Your KSP Story

My future son-in-law showed it to me.  He and my daughter know I'm a science and astronomy geek, and one day last year he shows me this game on his laptop... and he's landing a rocket on a planet!!!

I was floored, and bought the demo later that day.  Two days later, after many failed attempts to land on the Mun, I broke down and bought the full version.

This one starts back in the summer of 2013...

Before I was playing KSP, I was playing Minecraft exclusively.
Then I saw some youtube Minecrafters play it back in 0.21, specifically Zisteau and kurtjmac. Later on I started watching Scott Manley's Interstellar Quest series. I became very interested and loved the crazy things you could do and build in it.

Then I played the demo and fell in love.

A few months later with a $20 Steam card from Christmas redeemed, I bought the game.

I've been playing since 0.23, joined the forums in April of 2014, and I don't see any plans to stop playing anytime soon.

I was stressing over my med school finals so decided I'd wipe the dust off my old gaming computer. Booted up steam looked at EVE online and decided I didn't have enough time, then in the recommened at bottom was A weird green guy... Initally played about half an hour, loved it, so played a bit every night. In my final holiday before work I managed to get to all the plannets and now its something to look forward to after a busy shift!

I'd heard about KSP several times before I finally got it because the people I'd heard about it from made it sound like one of those Tycoon or Sim City type games and that wasn't what I wanted.  It sounded like I push some buttons and little green men run off and do stuff and I get a report.

The seed of curiosity was there though.  Sometime later I tried the demo.  It was nothing like what I thought and I had no idea what I was doing.

I went ahead and bought the game (0.23) because I wanted to support it and see what it became.  Best entertainment investment ever.

I think found the game wandering through TVTropes, I can't really remember. Picked it up just before heading south a couple of years ago. On the way back north stopped off at the KSC for a couple of days, fun times, the missus said it was the funniest thing watching me squee the whole time.

But yeah the 25 us$ I spent on it has been well paid.

I had heard about KSP back when it was in the really early versions and was interested but didn't really have time for games and promptly forgot about it.  Last December I saw an article about it being on sale on steam and promptly bought it and was instantly hooked (along with both of my kids).

Well, me and some others were discussing EA one day, and, as usual, wondering why EA absolutely insists on destroying every  game franchise and developer they acquire. That baffling mystery wasn't solved this time either - why don't EA's shareholders want to earn money? Why not? Anyway, suddenly one guy said - very tentatively, whispering, almost looking over his shoulder - "errm, uh, have you seen this game, Kerbal Space Program?", furtively, ashamed, like he was mentioning some German porn video where some Domina gives it to some poor bound and gagged guy with a two-feet strap-on. "- I'm totally hooked! G'dam I'm having an experience!"

Well, we didn't say much and didn't seem to think much either, and he, having said his piece, fell silent.

Nevertheless, I saw it on Steam some time later and though what the h*, and bought it.
So I started a sandbox game and had in my head to build some superior and very fancy rocket-ship... Brrrreep! I got nowhere. of course. Confused and realizing this was maybe complex stuff, I left it for later.

Almost a year later I had nothing better to do than having a look at it again. This time, I started a 'Science Sandbox' game, and found myself staring at only a pod and a booster rocket. Okay, I thought, I'll put them together - better put in that parachute as well - and launch it. So this rocket and Jebediah blasts off into the sky. The rocket burns out, but continues climbing for a good while before falling. I pop the chute. The rocket lands and a message comes up that I've earned 500 science points.

- That's when I get it!  - I'm Robert Goddard! - I'm Werner von Braun!  I'll do it from the ground up, from scratch. Every step of the way. Going farther and farther!

My story is completely random- I'm not too much of a gamer these days (basically I've played Kingdom Rush/Frontiers for the past year pre-KSP) so I generally don't seek out games. I was on Reddit one night, checking out the front page for interesting stories, and came across someone's TIFU post. In the middle of it he mentions that he is playing KSP, and when he "got his craft safely into orbit" went off IRL do do his thing. That one line really intrigued me, this idea of a game where someone could put something into orbit and simply walk away, so I looked it up, got the demo then the full version within a day or two.

