OpenGL related fullscreen issue (fixed with -popupwindow)

Recommended Posts

Hi there.

I need information how to OpenGL and fullscreen should work?

Symptoms: -force-opengl added to the shortcut makes my memory issues gone. So finaly can play with all the belowed ones...

BUT as soon as I start this way my "fullscreen" feature is lost.

Either have to play in a "frameless window" Which DO have frame therefore in FullHD It is covering more space my monitor can handle. Therefore I cannot see 10% of the navball. not to mention I cannot open it up in map view.

I do not like the concept of playing in the second available size something like 1700x980 or such.

At full screen I get a bottom left quarter of the screen only. So barely can see the 1/3 of the main menu.

Is that a correctly working method of forcing opengl with a real full screen?

I already tried messing with the launchers confugration capabilities even settings inside the game.

Tried alt+entering back and forth.

I've got almost the latest gaming rig awailable: 780gtx gef 16gb ram, I7 latest proc. latest driver updated with gef experience automatically.

A windows 7 64bit.

Playing on KSP 32bit unfortunatelly as 64 is not supported by the best mods...

I THINK this bug is not a mod related issue, but didn't tested it.

I do write here because I have a heavy modded install. (best, tested, common mods only all v0.90 fully compatible except B9aero)

So think I can not getting official support on this.

And maybe someone has had the same annoying bug and know some workaround. Or just know rendering techniques or windows better than me, and have a solution.

Thank you in advance.

Unity3D seems to have changed their fullscreen behaviour prior to 0.90.0, fullscreen mode does not take over the graphics adapter any more and instead we get a "fullscreen window", this is better when alt+tabbing between Unity3D applications such as KSP and other applications.

You can find the Unity3D command line arguments here by the way.

First tested -popupwindow It seems to work Just have to adjust screen resolution yet.

I didn't know of that is exists. I tried -fullscreen that doesn't worked.

I love you guys :D :D It is perfect.

So solution is -popupwindow.

I wish I've asked that 2 weeks ago :D

Still I'l look into that unity documentation. Maybe I find usefull infos there too.Thank you.

Hello folks.... I've got a lot of mods on my game and are getting a lot of crashes when going from game mode back to space center or when doing other random (memory intense) functions.

So, can this "-popupwindow" command work for me (I'm running Windows 7 64 bit but using 32 bit KSP)?

... and, how do I use it? (Do I add a command line in my startup shortcut?)

Thanks...

yes you just add to your command line after the main link of where it refers to,

example:

"c:/..../..../ksp/ksp.exe" -force-opengl -popupwindow

just add it after the main link and save it and your good to go

This is amazing! I entered the command and ran the game and I'm using at least a Gig less Ram during play. I've gone from crashing to desktop with every other ship screen to space center screen change to actually having to log out and quit the game to stop playing (I had to stop and remember how to do that). I've uninstalled Active Texture Management and the game still runs very clean. There is a slowdown on my frame rate, and it's noticeable when playing with my big orbital constructs, but the game play is much more smooth and I can actually do EVAs around my stations without my game slowing to a crawl.

Thank you very much for this tip, like I said, it's amazing! :D

Most image compression code is not lossless. So compressing textures would reduce the quality in a way that it can not be recovered. This is true of all mepeg/jepeg methods. The more you compress, the less you can restore.

now why would you uninstall ATM? (active texture management) ATM compresses textures for less ram usage... this seems unlogic to me

It did run cleaner with active texture management, but I really didn't like the smudgy graphics. Just a personal preference.

I had an unrelated problem with a corrupted game save, and decided to reload KSP from a clean copy. I went through the mods I'd been using and cleared out ones I wasn't using to save more ram, and ATM was one of those I got rid of.

However, since I like playing with mods, I'll probably reload ATM if/when I start to see any more slow downs or memory issues.

My game starts up with that quarter screen thing.... alt-tabbing fixes it

I was seeing that quarter screen thing too. Using 'alt-enter' keys seems to fix it for me.

  • 2 months later...

When using OpenGL, on my computer the display window seems to be showing in a smaller than full size window. When I press <alt + Enter> it resets my screen back to size and the game runs fine. Give it a try.

Having a PC with two monitors, when I use the OpenGL switch and mouse over change the focus to the non-KSP monitor, the game will flicker pjust once] and it will also flicker when I click on on the KSP monitor [again, changing the focus] ; however when I use the Direct3D switch, I dont get this response.   Did I perhaps miss something or is there a KSP setting that I should check that is causing this flicker?
