Dear devs - can we please have Glenn Kerman added to the game?

Recommended Posts

As in the title. With recent death of the last of "Mercury 7" astronauts John Glenn, i feel this game should honor that brave man, his teammates and entire "Mercury" program - the first stepping stone for Moon exploration. Hard-coding "Glenn" into Kerbal name pool in one of future updates would be a nice and respectful gesture to commemorate fifth man in space, first American to orbit the Earth and the oldest man to ever fly to space. What say you? :)

Hey all.

I wasn't there when the devs chose Jeb, Bill, Bob and Val.

My guess is that they were just "Joke names". The game had no "History" and a vague future.

So what is my point? I am not sure I have a point.

And no insult meant.

Except that if you start making new veterans anytime an astronaut dies then there will be a lot more.

They (The real stuff) are getting older. Everyday. Some of them will never grow old.

Some of them are Russian. Both getting older and not.

It's a big can of worms. You can't please everybody.....All the time.

We had this talk when Leonard Nimoy died. AFAIK it was decided it would be disrespectful to do that.

Yeah, I think for similar reasons Neil Kerman is no longer in the game.

How is it disrespectful (just wondering, idc if they're in the game or not)?

The idea for KSP was conceived when the original creator and his friends strapped tinfoil figures to fireworks rockets and chronicled their exploits when they were kids. Jebediah, Bob, and Bill came from that.

Valentina Kerman, on the other hand, is a direct reference to Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova, the first woman to fly to space.

The first thing, as previously said, you would be able to 'kill' (it's a game though) someone with a name who's already dead.

The second thing to consider is the fact that there are relatives who might think it's a really bad and dark joke. Would I care if someone named anything after me after I had passed away? No, I wouldn't. But that's because of my beliefs. We need to consider and respect other people who don't share the same beliefs as I or perhaps even you do.

The third argument about why 'easter eggs' like this shouldn't be in the game is dev time and the amount of them needed to 'pay' respects to each individual that ever lived and did something to either promote spaceflight or actually took part in it.

You don't have to implement anything into the game to pay respects to any of those people. KSP is not the most important thing that's ever existed. Simply think about them, remember and try to be like them if you think it's worth it.

Thank you.

Where the name Valentina came from is kind of an obvious. They wanted to add a "Girl" and "Valentina" says girl AND says "Astronaut" (I know Cosmonaut). No one can say "Valentina isn't an astronaut. That made her more than a "Token" girl. Her name was well chosen and in this case warranted IMO. Well chosen.

I was thinking of a Easter Egg memorial like the one that Neil Armstrong was given on the Mun, but make it so all the Mercury Astronauts name was on it with a Mercury Capsule on top.

If one was fair to all our fallen Astronauts and Cosmonauts worldwide, split it up into 3 or 4 monolith-like memorials.

Maybe it could be on Moho since it's a Mercury analogue?

I agree and it should be a Mercury Program memorial, and not one just to Glenn. It's the hard efforts of Alan Sheperd, Gus Grissom, Walter Schirra, Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, and although he didn't get his chance then, Donald Deke Slayton.
