Squall - Light Trainer

CRAFT FILE(S):

https://goo.gl/mF9RR4

UPDATES:

30/08/16 - Extra reaction wheel added. Landing gear/engines moved back. Re-fueling port/fuel dump added. Max rudder deflection increased.

20/12/16 - Docking port moved to top of craft, landing gear re-positioned, re-balance.

11/1/17 - Visual Update.

Compact, speedy and extremely manoeuvrable, the Squall has something for both novices and pros alike. :)

Despite appearances the Squall is powered by 2 Juno engines and can hit Mach 1 at altitude. You'll get 20 minutes run time at sea level going up to over an hour at 9,000m+. Maximum operating altitude is 15,000m.

Thanks to the offset engines the Squall has perfect 50/50 weight distribution at all fuel loads.

The probe core can be deleted in the editor to make space for a pilot.

Enjoy! :D

Can I use this without a joystick? I only have a WASEQD keyboard, and arrows keys.

A joystick is of course recommended but you can still fly without, I'd keep SAS on at all times though.

Really nice build Cupcake! Sometimes looking at your craft I look at myself as trying to hard

I woudn't say there's a "right" way to play KSP, I love that everyone has they're own design style.

Well said mate. There are so many different ways to build all with their own set of difficulties and restrictions.

Super cute looking aircraft BTW. Are we going to see a video starring it soon? Pweeze?

I'm afraid I'll be away from home for the next three weeks, but as soon as I get back I'll try and get a video up. :)

Squall 2.0 - Now with 27.6% more lunacy...

Heh all,

I've given the Squall a wee tune up and it's now flying better then ever. Here's a rundown of the changes:

While not exactly lacking maneuverability the addition of a second, nose mounted reaction wheel has made the craft even more agile and given it enough torque to handle water landings/takeoffs. To compensate for the added mass at the front the landing gear has been moved back, greatly reducing the chance of tail strikes.

A newly added refueling port at the base of the craft allows you to keep the tanks topped up. A basic fuel dump (pictured here) comes as standard.

Did you clip the two Junos together? Or am I being a derp?

Not exactly, what looks like the engine(s) is actually an air intake. The real engines are mounted just behind the cockpit (notice the bulges). This arrangement means they're close to the center of mass and don't blow hot air onto the control surfaces. Hope this makes sense! :P

Sorry for the response a couple months later, but if you've not tried Pilot Assistant, I highly recommend it. There's also mouse aim flight for some interesting real-time fine control via mouse.

It's a pretty cool set of autopilots -- you can not only hold course, etc. but also certain speeds, turn, or climb rates as well.

Well, I was able to fly a Storm right the way round Kerbin...

...and it's all thanks to that wonderful mod! Cheers for bringing it to my attention it's instantly become one of my favorites.
