Easiest Way to Record a KSP Video

Probus

OBS is legit and, if you're on Linux, it behooves you to learn Blender as a video editor; it works surprisingly well in that capacity but there is a bit of a learning curve. Both are free.

I am on Linux as well, and I agree with @Martian Emigrant. I recommend RecordMyDesktop if you want to make some simple videos to share on the forum. It really just does what it says on the box, and you can "learn" it in 1 minute.

For video editing, I use Kdenlive. It is a relatively simple program, which I thought had a reasonable learning curve before you can produce your first edited video (putting fragments together, adding some text, and adding some music).

Kdenlive.

Have to remember that.

I use none at this time.

I personally prefer OBS, and use it exclusively after years of using FRAPS, which I switched to after years of using Bandicam - which for me had lots of trouble chewing on Kerbal Space Program.

There's a learning curve. You have to figure out what a "source" and a "scene" is and how one contains the other and why, but once you got that down it's as simple as hitting your hotkey and playing.

For editing, I use VideoPad. It's simple to use - at least relative to the "professional" and/or free options - and surprisingly powerful for $70. When I went to the page to check the price, I see also that it's currently on sale for $50. I actually own the more expensive version because I wanted more than two audio tracks, but I almost never use more than 2 and have never used an external plugin.

I use RecordMyDesktop on Linux, but it was an absolute pain getting sound to record. I had to create an .asoundrc with a loopback device.

I notice it snarfs temp-space at about 0.1GB/sec, when I'm recording at 15 frames/sec at 1920x1200, so I have to set the working dir somewhere other than /tmp because I only have 16GB there. After it encodes the video, all that goes away though. I tried "--on-the-fly-encoding" but that destroyed the audio sync.

Anyway, I use avidemux for video editing. I learned it when I started making my own DVDs.

I'm using Bandicam and it's okay - very easy, and does the job adequately. FRAPS free version has a ridiculous limit of 30 seconds - Bandicam allows for five minutes in one go. But I might give OBS a go.

And trying to swim across Pacific might get you a little tad wet.

I'm currently learning Blender. I'm quite proficient in Sketchup, and the transition was... murderous. In Sketchup almost everything is easy, few things are somewhat difficult, not overly so. In Blender NOTHING is easy, simple or straightforward. Except for adding a monkey. Adding a monkey is easy.

I wouldn't dare use Blender for 3D stuff, I'm an old Lightwave guy and not being able to place a single vertex wherever I want without some stupid hack makes Blender bad for me. Plus, the controls are all wrong. But you don't need any of that for video editing and the workflow is fairly easy to pick up.

E: It's also probably one of the best packages for video editing on Linux that isn't alphaware, so there's that.

Win10 has its own recorder now, although I think it is tied to the XBox app/utility/dashboard/whatchamacallit. That's what i've been using lately, just push win+alt-R. Editing with Windows Live MovieMaker. But I'll have to try Kdenlive, no, wait, that was Linux....

From the Kdenlive site: "As a result of Google’s Summer of Code 2016, experimental Windows build should hopefully be available before the end of 2016."
Yes, the Win 10 recorder is an xbox abomination, you'll find the nVidia utility much more useful if you have a compatible card.  That's what I use most of the time, otherwise OBS.  For editing I have a number of packages; DaVinci Resolve, OpenShot, Shotcut and - naturally - Audacity for audio.