Well starting i saw robbaz play it, also another youtuber before him i don't remember, it looked like a very interesting game, but kind of complicated, so i leaved it be for the time being. Then later (half year or so) i saw it in a watchmojo video about games with high difficulty curves i saw it along dark souls, so i was interesed to see it, i downloaded it and pretty much play a lot the last months of 2015. i stopped for a bit, but now i've buyed it so i could play without having to worry for updates.

A YouTuber/Twitch streamer I'm a big fan of played it several years ago, and me, being obsessed with space, found HarvesteR's idea of making a game out of orbital mechanics and rocket science genius! Only last year (well, December 2014...) did I get around to actually playing it myself. Best £30 I ever spent!

Wow a lot of Scott! I too saw Scott's videos of KSP and got inspired. OBVIOUSLY I like trains, so when I saw that "Re-useable Space program" episode with the train I jumped off a cliff in love. Like, trains on the Moon?!?!?!?!?!?!??! I saw his other vids w/ rockets and I was like: FLYING TRAINS. I am fascinated w/ complication. I got the demo and I wasn't that happy w/ it, but was still hyper excited. I then got it for Christmas (Yes I'm that young) and I just blew up. So much stuff! ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES! I used to be quite a silly one but with KSP I'm "like way mature" for my age, which makes me suffer at school. :( I really wanted to get to the moon, but didn't have any ideas. I researched the Saturn V then jumped out of a airliner in love for Spacetravel and rockets. Now I have my GET EVERYTHING RIGHT thing I have, which in turn made me spend two years developing an accurate Saturn V for KSP. I also, OBVIOUSLY made trains. And that was fun. With a combination of WW2 blood (Grandpa) and KSP's plane parts I became ADDICTED to planes, almost as much as planes, which boosted research of planes and WW2 which boosted research of tanks!!!!! ( I play War Thunder). And that was the basic foundation of my KSPing. Without it I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be like I am.

DANGIT! See? Overcomplication at its finest!

Yeah, Scott's awesome. I didn't actually find him until after I started playing, but he helped me get into orbit and get to the Mun.

Is it bad that, since I've never seen you before, I originally thought you were Overland on another account?

...ARE you Overland on another account?

I played Orbiter 2010 for a while but I wanted something that was easier to understand and generally more fun to mess around in. I saw videos of Scott Manley playing with the CSS mod way back in the day. I decided to try it out and now here I am about 2 years later.

A couple of guys at work talked about it a bit and my (adult) kids mentioned it and said I'd like it. I resisted knowing I'd probably get hooked and didn't need any more temptation to 'waste my life away'.  After a while I gave in to temptation and tried the v18.3 demo,  got hooked, bought  the full version and have happily 'wasted my life away' since.

Same here, often accompanied by hilarious fails and random explosions that leaves me both totally confused and giggling at the time :)

There have been a lot of kerbalnauts on fark. Screenshots often show up threads, Just seeing them I knew i was a game for me!  Then Steam put it on sale and gave me a popunder just as I was getting board w/ Portall2 That was around 0.17

I started by playing SimpleRockets for iOS. It was pretty easy to go interplanetary and rendezvous with other craft, but the @D graphics made it really hard to manoeuvre and build good ships, so when it recommended KSP and I saw that it was 3D, I got it within the week.

It was mid to late 2013, and there was this small KSP film on a YouTube channel I was watching. Looked interesting, and I looked into the game. Not sure why I didn't get it earlier, but I officially bought KSP at the beginning of 2014.

After a few months, I got horrifically burnt out, and I was starting to think I was just losing interest altogether. I checked on KSP every few months, but that was it. 2 years later (now) and I am starting to play again.

That's good. It's never fun when you get bored with something like KSP. It kinda happened to me, I started playing other games. But I gravitated back to KSP each time (Sorry XCOM, I can really only focus on one game at a time). Good to hear you're coming back.

I discovered KSP sonwhere in late 2014 and played the demo for about two weeks. Then I went for the full version which must have been 0.25 I think. Keep playing it almost every day, which is unique since I never played a singe game for such a long time.
