Problem with this crossword is that there seem to be multiple valid solutions and no real way of determining which is the "official" answer.

Take 19 across for instance. There are a lot of Russian cosmonauts with 6-letter surnames ending with V. I count at least Ivanov, Leonov, and Volkov. Any of those could be right - and that's assuming it's people not missions.

When there's more than one valid solution and no other hints provided, it doesn't exactly make for a solvable puzzle.

I've got 16 down as being Glenn, which could make 19 across Leonov, and that could make 15 down Eisele.

LOL, well now that I think about it, I can't think of one you could tie to the countdown and some kind of space reference either.

ALSO to mention if 12v Guidoni then there is no russian surname ending on d...

I think it's all people; started looking at missions, but couldn't get many that fit.

3A: Carpenter

3D: Cristoforetti

4D: Atkov

7A: Armstrong

7D: Aldrin

8D: Shepherd (Shepard after the fix)

9D: Ride

10A: Lu

11A: Hadfield

12D: Guidoni

15D: Eisele

19A: Leonov

My only problem - I can't see any 4-letter cosmonauts for 2D except Volk, which wouldn't fit with Armstrong for 7A.

14 down could be Wetherbee? That would make 21 across either Belyayev or Nelyubov, but either could be used in this case.

There are so many missions, so many probes, subprobes, rovers etc... there should be enough

Here's mine so far. I know we were thinking Glenn for 16D, but I can't corroborate with a 16A. For 2D I didn't think any Russian in history ever had a name as short as four letters I even checked the dogs and didn't come up with a match.

That makes 5A Mukai (Mukai Chiaki, first Japanese woman in space), as Kanai is only an Astronaut candidate, and has not flown yet.

Is 2d even Russian? Dawn would fit there perfectly.

I think 2D is Jahn - a German national who was part of the USSR Interkosmos program.

And 20A must be either Wang or Yang, although there's no way to determine which Kasper was actually thinking of.

That likely makes 18D Revin.

12d is supposed to be from ESA - and there are no ESA astronauts with a name starting by G long enough

Which leaves only Galileo - ESA's in progress GPS satellite constellation.

12 vertical could not be Gagarin... it should be related to ESA: Galileo
