People must be crazy to fly in planes without any engine at all :D

Not necessarily. Remember, engines don't make you fly - WINGS make you fly!

But don't worry about me. I'm just a grumpy old glider pilot.

Why do you think I said that?

Though the para people will probably disagree with that one too. Those silly folks think a piece of cloth will do.

At the end of an early NBC News article, they had this Tweet quoted (supposedly from the LA Fire Dept.?):

" *UPDATE: 1233 Rose Ave* 1 small aircraft down on Penmar Golf Course near the Santa Monica airport. Solo occupant, an adult male being...

 LAFD (@LAFD) March 5, 2015"

"Solo" occupant?...."adult male BEING"....??

Hmmmm...Official "lingo", or someone trying to be funny?... lol

The universe is developing some sort of vendetta against Ford. First he breaks his leg filming the new Star Wars, now he crashes a plane. What's next, surviving a nuclear terrorist attack inside a fridge?

this is actually his second crash, he also crashed a helicopter a few years back.

It appears to have actually not been his fault. From what I understand, there was some kind of mechanical failure in the fuel system, causing the engine to go out. He was aiming for a controlled gear-down landing on the fairway, but he encountered another issue with the plane and came in a little too steeply. Given that this is the SECOND mechanical error he's had with this company (or at least, the second crash-causing mechanical error), if I was him, I'd be asking them what kind of maintenance program is going on.

My Grandfather was a pilot in the 80's, he always advised me to never enter a single engine plane.

That should go together with the advice that if you fly a multi-engine plane it should be able to fly with one engine down. Otherwise you're just multiplying the chance of engine trouble.

It's not like this hasn't happened to him in space, but then engine failures are a bit different there.

The aircraft ended up on the only area of open terrain nearby, the pilot survived, and the wreckage still looks like an airplane.

Considering what could have happened, I'd say he did alright.
