Ah, this is great.

I always did wonder what happened to the ridges and plateaus I remembered navigating in the DEMV mods (someone needs to resurrect those, BTW).

One question: if this changes the height map, how does this handle Easter Egg positioning?  Quite a few were buried by the 0.21 changes and have since been restored by the 1.2 release.

Does this mod reposition them to their original pre-1.2 state?

AFAIK, the easter eggs should be good.

oh! I didn't know this mod existed! I'm so happy to see this! Finally, I can go back to Duna, I've hardly been back there since it got flattened back in [insert whichever version changed it]. Really pleased to see this mod exists, can't wait to get home and give it a try. Does this play nice with SVE?

I haven't tried it with SVE but if it adds dust storms or clouds they will probably be at the wrong altitude.

How about rescale mods like Sigma Dimensions? I'm playing a 2.5x stock system, could I drop this in and have my Duna replaced by a 2.5x version of this Duna?

It should work with SD just fine.

Stock Visual Terrain and Stock Visual Enhancements Test Results

SVT will override Duna Restoration Project, unless you delete or rename Duna.cfg from the SVT folder first. If you do this, then OldDuna.cfg will populate Duna as intended by this add-on.

You're not using any of the SVT textures when doing this, though; perhaps with some experimentation one could insert SVT textures into OldDuna.cfg. Or maybe do the reverse and apply the terrain and biome maps from here to the SVT config for Duna. OK that didn't work; just use the SVT textures in OldDuna.cfg

I tried adding AFTER[SVT] to OldDuna.cfg, but that didn't seem to take. I could try using Module Manager's add-or-edit operator '%' for that, maybe. Forget that too.

Stock Visual Enhancements, though, works without modification. The dust storms will just miss anything in the really low lying maria and canyons, but they're quite visible from down there.

The current biome map has a problem with "Ice Caps" covering a large equatorial section, though. There's no biome defined that uses the light cyan colour that surrounds the Canyon biome. Or it's too close a match to the biome map colour used for the real Ice Caps. I submitted that as an issue to the repository.

If you are currently maintaining the CKAN upload for this mod, please update the version to 1.3.99 or something since it is 1.3.X here.

Also, stupid question, why does this require Kopernicus? Does doing anything at all to planets besides texturing require Kopernicus?

Sorry about the long delay, didn't realize the latest post was from mid-December.

Kopernicus is the most widely supported planet editor plugin for KSP because of how it works; it inserts the modified planetary system before KSP builds it, making it a lot easier for the game code to maintain it. Anything that modifies, adds or replaces celestial bodies in KSP uses it these days, and that includes this texture and bump map replacement for Duna.

I suppose one could try patching the Duna files directly since the system itself doesn't change, but I think that would involve modifying KSP directly or using some other plugin. Much easier to use an established celestial editor.

Will there be 1.4 compatibility?

I'm helping out with Alien Space Programs that includes a version of Restored Duna. I'm waiting on Kopernicus 1.4.3-2 to get released that should include an important bug fix related to cbNameLater world names, but I don't anticipate much difficulty adapting the original Restored Duna once that bug fix is out.

Cool! I'm hyped for the next release, your version of Duna is so much better than the stock one.

Just on a cursory inspection, GregroxMun's repository is complete and seems to work on Kopernicus 1.4.3-2. The Restored Duna biome map still has an area surrounding the Canyon biome that is confused with the Ice Caps, so I'd want to correct that. It also needs localization to fix science reports and KerbNet displays.

There's also a Restored Eve; not sure why, aside from putting that 11 km plateau back on its surface. Restored Eve uses the stock biome map so the biomes don't match the terrain. It too will need localization.

I can work on both of these and do a pre-release, but you can run them as they are now.

Pre-release for Kopernicus 1.4.3-2 Available

I just finished a fork and pre-release for KSP 1.4.3 and Kopernicus 1.4.3-2. For the most part, the originals worked, and I just added some polish. I submitted a pull request a moment ago as well.

