Fly to Eeloo and back with two fuel tanks, no refueling!

You wanna see if you can do it first before you start making these challenges?

Hi NotaKlutz, and welcome aboard!

Please see our Challenge Submission Guidelines to help flesh out your challenge, as written it's pretty non-specific.

What a nice challenge, I suggest adding a score board by mass or cost or something. Also you can expect my entry very soon.

You just love doing Eeloo related challenges don't you?:D

Seems doable, but the rules require some clarification. Is it enough to simply pass through the SOI of Eeloo, or do you have to be in orbit? If so how low an orbit? Or do we have to land as well?

I might be having an addiction to a certain ball of ice just sayin'..... :D I tried it today but Jool and Eeloo were both in the wrong spot... Mission failed we'll get em' next time.

I'm always down for an Eeloo mission.

Done.

One S3-14400 LFO tank and One Mk3 Liquid Fuel Fuselage.

145t on pad, 141169 funds if that somehow matters for scoring.

Made LKO with 8999 dV left.   Also landed on Pol just for fun.

I used a Rhino first stage with some disposable Thuds to get off the pad, dropped the Thuds at around 10K when TWR got excessive, then Rhino got me out of the atmosphere.  5 LVNs were used to circularize, then all but one were discarded.  This left me with nearly 9K dV, enough to easily go to Eeloo, land, then go visit Jool and land on Pol as well.

I suggest a scoring system that rewards a lower mass Eeloo mission, and maybe a bonus for visiting other moons/planets.  With some tweaking, someone could maybe have hit Mun/Minmus, Dres, even Duna isn't out of the question if I added a few drogues for landing.  Actually I would love to see someone pull this off with ions, or an ISRU submission would be really cool.

I promise I did not copy you but our missions look almost identical.

I'm working on a mission and it looks similar too.

I thought of using ions but one tank isn't enough. So that meant a capsule on top of a big LF tank and one nuke plus a single stage to get it into LKO

Might as well finish it now though...

It seems Jetski set a president. Still, what's the criteria for for the score? Launch mass? Cost? Mission time? Anyway, here's my entry. Went somewhat overboard with the editing, and actually spent more time doing that than actually flying the mission.

@Foxster True, you might be able to do this with one fuel tank. If you use the the Mk. 3 liquid fuel tank and Jet engines and Nukes you could likely get it into orbit.

I've been working on a SSTO with a single giant LF tank, and a smaller lander with a refillable LF can. I wanted to see what planets I could hit. Been dropping a bunch of whiplash engine and wings, then using nukes to try for orbit. Still can't get to LKO, but getting closer.

If you drop stuff, it no longer qualifies as an SSTO unless you mean something else entirely.

Ya ya of course. Let's call it a Horizontally Arranged Completely Kerbal Jet-propelled Orbital Booster instead.  So it would be safe to say that my HACK JOB hasn't made orbit yet. Pics to follow if I get a working version.

Or just call it a space plane?

After alot of procrastinating, I present my finished product:

@Jetski I promise I did not copy your vessel, when I designed it this challenge was still new and I didn't see your design until mine was finished. It seems we designed nearly identical craft by coincidence. Also good job on your entry. :D
