Kerbin Circumnavigation 1.0.4/1.0.5 - Aviator Challenge Continuation

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this qualifies as 10 or 9 times around Kerbin since the terrain moved a full orbit. Sunrise was seen 10 times though, which is more than enough.

After multiple test flights I settled for the slimmest wings and realized that however many radiators you stick in a cargo bay, they wont cool the poor kerbal sitting inside.

So I went with the mk1 command pod and loads of fuel.

Props to zolotiyeruki for "inspiration" and godspeed to whoever plans to beat this. [Craft download]

It doesn't actually matter how many time you orbited relative to the terrain. It matters on the actual distance you travel, or what you put in your report.

I can pass this. Just don't land it anywhere near me. Don't want to be arrested for owning a weapons of mass destruction.

Nice! Your flight was a bit over 6 hours. If you're averaging 40 minutes per circle (and that's about right, given your speed), that's 9 times around.

And yes, I can sympathize with the difficulty landing. That narrow track on the landing gear is a beast.

One full circumnavigation (just) at a boringly low speed. Time to make something much speedier

45.6K dV and off we go http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/648876990489061911/45100E47B01C9FEE9561A73783B299044AB3DCE1/

2.5K dV left - cut that a bit fine: http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/648877323448634855/7C6D207A2DCFB96F2C8D087C740FB0FA6B0CAE11/

Why is my f3 showing my correct total flight time and not my correct distance traveled? It seems to be tagging from my approach quicksave... http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/648877323448633796/430983C82B65B6B8B3ADF631AEE7824E9F7CBDE7/

Firstly, it looks like we have another person here who has done an all basic circumnavigation! Congrats! (That's actually a decent time for a basic jet circumnavigation)

Secondly, I will have to say that you are missing a picture. You need one from halfway around Kerbin to qualify. I believe you based on your time and fuel load, but there is still too little proof.

Thirdly, the F3 screen seems to only take from the last time you quick-loaded rather than from the whole flight. This is solvable by taking a picture of the F3 screen every time you quick-save (Yes, I had to go through that process as well), and then picking out the F3 photos from the points you quick-loaded from. Add them all up, and you get your total statistics. Yes, I did have to do this for one of my circumnavigations.

It is true that you forgot an image to make a proper submission, so you get your free pass since this is your first mistake.

But hey, making a whole circle on basics is always a chore.

Well, everything else checks out, so nothing left to do but put you on the board.

silks, I can't let this stand. I want that crown back! :P If all goes well, I launch something tonight, and get a good night's sleep before landing it. :)

No punching each other. Friendly competition only [Just kidding. Go John Cena this guy]

Ah well, bugger, I should read rules first :) Oh well, gives me a reason to make a faster rig.

I do have one from about midway around, now that I look - http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/648876990489063291/BE2E52B77C21D8C98BBD8B20BB62291109B18D61/ you can see my distance to KSP and the second sunrise

It's a challenge, not a competition, right? Oh, wait, we have guys trying to shave seconds off their one-time-around time. :D Nah, no hard feelings--I'm happy to have provided a springboard to someone else.

I had to google John Cena to figure out what you were talking about, lol.

I am really frustrated right now. I've come up with a craft capable of cruinsing at 1740 but the MET automatically starts during loading. If I'm really fast, I can get ignition at t+1 or 2 seconds but my previous velocity contenders would not start ticking the MET until my first stage activation (and it's happening with and without launch clamps). Then, up in the air, I'm running into a strange heating glitch where I have to yaw back and forth to preserve the fuel tanks serving as outboard engine nacelles. If I don't, they'll explode about 8 minutes in. But when I do, the temp goes from bright red, almost dead to brownish-green and flickers for a few seconds, then stabilizes at the lower temp.

With these problems, I'm within a second of my personal best. But if everything were working correctly, I think I might be in the running for the top seat again. =\

Another day, another boring imgur album. Yeah, I thought 7 times around was a bit crazy, and 8 was ridiculous. How about 12?

Just over 8 hours of flight time.

BTW, I've never tried this, but would a Kerbonaut stay in a Command Seat at mach 5 and 27km altitude?

Yay! 1.0.5 is out! Time to be the first to do this challenge using just .625 meter jets! I'll be livestreaming in a few minutes.

EDIT: Going live pretty much right now. Click here to join me as I figure out 1.0.5 and then proceed to circumnavigate Kerbin on the new tiny jet engines for the first time.

EDIT: The stream has finished, and I have succeeded. I'll upload a couple pictures right now, and I'll get to the full entry submission later.

Also, apparently you can just wish for planes on other people's computers to suddenly crash and actually have them crash.

These new parts are a lot of fun. I want to see a tiny personal jet like the one Scott Manley was playing with in his 1.0.5 first look videos. Too bad it can't be flown without ditching from a host craft.
Could you "launch" the pilotless craft, then launch a second craft (consisting of only a pod), have the kerbonaut climb out and walk over to the mini plane, and fly the mini plane? Would that be kosher?

They said I was mad... They shouldn't have doubted themselves. I unveil my latest prototype, the Goliath... junior!

TIL: high bypass turbfans lose thrust quickly over 10000m and (along with command seats and airplane tails used as wings) rapidly lose the ability to exist past about 300 m/s.

So, I need a few slight adjustments of parts to improve the notexplodability of the design, and roughly double or maybe triple the fuel load. Not a problem, I say.

FWIW, it actually handles pretty well and is really fun to fly.
