CrisK
- - - Updated - - -Whatever you like, but put it on its own thread.Darn, looks like I'll have to censor local newspapers. The people cannot learn of this defeat!
SpaceplaneAddict
Never mind, I need to pull the K-14 out until further notice.
Hodo
I really need to work on a new design. Hmmm... maybe tonight.
SpaceplaneAddict
TWR is apperently 3.22 for ymy K-14.
Magnavox
I created a new install to try and test my Sper Slaber with weapons. Unfortunately when I fly two of them against each other, they tend to disintegrate in high G turns. Will increasing wing strength help with that? Adding more struts doesn't seem to help. Doke
Sad to see the chibi Flanker go down. That Shingo is a tough customer -- but not tough enough for my K-3B 'Arctic Skua'. Leaner, meaner, less likely to randomly explode:https://www.dropbox.com/s/qm4zgfnlpmo8wdz/K-3B1%20Arctic%20Skua.craft?dl=
SpaceplaneAddict
GREAT NEWS! The K-14 is turning so well, it doesn't need airbrakes! I added one anyway.

Doke
That one quick burst was pretty impressive. I really can't work out the gunnery AI; sometimes it makes really clean shots like that, sometimes it sprays everywhere, sometimes it misses really obvious deflection shots and then takes an improbable potshot. SpaceplaneAddict
Ooh, aero failure. Shame. Now let's see that Arctic Skua. And BTW, I have a suggestion as to how you can run the tourney. If there are multiple challengers before you can record them, why not fight the challengers against each other, then fight the winner against the champion? TrainEngie
That Sukhoi is so supermaneuverable, it supermaneuvered itself to death. Awkward...

Dwerto
I thought I might as well enter this into the competition:here is the d-8: https://www.dropbox.com/s/nxp2me986tg3v0r/d-8.craft?dl=0All the control surfaces should be set so that dynamic deflection does basically nothing. Hodo
A small but important part of the airframe was shot away just before the spinout. It was a hell of a shot.I think it is interesting that both single engine and twin engine aircraft have all done well in this challenge. It is actually quite exciting to watch and see how the designs are using different theories and yet still showing that they are each VERY combat capable aircraft. Turning performance looked awfulPrototype. It'll happily hold ridiculous AoAs, but it slows down so much that it ends up standing still. Good in a dogfight, hopeless against missiles. SpaceplaneAddict
Kewl. Can ye test ze K-35? It was weeks in dev. Secret even to my highest associates.- - - Updated - - -Uh, BTW, I was tinkering around with your MiK 6 yesterday. You could get immense turning performance if you increase elevator deflection by just a degree or two. Besides, you have so much AoA stuff, it would be no problem for your MiK to handle the increased turning speed.
CrisK
A small but important part of the airframe was shot away just before the spinout. I'm surprised that a semi-realistic plane was able to compete with the shingo. I think that a large delta wing design is the best way to go if you're building an AI drone. From the video we can see that missiles are functionally useless on any plane that can fly faster than Mach 0.5 and make reasonably good turns. The best way to optimize for the AI is to create a very pitch-stable design so that there are opportunities for the AI to use the gun.

The missiles bleed off to much energy in turns. But in reality missiles are often defeated by a good sharp turn into them forcing them to burn off energy. It wasn't until later design A2A missiles came about, like the AIM-9X and the Russian thrust vectoring missile came about.

I modified the BDArmory config files on my own install so that missiles act more realistically.Given that both fighters were within 2km of each other and they both fired 4+ missiles of various homing types, both should have been destroyed.