 Thank you! So love this mod

Still works in KSP 1.61 and Kopernicus 1.6.1-1

Well since he commented on a previous post concerning the Duna-Restoration-Project 2.1pre fork for 1.4, I assume he is talking about that version.

CKAN still links to the 2.0 version for 1.3.1.

I too would be interested in having @wile1411 confirm which he is using to be sure.

I'm kinda interested in modifying the biome map PNG file so it shows the crater biome in some of the little craters. However, there seems to still be some lingering issues with how this appear in the game with the current mods status. The Highlands Biome (Cyan color) seems to have an Icecap biome ring around it. This is already mentioned by @Gordon Fecyk in a previous post, and while he says the canyons is the problem biome, I think it's actually the Highlands that's the problem. The Canyon is 'inside' the Highlands biome and it has the ring around anything in or outside it's border.

The old KSP problem of thin biomes strips being between biome boundries I think should be solvable. I might spend some time searching in the Kopernicus forums to see if there is something that can be done. I wonder if there is any requirement to change to a .dds biome file? Not sure if Gordon is a bit busy, but in case he reads this - I'd like to offer to try a few things to see if I can help find solutions. I'm learning as I go here, but I'll take any tidbits of knowledge and happily take directions to get any fiddly prep work done that you might need.

The Normal , Color & Height maps are all 4096x2048px, but the Biome Map is 1024x512px. Is there any possibilty to get a slightly finer resolution to the biome file to allow painting of smaller craters.
Below is what it looks like when I resize the biome map in Paint.net to the same size as the other image file and fiddle with the transparency so we can see all the layers. This is shown side-by-side with the ScanSat mod interface in game and is currently zoomed into the weird canyon thingy.

Red lines show the same features in paint vs the ScanSat biome map.
Blue lines show the different biomes colors and a sample of where they are located. The dark teal biome (craters) can't be seen, but it is there between the dark red bar and the icecaps ring.

Would it be possible to utilize the current 1.61 Duna biome list, but painted over appropriate areas of the restored map?
This would allow using stock science definitions and not having to rewrite / include old science def cfgs.

Or is the point of this restoration to only use the old stock biomes like 'Ice Caps' & 'Dark Spots'?  As an example/suggestion, there are quite a few polar craters (north and south) that span along the ice cap line like they do in stock. These would be good candidates to paint and assign the 'Polar Craters' biome.

Comparison of Stock vs Duna Restored biome list.

Poles Ice Caps
Polar Highlands Highlands
Polar Craters Dune Plains
Highlands Lowlands
Midlands Craters
Lowlands Maria
Craters Maria Basins
Midland Sea Dark Spots
Northeast Basin Canyon
Southern Basin
Northern Shelf
Midland Canyon
Eastern Canyon
Western Canyon

Sometime back someone did some corrections to Eve and Tylo Biomes.

Maybe this thread will have some helpful info.

Edit: I think I miss read what you were asking. But the thread may still have useful info.  Personally I think trying to match the 1.6.1 biomes would be better. I would think the Restoration's focus would have been to matching Duna's appearance as opposed to original biome list.

If I did work on modified Duna biome map, would @Gordon Fecyk be ok I posted questions on the WIP map on this thread?

That's one of the purposes of these threads of course. Though I'm no biome map expert; that's Greg's map. You might want to review OhioBob's experience with the web palette and GIMP to deal with the borders; I know you've been following that conversation.

Old Duna existed in a time when biomes on other planets didn't exist. If you're trying to increase the number of biomes to match Stock Duna, I suppose you could have more than one Maria / Mara and more than one Canyon like Minmus has more than one Flats.

Oh, I forgot to say: "Highlands" wasn't the original name of the cyan biome; it didn't have an entry in Biomes{} before localization. I just figured given the altitudes the name made sense.
