I have a similar setup except my processor is quad core at 4.5Ghz. The amount of cores doesn't matter, it's the throughput since ksp's physics are run on a single thread. I've run over 50 mods at once with 1000+ part ships with no problems and never crashes thanks to the Linux version. 7-800 part ships have no noticeable lag.

One big mod, or five little mods. It would be more, except for this very relevant and underpowered part of your system specs:

Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000, Keyboard & Mouse, Black, 2.4 GHz RF Wireless, USB, Retail

Z506 5.1 Surround Speaker System, 75W RMS (4x8W + 16W + 27W), Black, Retail

I have a beast build with an AMD Phenom II X4 945 @2.99 GHz and AMD Radeon HD 5450 and I get 60 FPS in the tracking station in a brand new save and get no lag at all with a 50 part ship. The game also runs at a blazing fast 10 FPS when flying at Kerbin at max settings with a 1 part ship. Beat that.

Which "ultimate gaming PC" builder-store is offering this, and at how many thousands of dollars of markup over assembling yourself?

FWIW while this would obviously get somewhat better FPS than most, I'd bet money it still pulls single digits on gigantic stations or debris fields. Presumably it would run exactly as many mods as any other PC with more than adequate hardware. I don't think KSP utilizes three GPUs effectively or puts an octocore to any real strain despite being CPU bound.

I was just working on a custom system and decided to go with the max... this setup is $18,833.87 not including tax and shipping :)

/facepalm

I hope you're joking. You can build a monster PC yourself for a small fraction of that price by putting it together yourself and not going overboard with useless spec parts. It's like buying the fastest car on the road, in north America, where the speed limits are 1/5 of what the car can do. What's the point?

oh no, i'd love to spend $19k on a stupid fast computer when i could spend it on a new car......

ha, i'm working on a much cheaper system for KSP in the $800-$1000 range

On a more realistic note... I think this configuration is more practical and should work great for KSP x64, yeah?
