I'm increasingly starting to hate KerbalStuff.

Moved to the Lounge as KerbalStuff is a 3rd party site unaffiliated with Squad.

"The Lounge

Off-duty chatter on any topic except KSP"

so, KerbalStuff didn't even have anything to do with KSP in your eyes? way to devaluate someones hard work...

Funny thing about protecting a trademark, you have to show a history of pursuing it. If you have a a history of ignoring encroachment on the trademark then courts will not take claims seriously.

End users, by and large, don't give a toss about the technical stuff behind these legalities. Actions speak louder than words.

Quoted for truth. The law basically forces big companies to be *expletives* towards their fans.

Indeed they do. The notable action here was taking down KerbalStuff without warning and without attempting (AFAIK) to find someone to take it over.

Two wrongs don't really make a right here. So, diverting the wrong to a different target doesn't really make the notable marketing company less wrong.

While it's always a terrible shame to see fan sites close down for any reason, one must remember that SirCmpwn felt he had to make this decision.

Any site, especially a site that draws many visits and has to host user submitted content, will cost money to run.

As Sircmpwn says, he was largely rewarded for his efforts with complaints from users of his site, rather than praise he deserved.

I also used KerbalStuff when I needed a mod, and I donated to support modders from time to time, but I regret that I never found the time to tell SirCmpwn that I appreciated his efforts.

But I understand how much work goes into something like this, and on the occasions when the site was slow or unavailable I knew that all I had to do was wait for Sircmpwn to fix it when he had time.

Thank you for your efforts over the years SirCmpwn, and good luck to you for the future.

But it can be protected by granting a license to use it, without being too overbearing

Which is exactly what happened, the legal issues alluded to happened shortly after KS started. Let me make this clear for those operating under this misconception:

Squad did not force SirCmpwn to take down KerbalStuff.

No one is saying that. But, I wonder how much of a threat to intellectual property a site that generated no revenue and was maintained out of a single individual's pockets represent in practice, especially considering the whole free marketing aspect of it, considering how it was preferred over the official solution.

No they didn't.  In his words " In fact, for the most part, I just hear complaints "

SirCmpwn did a wonderful job on Kerbalstuff.  I suspect it was costing him a significant amount of money to maintain.  Rather than people being thankful and expressing their appreciation (doesn't have to be mone), it was a thankless job.  I've been in the same boat a number of years ago, and as a result, while I maintain that site since the cost is absorbed inside other expenses, it's not getting any attention from me.

Worth pointing out here that SirCmpwn moved KerbalStuff away from the free, enterprise grade hosting offered that a long-time modder was providing when KS started.

It's funny to see how the rope always breaks at the wrong end...or should I say, the weak end.

But on a second note, I think it would be better for you to consider why that action was taken instead of making broad assertions like that.

Well, since @SirCmpwn said it was a thankless job and he heard nothing but complaints...What you know? A threaten to pursue legal action could be interpreted as a complaint too.

Also, I had offered to setup a backup site for him, at my own expense, last summer, which he had declined to accept.

One of the reoccurring issues on each of these "what happened to Kerbal Stuff" threads is how bad Curse is. Yes, I too, will agree that Curse is bad. This is my biggest complaint about KSP is Curse; I can handle the crashes, the lag time, but trying to use Curse to keep mods updated is like trying to drink a milkshake from a thimble.

I'm not trying to be rude or cause any controversy, but there has to be something better than Curse that Squad can use. Heck, at this point, I would even be willing to pay a subscription fee of up to $5.00 per mod, if it means that as the mod is updated it will automatically update my files...

Let's see $5/mod, 200 mods installed, golly gee, $1000 to play a $40 game.

Better would be a subscription to a site, of say $5 or so per month

SirCmpwn has made the source available on Github, and the (hopefully most up to date) mods available to download, perhaps if someone else was willing to take this up?

Never thought of that. I have 80 mods, so that would be a whopping $400 to play a $12.99 game (<--- bought it on STEAM back when it was .22  and on sale!)

I agree, a flat per month subscription fee...

Really? And if you want to install 20 mods? Or maybe you want to install 20 but only 13 of them will work together? Are you made of money?

Paid-for mods is a whoooole other kettle of fish.

**edit**

hehehe, ninja'd  so many times....
