Soviet [Korolev's style] stock parts

Recommended Posts

There will be any Soviet/Russian parts in a stock version of the game? I noticed that nearly all parts in KSP are from American space program (even Stayputnik which is similar to Vanguard probe) and I want to ask you why? I don't want to offend anyone but it seems that one of the major sides of Space Race is ommitted completly. Why we cand recreate in a stock game first missions in space because there isn't Vostok/Voskhod capsules but at the same time there is Mercury-styled capsule? Or strap-on boosters of R-7 Semyorka which are used until this day (longer than any NASA rocket probably)? You can say that this is in users' mods but every new version can make these mods obsolete and there aren't any guarantees that they would be continued.

Kerbal parts look American, but that's the only similarity to the real things. There's no functional relevance; like multi-nozzle engines won't be more reliable in KSP since all equipment has a 0% failure rate anyway (failures are due to the player, not parts). So I ask, what would Soviet/Russian parts actually do aside from look different?

Soyuz boosters would be very limited by their particular shape (with all the current rocket tanks being tubes we can fit whatever we want together to design our own). If they were in pieces the parts wouldn't fit seamlessly with anything else in the game except maybe the base/engine bit, and if they were large self-contained liquid boosters like the Twin Boar then what would they offer over that extant part (aside from 1 off the partcount for the nosecone not required)? I think any Soviet styling on parts should be included for the rocket part rework SQUAD may or may not still be working on, but I can't see actual new parts offering anything more unique than their appearance.

I dare say it's not really the point of stock KSP to emulate replica missions and that anything outside the scope of the actual in-universe Kerbal space program belongs under the purview of mods.

...this is the one and only thing i truely miss in KSP, a true and honorable mention (or simple Kerbal reference:D) of Korolevs work, and the rest of the R-7 design, i mean the slanted tanksection of the centerstage.
I really think it is not a small issue to hide these engineering marbles from the younger public, but as allways, its not our game, its @SQUADs child.

It is how it is.

I end up using R7 stuff a lot in SSTU, and partially because it fills a size gap between the 1.25, and 2.5m parts.

In the stock game, as @String Witch said, there would need to be a reason, other than just looks. A 2 kerbal reentry pod in the soviet bell shape would certainly be possible. Add a round/elliptical orbital module, and you've got soyuz. My fear is that it's not novel enough. The lack of failure modes is also an issue (where different paradigms might be interesting to explore).

The problem I see is that US spacecraft shapes are a lot more fitting when it comes to this game, which is basically Space Lego. It's a lot easier to run around with nothing but cones and cylinders, in terms of building and in terms of defining collider models.

Stock parts look very Proton'ish, though.

Spoiler

Captura-de-pantalla-2016-02-21-a-las-23.

And enough Kosmos'ish.

Also you can fly to the Moon with LK-1 or LK-700 or else.

So, OP would be more precise: not "Soviet", but "Korolev's" style. Chelomei, Yangel and others use standard simple shapes.

Well, it is true, the rather organic Soyuz shape is very special, it would be a derailing of the Kerbal style of spacesim...
At least there is the Mir reference and a trusty Probecore. And the RD engines. And russian spelling Kerbals, some of mine speak krussian to me exclusively.:D (There are others which i rarely understand, one is Khindi, the others Knippon and Khinese...)
