplies, but have been very surprised by the headset.
18. You'll poke your eye out. I'd love the Delorean time machine.
19. I actually found Tested because of the book, and I have enjoyed it ever since.
20. I have watched it several times in 20 x 80 binoculars, not really much more to see. It is just too fast. You would need to program a mount to track it to get good results. Check out Thierry LeGault's site for pure awesomeness. http://www.astrophoto.fr/
21. When you pay $130,000 for a car, $10,000 doesn't matter, at all. I would expect every one sold to have the new feature. I rode in a friend's Tesla and it was unbelievably fast!
