What's the "stupidest" fun you've had in KSP?

Building tiny flyable contraptions powered by the Juno engine introduced by 1.0.5.

I had almost completely ignored the SPH and runway with all previous versions. Somehow the fun of contructing and flying anything inside the atmosphere, instead of lobbing things out of it, just did not dawn on me before. When 1.0.5 came out, I set up a new install, and after a few test runs with my usual monster rockets, my eye fell on the new Juno jet engine. I know, one of the least powerful engines in the game managed to get me interested in building and flying atmosperic-only ships.

I've since built the tiniest flyable crap that I never even considered before. Along the way I learned a lot about the new aero model, drag, lift, what makes a ship flyable (or not)... and just generally had a load of insane fun testing the limits of the game physics.

Some examples of my stupid fun documented for general amusement :P (pic heavy)

Spoiler

Tiny bomber jets and biplanes:

Going where no Kerbal has gone before:

Slightly bigger bomber jets:

Pod racers:

A whole line of TIE fighters:

Oh and trying for speed records with tiny boats:

I can't even explain why it's so much fun to me. But it has kept me strangely entertained in stock 1.0.5 while eagerly awaiting what the arrival of 1.1 brings in the ways of stupid fun :D. (something tells me 1.1 will reintroduce me to crazily modded KSP again...)

Very untypical for Jeb, he's usually having even more fun than I am, even when he really shouldn't be...

This!

I'm not an airplane guy at all, and prior to 1.0.5 did almost nothing with airplanes.  But I gotta say, I just adore the Juno.  It's the biggest hole in KSP that I never knew was there until they filled it.  Building little planes with the Juno is just fun!

Part of its appeal is that it's so low-tech that you get it pretty much for free, even if you're focusing on the rocket part of the tech tree rather than aero, so that encourages a lot of goofing around with it.

Just love that little thing.

Trying to see how high I can get on Kerbin (Demo) with just RCS (lots of them), Mono, Probe core, battery Reaction wheel, and a few module segments. (I think I've gotten 2-3 km) And making a rover with Probe cores, batteries, and reaction wheels :)

Back before 1.0, when physicsless parts were genuinely massless, I tried taking the big monpropellant tank and spamming dozens and dozens of the (then-massless) linear RCS thrusters on its underside.

It had a TWR of about 5 sitting on the launchpad, increasing to nearly 50 as it became nearly empty.

Slammed into the air and got really spectacular (and, pre-1.0, harmless) fireworks before heading off into space.

Should have done that at Gilly.

oh man, where do I start!

Rover Launcher 1.0:
(i.e. a plane with a rover attached upside-down to the roof)

2013-10-23_00034%20%28Custom%29.jpg

So you had to drop the rover off upside down and at less than 50m/s or so, so the wheels didn't break.

2013-10-23_00036%20%28Custom%29.jpg

It morphed into a boat version (this was in January 2014!) which actually worked pretty well.

Springy Launch Thing
errr...

Aircraft Carrier:
This actually floated fine...

2014-02-21_00114%20%28Custom%29.jpg

but was hard to land on...

2014-02-21_00052%20%28Custom%29.jpg

Pole Base Alpha transport
This is the worst solution to a problem that I shouldn't have thought up!

Most of my Stupidity is based on building really oversized rockets an getting as many engines as possible in the first stage .

screenshot2.png

Only 81 on this one

screenshot6.png

227 on this one though

vlcsnap-2016-01-09-17h10m26s641.png

Tweakscaling a set of rockets does add a new dimesion in this case the G meter almost broke

screenshot1.png

Finally.......................

screenshot13.png

it got to a very silly height

screenshot14_1.png

Was also fun making it go in circles very very fast Bob , Bill an Val wern't amused though...........

This is the best design I have ever seen for getting a rover to where I need it.... and by best, I mean "most kerbal" and "least likely to work on the first try". Also, "will never be funded."

I tweeted him about that video and he said mine was probably a slightly harder attempt. Also some of the greatest fun I ever had making a video.

I'd love to know more about how you got that ramp into that position..

I usually think through my designs carefully and avoid stupidity where possible. When I play KSP with my 5 year old neice, it's another matter:

"Put another Mammoth on.

...and one there.

...and there."

By the time I'm done there'll be dozens of the things and it reaches Kerbin escape velocity before you know it.

And the circle is complete. The same phrase that was coined when the invention of fire launched Kerbals to the top of the Kerbin food chain, is now used after the invention of highly directed fire launches them into space...

Oh yes. I remember using Whack-A-Kerbal to unnecessarily destroy a perfectly good space station (in a quickly reverted special-purpose quicksave, of course) just to get the crew's horrified reaction shots in response to something happening down on the surface.

This sounds familiar.

At least then, you can build up an archive of reaction images. It's trickier when they need to be walking around, and you need to be careful that you don't destroy something that's not supposed to be  being destroyed in the shot. I like to set up SRBs to collide with something nearby.

Oh god, I remember showing KSP to somebody, I think he was 7.

We built a rocket powered by 4 twin boars and made it to duna in a single stage. Landing? That's a different story.
