I finally made it to Duna!! :D

Recommended Posts

So, after alot of googling, I launched a probe to orbit Duna for practice in interplanetary transfers, and it worked great! I went from LKO to Duna Prograde orbit(I'll explain later) on two tanks of jet fuel, although I took 6 with me. :P The one thing I messed up was coming in on the wrong side of Duna and doing a clockwise orbit, so I burned prograde and used a gravity assist with Ike to get a high elliptical orbit, and at my Apoapsis, reversed my orbit, and I still haven't had to jettison my first two drop tanks! :D Here's the Imgur album, I find that linking it is more clean and organized to look at than the way embedding is now. If you're that lazy, I can embed it, but for now, I'll just link it.

Also, I forgot to add Titles and descriptions and crap... oops.

I'm working on landing a rover too, I'll post again here just to let you know, and probably post a new main thread for it. :D

Big congrats! The step from popping out to the Mun and Minmus all the way to interplanetary travel is less a 'step' and more a 'flinging yourself off a massive precipice while strapped to a cheap kite' sort of experience. That first ejection burn is a trip. The first real view of another world. I still remember repeatedly re-working my deceleration burn and approach for aerobreak to Duna. Was SO uncertain. I nearly flung myself face first into Ike on the approach too. Snuggling into a celestial body at just shy of mach 9, while awesome in concept, is a poor choice for serious exploration.

Your first landing on Eve, your first visit to Jool and your first visit to Eeloo are all pretty incredible. Moho is its own sort of fun challenge and every facet of KSP has a particular flavor of cool but your first Duna visit and that short list, those are the ones that at least for me really defined what makes KSP so incredible to me.

That first step really is the hardest. All due props for getting there! Sounds like you went the 'overkill' route. Smart way to do it.

Congrats on your 1st interplanetary success! It's quite a feeling of accomplishment, ain't it? Have a drink on me :).

Eventually, you'll reach a point where setting up and executing the trip become routine, but I hope you'll always retain the sense of accomplishment and also some wonder, no matter how often you've been there already. The Kraken helps with this, meaning there are never any guarantees no matter how adept you become at flying rockets. For this reason, I hope the Kraken never entirely goes away :D.

Too many replies to quote, but thank you so much for the tips and Congrats. Also, MalfunctionM1ke, I usually go by Slab, but thank you! Also, thanks for all the rep, I'm kinda new to the forums so this is exciting for me. XD Also, Vanamonde, thanks for moving it, I wasn't sure where to post.
